I think the confusion here is different ideologies.
In Mein Kampf, Hitler said something along the lines of "There comes a point where expansion is necessary to the survival of a state." So perhaps according to their beliefs they were fighting for their own land. Or perhaps a parallel could be drawn to US troops in Vietnam or Afghanistan being equated to fighting for freedom at home in the US. A reasonable argument could be made for either side.
