There's a lot of pressure to remember your lines and be an angel, so I'm sure all actors feel the need to let loose. These clips prove that actors are just like us
I've often heard that Lou's ad-libs, if they were clean, would sometimes be included in the completed movie, e.g. the dice scene where he says,"starting Tuesday, I'm going out with GIRLS!" Obviously, if Abbott broke up laughing or because of another actor's flub the scene became irretrievable, they couldn't just "Pickup in 5-4-3-2-( )"; then these kinds of scenes ensued.
I am chuckling at all the people here that are shocked to hear swearing on these. Did you guys really expect the outtakes to be as clean as the final material? Just because they weren't allowed to use such language on film back then doesn't mean that a few swears weren't thrown around in real life. The English language hasn't changed THAT much since then. This is actually pretty tame compared to some of the things you hear on Comedy Central nowadays.
Warner Brothers used to take all of their out-takes (film on which mistakes were made) and would splice them together on one reel to show at studio Christmas parties. They even made a special one where an early Porky Pig hits his thumb with a hammer and lets out a four letter word. Lou Costello didn't become mean after his son drowned, but he did go through a period of depression.
funny, 40's humor. cussing and crotch humor. come to think of it, not much has changed. pulling the pocket watch out of his zipper was good. i just got the first one, they're supposed to be a band, "shortstop". great stuff, thanks for sharing.

We'd been hearing that Costello was a heck of a nasty swine who kept trying to put himself before Abbot in billing as well as salary. It appears he was also vulgar both in word and actions. Too bad for Abbot, who they say took it all in stride. BTW all you who keep going misty over "Jeff's Collie"... what did you do anyway, spend your childhood in front of a TV set? It just wasn't all that good! If you grew up before TV you remember Saturday movies- Roy Rogers & Hopalong Cassidy!
umm actually ...no...lou was the one who handled all the negotiations because abott said on many occasions that he trusted lou to take care of the team and lou always made sure neither was paid more than the other and that each made the most the could while making the same amount... neither ever said anything different...and till this day their children never said otherwise.
believe me they may have had their differences at times but never did one try and screw the other over.....as a matter of fact the only time there was a quarrel over money was when teh two were at odds with the studio.
Why don't you shut the fuck up! these guys were nicest men in the world so don't go bad mouthing them, motherfucker! sure Bud did have a bit of a drinking addictition, but they were nice men so shut your mouth you peice of shit!
If you did hear anything about Lou being "rude" it was probably after his son died. I've read on many sites that the reason he did become mean was because he had lost his son when he was just 2 years old.
Absolutely right! I guess I got so used to "Jeff's Collie", as the reruns were named. One of my favorite childhood shows, and a hundred times better than the Jon Provost show!
Type in Vic and Walt - Abbott and Costello - Who's On First? As well as Money Matters and The One Liners. To view our sets from Lou Costello's 100th Birthday Celebration held in his home town of Patterson NJ. Enjoy.
I'm not offended at all-then again, I got 12 yrs of internet under my belt and eight years working in a prison-I've heard it all. Lou was Lou. If you've never read his daugther's bio then instead of acting all tight assed maybe you should stop before the film gets any further. Maybe you should just leave the net all together because it can be vulgar is out there! Scary! To AMannar, I have this video at home-I love Lou C something wicked so I appreciate your efforts. Cheers, mate! :D
Let me ask you something then, why the bloody hell are you on YOUTUBE which frequently has vulgar stuff? Who told you to watch? What? You didn't think people cursed back then? What are you some kinda shut in? Gowan-get outta here ya weirdo!
the only person who became a little upset was the woman. People In the background were laughing, in the book i spoke about earlier his "blue humor" was actually appreciated constantly. Apparently he couldn't meet somebody without making them laugh and like i said earlier they made jokes the same way we do today, with language that will make people laugh, he usually cleaned up his act around women, but i guess because they were working together he needed some sort of bloopers lol
Its clear that Costello's blue humor wasn't appreciated then as it would have been today. They actually seemed upset with him using such language. While today he would have had them all in tears. He's use of foul language was actually more real and funny to people that didn't feel the need to act like it was beneath them. They are just words and when spoken by a comedian shouldn't be take too seriously.
Exactly right, the time period they lived in, which we seem to have a saintly opinion of, was not too much different than today. People cursed and spoke uncouthly sometimes just like today...you just couldn't do it in films lol, which is why we have that saintly opinion of the time, form those clean cut films, which are good all the same
I dont get the naive responses to this- Do you think veteran pros like A & C who struggled for years in vaudeville, etc, would talk like Sunday school teachers?? I woulda slapped Brenda Joyce after about the 3rd time she condescendingly tapped Lou on the mouth w/ her envelope or whatever it was for the profanity. He's obviously doing it to break up the crew.
don't feel that way cathytreks, i out this video up 2 show taht he was human . i would recommend you read the book "Lou's On First" by Chris Costello (his daughter) to get an idea of what he was really like, a family man with a herat of gold who had his downaults but always had his families best interests @ herat
in fact that book made me laugh and cry.. they were really a good act. i wish they would still be around today!!! todays acts will never compare to theirs. i loved both abbott and costello, but love costello more, he did have a heart of gold.
Exact same reaction to the book. Timeless act, 100 yrs from now tehy will still be selling thier DVD's...or nano chips or watever they're usng for videos 100 yrs from now.
I am sad to see that Costello was such a rude and crude man in real life, unlike the sweet dear character he "seemed" to be on completed film, now I wish I had never seen these outakes of reality, he is far less of a person then I once thought, in my opinion.
are you kidding he's the jack black of his time. ofcourse he was vulgar ALL comedians are vulgar! he's an ACTOR would you really want him to be the whimpy guy he was in all his movies? NO, he's just a dude. and i thought he was hilarious. don't tell me you've never said "bitch."

ya...i am sad that Lou used that kind of language. actually, in the movies, Lou is all "dopey" and Bud is all "Smart and sensible" but in real life, it was the other way around. After Lou's 2 yr old son died during the filming of "Hit the Ice" he became very rude and often mean. I feel sorry for him. He was truly a wonderful man. And Bud Abbott DID NOT get that much appreciation for his work which is a shame. He was a very talented man.
