@BATENKILL I played my Carter through an OLD ShoBud volume pedal, then straight into a Peavey Nashville 112. No effects except internal spring reverb. Thanks for the compliment
I'm shure Floyd Tillman is looking down thanking every one involved in the making of this video .. This is the most beautiful cover of this song I've ever heard ... I love the smug looks each player gives every now and then as they too know they couldn't of nailed it ANY better ...
I once got up and sang a couple of tunes at Legends corner in Nashville and John Hughey was sitting in for a couple of songs. I didn't know who he was until I got back to Montana. Wow, lucky me.
What is so sad is steel guitar is probably the shortest lived instrument ever. It's only been around like 50 years and all the masters are dead or about to die. Few are picking up the torch to carry it on. So sad....
I used to have one, but it seemed so difficult at the time, I stuck with guitar. But I have to admit there is truly something magical with pedal steel, I totally regret selling it now.
@SonicArchives yeah you are correct it is a very tricky instrument you have so much to learn to get it to sound like a song but thats what is so much fun its like a woman the more you play the smoother it gets Ha Ha
Bill...Beautiful tone and fantastic playing....This video is among my classic pedal steel videos..thanks so much much for posting this gem. I've purchased the Time Jumpers DVD, and it's just a pleasure to watch John Hughey play....never got to see him live, or meet him...but the man was a humble and gracious human being. Once again Bill thanks for this gem! I look forward to all your new postings
Bill your one of the greatest steel players ever. Your the reason I ordered a carter starter steel. Keep it up I love your steel pickin. If you have any tips I would love it. thanks your #1 fan Buster Gladman
Isn't that also John Hughey playing behind Shelby Lynne. It is worth listening to. the steel player can be seen at 1.50. Please type in singer, song title but not the last word ( me ).
Bill: I had heard you play other tunes but none of them have caught my ear as this song.. Don't get me wrong, John is excellent, as he always was, but my ear did summersalts, when you cut back in , to do your rendition.A great job by two grand steel guitarists..Bernie
Thank you so much for the kind words Bernie. I will never be in the same league as John. However, I will treasure this night for the rest of my life. I think it was better than being on the Opry (which I never was)
Bill, I know I'm probably overdoing it here, but I'm in one of those "emotional" moods, and to me that's what you and John are all about. You both have it covered when it comes to the heart wrenching stuff. I'm a steel player, and to me this is mainly one of pedal steels formost qualities, and you guys both do it great justice. Marc.
Bill, thanks for the response, and good to know you're still with us "older guys". Boy, I hate talking like that, but, you know what I mean. I was so thrilled to hear John Hughy, just before he died in Dallas. He played on, what ended up being to me, (at least), kind of a fairwell "set" for Hall Rugg. Hal had John and some other great players up there all at once, and man what a set. To me it was kind of God's way of honering John Hughy and Hal Rug. Marc.
I just wanted to add to my comment on Bill's fabulous playing. I already know John Hughy is one of the worlds greatest steel players on the "pretty stuff", as I call it, but Bill your kicking ass on this, and just the fact that your on the same stage as John, says something for you. Marc Trainor. God bless John Hughy, and we'll all miss him greatly!!!
Bill, let me get serious here right now!!!! You're fortey is your slow pretty stuff, and I mean to me you sound as good as John on it. From me that's the extreme compliment, because not too many people in this world can play the "pretty stuff" as good as John Hughy could. My hat's off to both of you. Marc Trainor.
Rest in peace John, your music remains as your legacy. This is so sweet. I was just a second ago listening to Buddy play the same tune. Thanks to all to make this available.
John Hughey passed away last night. Very suddenly and very sad to hear the news. Another gentleman steel player, played with the best. We enjoyed you always and will miss you always.
Thank you for the compliments. I have a couple of more with us together and will try to post soon. Sadly, we lost John last night, 11/18/07. I along with entire music community will surely miss him. He was a great man.
Hey bob. Yep my Carter. Lawrence XR16 pickups into Goodrich LDR volume pedal into one NV112 amp. That's it and me. Stop by the sound booth in St Louis. Bill
This brings back memories when my buddy Bob Browning used to smuggle me back stage during the Steel Guitar Conventions in Watertown, TN...my favorite instrument of all time.
Absolutely fabulous playing from both. John is an old friend; I listened to him night after night when I worked with Conway, and never once tired of his playing.
That is a great song, and this is a super job of it. There were some really awesome moments in there, from both players. (coming from a huge steel fan, but not an actual player)
Thank you, Steelpicker, for putting up all these great steel videos.
What kind of amp you running that Carter through? Sounds really good!
