thanks for posting! just started working on some of the simpler evans' transcriptions and your video is GREAT instruction........ combined with looking at the Jack Reilly 6 and 7-part voicings in his Bill Evans harmony book. as a side note, does anyone know which recording the transcription for "Emily" in the Artistry of Bill Evans transcription book comes from?
@theivoryhermit There is a book by Mark Levine about dropped seconds.. its not easy, but it sounds really nice..
First you might learn whats called 'block style' So a c chord voiced from the top down would be: C A G E C .. then you 'drop' the second.. ie, the chord is now: C G E C with A played by left hand.. you knew that i bet..
I wish I knew, no pun intended, why you left out the turnaround - I liked it without, and I loved your interpretation of this classic. It is really wonderful that you are taking the the time to share your knowledge and talent. Thank you!
One of my favorite tunes! I don't know if it's your intent, but between you and Lot2learn, I've gone back to Jazz piano because I've learned so much from you. I've played for 50 years, but I lost my 3rd finger in the right hand. I learned from you to use 2 and 4 on runs; I never knew that! Thanks for giving back my JAZZ!!
Doug, I can't tell you how much I admire your playing! This is the style of playing I find most difficult and yet you make it look so effortless. Great subs and movement throughout and nice job on the sight modulation. I like the slightly shifted camera angle giving plenty of room for those valuable comments. *****

Your stuff is so good, playing and teaching-wise.
I can't get me head around drop 2's - any ideas for practice?

In a ballad, is it necessary to play the root note in the bass voice for every chord in the progression?
EroicaFuneral 2 years ago
@EroicaFuneral usually when you play solo you add them in because there's no bass player

Not only am I enjoying your videos, but I can also learn so much from the lessons you give in them. You are one of the best on Youtube in my opinion.
This song is one of my favourite. 'Prelude to a kiss' comes second. 'Blue Bossa' has even more variations...
In other words... Keep it up Jazz man!

The way you harmonise the songs is really master-class.I never become tired to listen it.
Thank you also for the clear explanations.

Whenever I watch one of your videos, I just want to crack open a bottle of wine and sip it slowly. ^_^
Your playing is like a delicacy and the comments even more so.
5 stars Doug. You deserve a bigger rating system on a scale of 8-10. Your playing never drops beyond 8 out of 10 and even that is rare.
