Or is she trying to infer the black vote should be for gay marriage because most blacks vote democratic and should have followed lock step with the liberal view of gay marriage? @gejost With all due respect, I don't see how you could look at this and not see a contradiction. A the majority of California's African-American demographic, who historically fought for equality and justice, voted to deny equality and justice to another group. That's a contradiction.
Point is: she's not blaming anyone. She's taking a more in-depth look at the outcome.
She said, a higher percentage of black people were against gay marriage. She further said, they amount to only 10 percent of the vote involved. You seem to have misrepresented what she said.
It's not about about the percentage, it's about the principle. The Civil Rights movement was aimed towards gaining equality for African-Americans and other minorities. Prop 8 was proposed to give the LGBT community some basic civil rights. Regardless of it's size in comparison to the other ethnic percentages, a majority of the African-American demographic voted to deny them civil rights.

This is not surprising at all, unfortunately. Many blacks/african-americans proudly let their local churches control their minds when it comes to moral/social issues and then try to ignore the hypocrisy. I think there's even a sense of one-up-ness to it, i.e. "I may be black, but at least I'm not gay." It took my sister being gay for my parents to finally relent on the homophobia, but even now I know they'd jump for joy if she divorced her partner and married a man.

It's not about about the percentage, it's about the principle. The Civil Rights movement was aimed towards gaining equality for African-Americans and other minorities. Prop 8 was proposed to give the LGBT community some basic civil rights. Regardless of it's size in comparison to the other ethnic percentages, a majority of the African-American demographic voted to deny them civil rights.
Maddock is analyzing the ideological contradiction.
It's a journalistic technique, not racism.

This is not surprising at all, unfortunately. Many blacks/african-americans proudly let their local churches control their minds when it comes to moral/social issues and then try to ignore the hypocrisy. I think there's even a sense of one-up-ness to it, i.e. "I may be black, but at least I'm not gay." It took my sister being gay for my parents to finally relent on the homophobia, but even now I know they'd jump for joy if she divorced her partner and married a man.

This is a lousy and misleading title. Rachel Maddow was looking for an anaylsis into why so many voted against gay rights. This hits home with Maddow because she is a well educated progressive. The economic boom in the 80's and 90's were the result of Reganomics implemented by Regan. I for one have never met a BLACK person just varying colors of brown, just like i have never met a WHITE person with out the genetic condition albinism. Why can't this be people politics or American politics. This is segregation. Why do we even bring up skin color it just makes feel different from each other.
