  • Too funny Elias! For real, is one of those guys you??

  • Sorry, folks. But I can only say: ILMAO. -- Hohohoho! You are the most hilarious folks I've ever "met" in my life. Hahahahahahahaha! -- BTW: Merry Christmas!

  • Sheer genius but WTF? It's like doing acid without doing acid...

  • 3:37 No Problem (interpreted by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers)

  • It is simply great !

I'd be very happy if someone in the know could translate what is spoken with each of the above mentioned songs, because i don't speak japanese. thank you in advance.

  • Sheer genius - but WTF???

  • This leaves me speechless. It's like a really, really, really, really weird dream.

The question that keeps running through my head is "WHY are they doing this?"

Hilarious and unsettling at the same time. I must watch it again!!

  • Donna Lee ahahaha!!

  • And in 10 minutes, Japan has done more for jazz than America has in a long time.

  • @TheDrFunkenstein about poter, redman, rosenwinkel, blake?

  • That was truly far-fucking-out! How clever the Japanese. Why can't the Chinese do a little culture borrowing from them the way they have from the Chinese?

  • Specific times when each standard plays: Now’s the Time (0:00) | Lotus Blossom (0:17) | Milestones (0:44) | Misterioso (1:39) | Blue Monk (1:52) | Sister Sadie (2:02) | Waltz For Debby (2:16) | ? (3:37) (Which one is this?) | Blues March (4:27) | Doxy (4:57) | Five Spots After Dark (5:13) | Cleopatra’s Dream (5:51) | Comin’ Home Baby (6:27) | Maiden Voyage (6:50) | Donna Lee (7:31) | Cherokee (8:15) | Fables of Faubus (8:41) | ‘Round Midnight (9:04) | Moment’s Notice (9:14) | St. Thomas (9:45)

  • 桃太郎歌うめぇやン

  • ひどい

  • なんじゃこりゃ

  • This is the most bizzare thing I have -ever- seen in my life, but it's genius.

  • this is great! ha, ha, ha!!!

  • Well you must respect the Japanese for adopting an afro American art form so completely that some one has attempted to write an Opera around so many iconic Jazz arrangements. Perhaps the libretto is more important than the jarring visuals

  • this is the best video of all the videos

  • 「負けた〜 何でもお持ちください」といい、「勝ったー 勝ったー」と出てくるあたりといい、Fables of Faubusの完成度が高いなぁ。

    マリーンに初めて愛を感じた。w

  • donna lee is the best one at 7:30

  • I love it at 1:56 when the character on the right checks out the kids business.

  • whats up fam juggalette here on youtube woop woop. i have no fam so send me a shout and show some love

  • Wasn't Momotaro a taro (a boy)?, I think it's portrayed by a girl here..whatever it's hilarious!

  • I heard about this video on The World yesterday. I am disappointed .

  • Well, someday when you aren't, I'm sure we'd all like to know about that too.

  • This makes my whole life perfect.

  • It's a skit on the Japanese version of 'The Tonight Show' from the 80's. They are reenacting a popular fable where an old couple can't have children but a peach floats down the river and there's a boy inside. I know weird, but if you were Japanese you would know this story.

The jazz is in there because back in the 80's american jazz was cool...especially the obscure stuff.

    i heard it on NPR

  • It wasn't on NPR . It was PRI

  • why and how does this exist?

  • hilarious!

  • Omg Long live the Japanese.

  • Surreal. They don't make em like this anymore...

  • This is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

  • genius

  • I have NO IDEA how a -1 appears next to my comment. This is the best!

  • legendary!!

  • I commented before I saw the Donna Lee bit - bloody awesome!! The chick who plays Momotaro's got a great voice too

  • Absolutely the greatest! I feel the LOVE! for the music!

  • Wow-thanks for posting this.Priceless.

  • How can I buy the full un-cut opera??!! Can it be viewed online somewhere? What is the official title?

  • watch?v=Fh_4r8bXGbk

It's from the TV show "今夜は最高!" (WHAT A FANTASTIC NIGHT!)

  • Who is that woman? What a singer! 5 stars.

  • A total trip!

  • I rove it

  • Out to runch!

  • It's really awesome!!

  • uh.......yeah

  • What's brilliant is the way the tunes were chosen to fit the storyline. For example as she cuts open the peach and finds Momotaro they're playing and singing Misterioso and then Blues March when he goes off to battle the demons.

  • Bonzai !! Charlie Parker!!

  • That was fantastic! Reminds me of all these stupid broadway shows where the score is hit songs of a popular artist (aka Mama Mia)....BROADWAY PRODUCERS TAKE NOTICE, we should have shows based on the tunes of BIRD or SONNY ROLLINS or HERBIE HANCOCK......imagine the possibilities!!!

  • This is a Japanese folk tale called Momotaro (little peach boy). The old lady with the eye patch (and the bird later on) is a famous comedian in Japan and this is from his show. He is a trumpet player and a big fan of jazz.

  • Priceless.

  • Too bad we don't understand Japanese. I bet it's funny as hell. There's probably tons of puns in it. And these people know the music. Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is something you might have seen on the Steve Allan show 50 years ago.

  • That was freakin' awesome. One more reason to love Japan.

  • Its so awful but somehow I cant stop watching....

  • oh. my. god.

  • amazing!!!!! I'm crying,,,,,

  • no wonder EVERYONE loves jazz

  • The titles missed Maiden Voyage while they are in that boat.

  • Masterbard1, I am with you. WTF!?? Magnificent. Glad Bill Evans wasn't alive when this was originally broadcast!

  • THIS IS MY WTF VIDEO OF THE YEAR

    yes the caps were intended

  • I am forever changed... in a good way. and now I want to go o Japan more than ever!

  • holy s$%t

this is beyond anything I ever expected to see in my life. . . i may not get to sleep later

  • This was on TV, in Japan, Mar.01.1986.

The dog was played by Seiichi Nakamura, saxphonist for Yosuke Yamashita trio in the late '60s. was also a pupil of George Colman's.

  • (...i am subscribing to this channel right away...because i simply can't wait to see the sequel!...)

    sincerely,

    bill mcbirnie

  • This is actually a true story. It almost exactly reflects my experiences as a musician. Uncanny.

  • @shedworkvideo

yeah - sometimes I'm that cat, sometimes the bird...

  • ok.. they don't swing but they're definitely giving shooby taylor a run for his money.

  • Im sorry... but NOBODY can give shooby taylor a run for his money.

  • i guess you're right. :)

  • Thx to Japan we don´t need Aliens. The most inspiring and fascinating modern culture.

    7:31 is fucking crazy. :-)

  • This is one of the strangest and most interesting videos I've ever seen- really intriguing from socio-historical perspective. You wonder what inspired them... it definitely should be in Japan's figurative library of congress and be preserved for a hundred years, so they and we can all sit back and watch it then

  • lmao donna lee is the BEST one!! and the outfit is very fitting. 7:31

  • I think my favorite bit is "Donna Lee" ...that's some MEAN singin' right there! :-)

  • At the island, Momotarō and his animal friends penetrated the demons' fort and beat the demons' leader, Ura, as well as his army, into surrendering. Momotarō returned home with his new friends, and his family lived comfortably from then on.

  • The child explained that he had been sent by Heaven to be their son. The couple named him Momotarō, from momo (peach) and tarō (eldest son in the family).

Years later, Momotarō left his parents for an island called Onigashima to destroy the marauding oni (demons or ogres) that dwelt there. En route, Momotarō met and befriended a talking dog, monkey, and pheasant, who agreed to help him in his quest.

  • This is a show by comedian, jazz fan Tamori (he plays the old woman.) Here's the story from wikipedia: According to the present form of the tale (dating to the Edo Period), Momotarō came to Earth inside a giant peach, which was found floating down a river by an old, childless woman who was washing clothes there. The woman and her husband discovered the child when they tried to open the peach to eat it.

  • I think it was made for the popular comedy TV show in Japan---it seems like was done in late 80's. The guy--who played an old lady & the bird---he is the host of the show and known for a jazz fan. He also owns a jazz club in Tokyo.

The story is based on a Japanese folk tale. I don't see anything racist about it. I left Japan in '89 (and I rarely watched TV before then), so I might be wrong. Correct me if the information is wrong.

  • That's crazy, man! Great. Even if I thought of inventing this I wouldn't come even close. Made my day happy!

  • it'd be hilarious if that trumpet in the vid was a jupiter.

  • The future of jazz.

  • I'd love to get the translation on this stuff. Also, what the hell does that woman have on the crotch of her body suit in Sister Sadie?

  • a dick?

  • maybe some balls too?

    :)

  • @myleswein I think its an udder hahaha. It looks like she's wearing a cow suit

  • @myleswein this is just the story of momotaro in jazz form (look it up). still, i believe that this qualifies as one of those "crazy japanese" moments. and in answer to you're question: its japan, don't question it, just enjoy. you'll hurt yourself trying to understand it.

  • Pops was right! Upon hearing begbop, didn't he say to Diz, "That's Chinese music!"

    George Z

  • Genial and very funny!!!!!

  • I guess I just don't get jazz.

  • wild stuff!

  • wow, they really nail all the classics!
