  • props for the early years, but I think they def got better with age........

  • You can literally hear Geddy's wail beginning to falter here. To think of it, not even 5 years later, he can barely sing stuff from before Permanent Waves.

  • It would totally suck if there was no pro-shoot of the Permanent Waves tour. Have you heard the boot from the Ft. Worth, Tx. show? It destroys everything in its wake.

  • What's with the awful reverb on Geddy's vocals?

  • Ok, I love Rush, seen them three times, one of those times was at MSG, all three times on Time Machine, and i'm inly 12. And even I think this is not great. Ok yes, but not great.

  • @123Jus1 Dood, what grade are you in?

  • At the Aud - how cool bro!! Hemispheres tour?

  • @Brux2Golf Permanent Waves Tour

  • The fourth member of the band...

    IAN GRANDY

  • Gotta love JD and Jeanne!

  • geddy hasnt been able to sing temples like this since grace under pressure i believe

  • i was there but do not remember!!!

  • sic

  • After watching the Beyond the Lighted Stage dvd, I was wondering if they were going use this footage. I had this on VHS as far back as 1988. I agree with mpc3po, there HAS to be more footage or at least better quality from a master source. It kills me they didn't use more footage like this on their new dvd.

  • Geddy was so alive jumping around stage and having fun before moving pictures...then it seems like he lost steam, and his high voice...but funny thing is in recent years hes began to run and jump around the stage again and it looks like they are all having more fun...hope we see many more albums and even more compilations from rush!

  • @unlikeanyotherhuman He is now "John Roberts", anchor on the CNN morning desk. He almost had Katie Couric's job at CBS. As for that silly girl, she has her own syndicated fashion show and canadian fashion publication. My, how they have grown up.

  • Good job he improved from the 80s because he sings very bad here

  • @medwards8820 Sounds great to me, on pitch and in key.

  • @Annonymus121

and best of all they are moving it along at an exciting tempo !!

  • Holy Crap! Not only was I at this show but it was my first concert.

  • They were at the top of their game at this Waves show.May 21,1980.I saw them the night before in CT and was lucky enough to score 90 minutes of that show on cassette. The original tape got lost ,but I have a very good copy.If you look closely, you will see Geddy has a bandage on one of his fingers on his left hand.He was involved in an accident with a door slamming shut on his hand four days before at a hotel in R.Island and canceled the next two shows,Cape Cod Coliseum and Portland,ME.

  • 30 years ago right now !!

  • It's from the Permanent Waves tour based on the length of hair that all three have.

  • Jedzxor: You're right on the money. For this tour they used to open their shows w/ Overture & Temples Of Syrinx (Moving Pictures Tour). This clip is either from the last leg of the Permanent Waves tour or the very beginning of the Moving Pictures tour...

  • OMG! I was at this show...fuckin awesome!

  • This looks a lot like the show, or at least the same tour that the Exit Stage Left was taken from. Songs, such as this one always get cut out of video releases. This may even be from the same show. I think that this is what Alex wore in the ESL video.

  • geds voice is fuckin sick in this recording

  • Other than my band!, It's not just you.

  • Is it just me or is RUSH the greatest band in the universe?

  • Belexes. Remember. If the crew were only allowed the first ten minutes or so. They couldn't have filmed 2112. That is half way thruogh the set from day one. So lets hope this will be released. If not officially. Then maybe someone will release on the boot market. Lets just hope it is not gone. Keep On Rockin'.

  • Well, I counted nine different camera angles (locations) This footage is not just some tv crew in the pit. This looks as if the band recorded the entire show for official release. Lets hope the footage has not been lost. Remember. They did not have the ease of simply putting data on digital files. They did not exist then. So much great material from the 60s 70s and 80s was lost from all bands. All that remains is audio. But who knows. Video footage somehow just turns up sometimes. Lets hope so.

  • From what I know, that crew was allowed to roll for the first 10-15 minutes of the show only. It's similar to a photo pass where you are only in the pit for the first song or two and then ushered out.

  • Of course they recorded the entire show, they need to release it - and NOW! Before any more RUSH fans DIE.

  • yeah I highly doubt they'd get the cameras rolling to only 2 minutes worth of show... at the very least they must have filmed all of 2112! I really hope we get to see more of this when the documentary comes out!

  • NOOOOOOO DOUBT More great RARE footage VVVery COOL Thanks

  • i wonder if they recorded the whole show, hmm...

  • the new musice! what a show! remember Gary Numan!

  • numa numa

  • As zeus commented, this is evidence of JohnRobertz humble adventure in the MediaMass. So, so funny this guy was out and about and now he's somehow holding down a CNN anchor gig. Go John! Live hard, buddy...! Whatever happenend to GenieBecker?

  • John has come a long way from NM and MM. Kudos for him. Jennie Becker is the great diva behind Fashion TV. International reknown and welcomed around the world, I'd say she has more pull than John. Shame that John could not have made the primetime anchor desk at CBS. That would have been a big prize. Instead, he's going the morning gig @CNN. Not bad, bit not great either. And Gary Numan is the man...android man, but still the man!

  • Geddy will never hit those high notes again. All we have this these videos.

  • is sooo sad

  • Aweful sound! Reggae version. Must've been incredible to bee there live. Love hearing Ged hit them high notes though!

  • I was their sitting in the upper golds close to the stage, what a show!

January 24, 1979 - Memorial Auditorium. Buffalo, New York

  • I think Geddy had too much sugar before the show...

  • lmao look at geddy dancing like a mad man!!! rush pwns all

  • ummmmmmmmmmm wheres the rest of the show?!?!?! drum solo!! anyone!!

  • Anyone who bitches abouuuuuuut the media SUCKS.

    So Cal Up and About

  • And anyone who does anything about should start by kicking your ass by being a senseless clown.

  • Go smoke a cigarette and get a tan fuckface.

  • Go get into a real fight. Lameass.

  • I pound 5 dorks like you before breakfast.

Oh- GSP is a little faggot that won't fight anyone...

  • Memorial Auditorium, which is being demolished as I write this. :-(

  • Rakija rules !

  • god rush is so good

  • does anyone else relize that some of the wide shots dont match the video

  • yep..lol

  • Anyone got the full concert? This is awesome

  • Comment removed

  • Hadn't seen any footage of them from 1980 before, very cool stuff.

  • neil peart...nuff' said

  • Damm this is cool and I was at that show and also John Rob erts humble beginnings on CityTv's the New Music show and now main anchor on CNN...friggin priceless

  • Oh baby!

  • I agree with Cash2112. The thing is I have heard Rush is so afraid of releasing inferior quality in their eyes but Rushfans want it anyway. Am I right? More rare Rush footage please!

  • Rush should release any and all old concert footage like this on DVD, like Led Zeppelin did several years back. This is freakin awesome!

  • 2112 is just such an amazing song

  • Wow, this was the only concert that I ever went to see. 1980, Buffalo, Rush. I cant believe someone has video of this. Thanks for the memory trip.

  • wow man, you are lucky to have BEEN AT this show...I was only 4... AHhhh... 1980.. This is PRIME Rush ERA... This is AMAZING. I'd give anything to see more of this

  • JD Roberts and Jeanne are so young here!

  • Is it just me or does Neil have long hair and maybe a moustache in this video? I could have sworn that he cut all that off sometime between Hemispheres and Permanent Waves (1978-1980)? Thanks...

  • Oops...nevermind. It seems that the lighting just wasn't so good on Neil. I guess his hair is short and no moustache. Sorry about that...

  • dude. this is epic.

  • my goal in life: set myself up financially to go to EVERY show on the next tour...EVERY SNGLE SHOW...front row too!!! made it to 27 Snakes & Arrows shows, time to step it up! who could possibly get enough of these guys!?!?!?!?!?!

  • It was true then. It's still true NOW! This band KICKS ASS ON SO MANY LEVELS!!!!

  • Aw Man , Where can we find more of this concert??

  • Where are they now?

J.D. (John) Roberts is a heavy-hitter on CNN.

    Jeanne Bekker -- still hot!

  • Dude...the rest of this show's footage HAS to be out there somewhere!!! this was a pro shoot...This show feels monumental!!! SO SICK.. please find and post!!

  • It was and still is common for news outlets to record 1 or 2 songs at the beginning of a concert for broadcast. I doubt that the whole show exists but if you watch closely, there are some cuts that don't match the audio...a couple of wide shots.

  • I've seen a little bit of Xanadu footage from this show on The Story of Rush. I really hope the entire show is out there somewhere!

  • Yeah, I'd be in line to get this too. I love the 1980 tour. Too bad I got into them just after it wrapped up.

  • @mpc3po I know this is an old post, but to shed some light on it. When any camera crew and/or photogs are present to video or take pictures at a concert, the GENERAL rule is 1.) First 2-3 songs ONLY 2.) Shots are from the Barricade, stage left or right, Balconies, or pre determined spots ONLY. All this is done for a few reasons. The first few songs are normally not the hits from the current album. This is the deal worked out with the Local Labor Union who NORMALLY is in ownership of the stage.

  • The video @ 1:43 looks SOOOO badass!

  • Saw them in 1982...so stoned still so cool, still stoned and it's still cool. My first concert. UFO opened for them at Hara in Dayton before they went "commercial" Exit Stage Left..................

  • This is so badass......my screen just melted.

  • If you read "Hammer of the Gods," the Led Zeppelin biography, Jimmy Page, in the very early 80's when asked about bands that he admires, mentions Rush.

  • Damn, three guys.

  • rush kicks ass!

  • <3 RUSH!!

  • that was killer.. stuff

  • This clip was on this site in the past and then it disappeared. Thank you for putting it back up, I missed it. (Never take it down haha)

  • Jeeeezzzzz... HOW COOL IS THAT!?! I almost died!! :)

Thanxxx for posting and LONG LIVE YOUTUBE

  • sorry guys, but the way he sings the high part of freewill today (hear the snakes and arrows live cd) is much better than on exit stage left. It's full voice and much powerfull and less irritating than the "throat voice" (what you call falsetto i think) he had in the past. He said in an interview that he can't stand anymore the "screeching" voice he had and propbably chose to sing differently. I too miss the way he was rocking though but he sings in more various ways now.

  • he never used falsetto in the past. I know what you mean though. With Freewill, in the past since his voice was more naturally high he didnt really think about that part too much so whatever came out, came out. But nowadays his voice is hangin in there but he probably has to really focus and he does a great job. He must get the worst headaches.

  • I prefer his high voice by far...irritating, no f'ing way! His voice has changed with age, there's no mystery about it. Listen to Elton John or Ian Anderson to get a similar example. I could listen to Geddy's older singing from the late 70's for hours...it's perfect for the music. Nowadays, I find his singing kind of non-descript. Just OK.

  • Oh My God!! I've only had an 8 secong excerpt of that for the past 19 years...Thank you!! I had given up hope of ever seeing that whole clip. You rock!! Joe

  • Holy shit! I was at this show! Someone was whipping a frisbee around. Geddy told the crowd to stop or they'd stop playing. The entire crowd responded like a repremanded child "OK"... it was hilarious.

  • =win

  • Wow! what a rarity. This is awesome - Thanks!

  • Oh man...the Permanent Waves Tour! Geddy still had his falsetto. They played a great mix of their material. I would love to see more of this; it must exist somewhere. Thanks for posting!

  • Yep, except he didn't sign with a falsetto. It was full voice.

  • I stand corrected. Full voice...I love it that high!

  • He might be doing more falsetto these days, but back then he was hitting those notes for real. Not sure what happened to his voice though. There are singers out there his age that can still hit those high notes, like Sammy Hagar. It's a mystery to me.

  • Nice clip. I don't get the description, though.
