I'm from Spain and living in NYC when this was seen everyone in Spain was calling it was fixed, cheated by the soviets or the refs either way it was fucked up controversy my wife is from Australia and she told me when she was there they were accusing the that british fuck for fixing the game
I couldn't understand why a medal from 40 years ago would still make people angry and then I tried to imagine how I would have felt if Canada had a Gold medal hockey game stolen from them, and I became extremely angry that the US didn't get the Gold.
@mandingoblanco69 I will never accept the fact that USSR won that game. And they will accept the fact that they will have their asses handed to in London this summer by Lebron, Kobe, D-Howard, Blake Griffin, and Kevin Durant.
And who gives a fuck about the silver medals - only the Jew media networks wank on about that.. Can't go back in time to the actual medal ceremony anyway. We go by what the record says, and the official medal ceremony stands as the final record. The receivers of Olympic medals can covet and frame their medals, they can sell them off, they can wipe their bums with them - its not an issue. Who - in their right minds - cares.
The USA were lucky that the Soviets didn't score a two pointer a few seconds before the controversy, instead retrieving the ball and getting it out to this Doug Collins whom the Soviets then were fouled for, for allegedly fouling Doug Collins. The Sovies didn't score that two pointer then - fair and square - but I'm just saying they should have, at that level. And that would have been it, had the Soviets scored then.
@SimonDolan you're an asshole. Did you even watch this video? This was worst officiating in the history of sports. They have every right to refuse the medals. You know whose attitude stinks? yours.
That's cheating if I ever seen one. The referees were incompetent. What ref tell you not to defend the inbounds pass too? The Int'l Olympic Committee should give the 1972 U.S. basketball team the gold medal due to the controversial events
@21sttnmemphis what kind of ref starts play without making sure that the clock is ready to go and set properly? These refs weren't fit to officiate a game between 5 year olds.

@bogdanmitrovic fair and sqaure my ass you idiot, now sure america can be snobbish but the game was unfair from the start, you had major league level soviet players playing against a basketball team that drew its players from college rather than the NBA so add that to the fact that the gave the soviet union 3!!! opportunities and still me it was a fair game, then your lying to your self and everybody else reading this comment
@bogdanmitrovic You can have basketball unfairly Bogdan (what the fuck kind of name is that). We really beat you fair and square in hockey anyways. FUCK RUSSIA!!!!!!!!!!!! SUCKAVIC A DICKAVIC!!!!!!

Thank dear God, many red bastards now lie in shallow graves covered with lime from the hands of my family. So as some of your compatriots (unfortunately mostly hispano-black cannon fodder) that dared to come down here in '99.
So it would be nice to come back again and your stinky Yank asses could taste some more willow sticks!

@ergotreliaris Learn some english first of all. Secondly, they're were 3 rules infractions you stupid idiot. ONE, the stupid coach ran outside of his boundary, thats illegal and a technical foul. TWO, right before the 3 seconds was put up, the player had his left foot on the line when throwing the ball inbounds. and the biggest one, the ref has to see the TIMEOUT from the coach to ENFORCE the TIMEOUT. CASE FUCKING CLOSED. Oh and learn some damn english before you post anything.
arrogant American scum, no one cares that you aren't taking your silver metals so get over yourself. You're just embarrassing yourself carrying on like this.
@magnumruthlesskilla So why don't you move on? From what I've heard, the IOC cares very much that the USA didn't take those medals, and the Soviet players are still whining about how it upset them that the US team didn't show up for the medal ceremonies.
@magnumruthlesskilla You seem to think the American players should move on. If they have to, so should you. Quit worrying about the "arrogant American scum". Some whiny Soviet players are in need of your wisdom, so take it to them.
@magnumruthlesskilla You must care a little, or you wouldn't be posting about it. Yes, the USSR died 20 years ago, but it was alive during this basketball game. Not sure exactly what the demise of the Soviet Union has to do with this subject.
Interesting how the American players are somehow heralded as "heroes" for refusing their medals. Isn't it kind of bad sportsmanship to be such sore losers? Sure, the referees made a mistake, but referees are only humans, too...
All of these events are so insignificant though, next to the murdering of the Israeli sportsmen. Rest in peace.
When I was a child in the '80s, Hungary was the part of the Eastern block. And I saw a highlight film from the 1972 Munich Olympics. Probably you can guess how this game was narrated. It was set up as a Soviet miracle. Like a propaganda film. That anything is possible if you believe in yourself, and of course in communism. I guess you all know how it was back then. Still it's strange to see, what I heard then were lies. If for nothing else, it's good that the World has opened up (Youtube).
I am in a similar situation, in another part of life (not sports). And I can undersatnd what those US players were and are going trough. This is devastating. It almost takes more than a man, to get up from this, and find a way to live on. Ignorance probably is the best way to do it. It kinda works for me, at least to survive.
Its obvious the game was rigged but the Russkies won and it should and will stay that way. Lets just look forward to the 2012 Olympics and see what Russia can do against the pure domination of Bron, Wade, Kobe, D.Rose, D. Howard, D. Williams, K. Love, Durant, Melo. Not even with a global team can u F with that. have fun playing for that silver.
If you look really closely you will see that indeed LeBron did travel:) jk this was complete garbage the olympic committee should have done something to right this wrong
the olympics is unfair to americans many countries that take part their people but not americans. also a lot of foreign competitors are pros but not the US.
oh and whatever happened with the chinese and their "scandle"
@chitownbrotha if you ever do anything in your life which means something, and then you get cheated out of it, because of bad calls and corruption, please don't come bitching on youtube either, no one will care!!
How are any of your idiots saying USSR won this fair ans square? The ref ignores the actual injured player on the court (US player). THe Soviets run the ball downcourt for 2 seconds and call a timeout. They have no timeouts. Thats an automatic technical. Then after giving time, they ignore the fact it should be 1 second left. A fake 3 seconds left, they're down one. US is trying to play defense and the ref tells the US player to backoff from playing defense on the inbound. THAT IS RIGGED.
LOL americans still crying about what happened almost over 40 years ago haha get the fuck out of here, YOU LOST, get over it, and go claim the second place medals instead of bitching on youtube!
@chitownbrotha What are you talking about? That was a blown call. The U.S.A. should have won that if it wasn't for those medoling refs. That was when games being fixed was born
@chitownbrotha SMD you fkn prick that game was rigged (It was during the cold war), right now Russians will even tell you that it was rigged... sorry but USA is going to dominate basketball in the Olympics and FIBA forever they're just going to win year after year after year so STFU
The worst part is that the ref waves off the American player trying to defend the inbound pass. With a guy in the way, that last pass would have been harder.
The Soviets just couldn't win a game the honest way. They were allowed to send their best professional athletes to the Olympics for many years when America's best players (pros) were banned from playing. It's a well known fact that Olympic figure skating was fixed, they finally admitted that. Soviet athletes were a bunch of vodka-drinking cheaters.
look at 3:05 why is ref try to help the ussr player when collins was the 1 that is seriously hurt? Too much do-over in this ridiculous game. USSR player shouldnt inbound the ball if they called timeout. If the ball was inbounded then the time should start. ref's fault for rushing and not recognizing the timeout call. Is USSR fault for in bounding the ball to start the play. they shouldnt reset the clock to 3 seconds. Everything is correct except for the win and the reset of the clock.
Collins makes the best point - once the Russian coaches and players left the bench to complain about the clock, that was a technical foul and therefore a turnover and the end of the game. There's no gray area here, those are the rules.
What was so controversial? It was all fair, the game was fairly won. The Soviets called a time out before the free throw which should have been awarded and 3 seconds on the clock was left (that's what the guy with the three fingers was pointing, he was there to make sure that they got it right, he didn't call it himself, he was alerting to how much should have been left on the clock) whose fault is it that the refs didn't see it? Should the russians be penalized? no lol fair game! A+
@andrewr62 no there are actually books written on this (go on wikipedia, there are references as well). The Russian coach asked the score table for a time out, the two international refs didn't see it or want to give it. The score board table tried to stop the second free throw by sounding the horn, that didn't work (there was no accident, that's impossible) he ran out to confirm that there should have been 3 seconds left when the time out was called and awarded, play resumed nothing there...
I don't see what is wrong with the game, Yanks got hussled due to their inexperience, they were loosing entire game and almost won it by fluke. If they organized themselves better Belov wouldn't even get the chance to shoot the las shot. And what's the story with those medals at the end?
@soopie1 "I don't see what is wrong with the game"
The game officials (the refs and the people at the scorer's table) were totally incompetent, and the olympic officials were clearly biased against USA basketball. The secretary general of FIBA got involved with the game at the end even though he had no right or authority. It's ridiculous that Dwight Jones was ejected without warning for getting into a "fight" but the guy who almost killed Doug Collins was barely even penalized.
Haha, what a load of shit. Its such a transparent case of corruption. 3 of the 5 nations that voted to deny the appeal were Soviet bloc nations. If they did vote in the Soviets favor, their families would of been executed. lolol Why do people trust dictatorships at all? Its so sad that athletes deserving of their prize went wanting.
Bill Walton had bad knees. He wanted to not have to practice hard to make the team, just play hard in the games. Hank (coach) said, if he wants to play, he has to try out for the team just like everybody else.
Although he would make the team for sure, he couldn't put so much stress on his knees by having to go full out before the Olympics even started. Sad in my opion, but in this was kind of standard in the olden days.
The Soviets and the corrupt IOC should have never had that extra chance. If you watched the whole video you would have seen and heard that while Doug Collins was hitting his second free throw, an illegal time out was attempted by the Soviet coach. By rule, this is a technical foul, giving the USA another free throw and THE BALL BACK. Therefore, regardless of any other chances handed them by an intimidated referee staff, the opportunity should have never come about.
Sorry, but the Soviets won this. If the timer wasn't set right the 3 seconds should have been replayed. The timer being messed up was the officials fault and the US should not have gotten a victory on a play that wasn't set right.
@happydog500 This video neglects to mention that earlier in the game one of the soviet bench warmers deliberately got into an altercation with Dwight Jones, the USA's leading scorer and rebounder, and the refs immediately ejected them both with no warning at all.
Well, there's no doubt about it. The Americans deserved Gold and the Soviets took it away.
I'm not sure how the rules were back then, but that foul on Doug Collins should have been called a Flagrant, and the U.S. should have received the ball back.
@marblemadness22 The Soviets didn't take it away, the officials did. There were no flagrant fouls back then, which is totally ridiculous. Not in college, pro, or international play. Even if they existed, the ref probably wouldn't have called it anyway.
Mighty people should hold the hit and respect arch rivals. That's the phylosophy of soviet sport. I don't see anything like this in american behaviour. So that's the reason why the whole world don't like US.
@Vasil108 We would respect the soviets if they had won their medals fair and square...but they didn't so we have no tolerance for them nor for anyone else who may have taken part in this crap
@Vasil108 Respecting competition isn't just a part of soviet sports, vlad.
Respecting rivals is not part of soviet philosophy, anyway. The soviets hate competition. That's the foundation of their social ideology: Eliminate rivals.
And don't forget the Doug Collins free-throw that gave the USA the lead. The scorer sounded the horn just as Collins shot to try to distract him, but he made it anyway. This should be clear enough evidence that the scorer was biased against the USA and admitted an error to give the USSR another shot.
@TheYear4444 "The scorer sounded the horn just as Collins shot to try to distract him, but he made it anyway. This should be clear enough evidence that the scorer was biased against the USA"
I think it's just clear evidence of the utter incompetency of the officials.
IOC, do the right thing and award the USA a double Gold medal. The 40th anniversary is in 2012 at the London Games. There is a precident for this. The IOC awarded double Golds in figure skating after a judge scandal. Do the right thing!!!
They put time back on the clock in the NBA all the time. Total lack of responsibility on the part of the US players and coaches. Maybe the US players should just accept the responsibility that they let the Soviets score on a full court pass that should have been extremely easy to stop. Lets do double gold medals for everyone! Well, not everyone just US athletes (Canada is basically America's finger puppet). That really cheapens the olympics. @chippewaman1975
@sscharlesk I actually got a chance to meet and speak with Kenny Davis, the U.S. men's basketball team captain of the '72 Olympics. I asked Mr. Davis if he got a chance to talk to any of the Soviet players in the years since the infamous game in Munich. He told me that a Soviet player actually told him that they (The Americans) were cheated out of the Gold medal. That is sure interesting that they would ADMIT that there were many mistakes made.
Really. Which one? Why has that player never come forward? The definitive work on this controversy is 3 Seconds From Gold which was shown on HBO I believe. None of the Russians there said any such thing. USA was simply outcoached and outplayed in the late moments. Also one might question the timekeeper and the other employees of the game. Germans and Russians have a long history with one another. Food for thought. @chippewaman1975
@sscharlesk Of course a player would not publicly step up and say "my team doesn't deserve the medal" don't be a fool. But the fact of the matter is EVEN IF the timekeeper had not made that error the Soviet player still shot and missed from full court. The ending of this game was a complete farce.
NO Russians should move on that their not a superpower anymore because of their lying ,cheating, stealing Communist goverment !!!!! BUTTHURT???????

TWO, right before the 3 seconds was put up, the player had his left foot on the line when throwing the ball inbounds. and the biggest one, the ref has to see the TIMEOUT from the coach to ENFORCE the TIMEOUT. CASE FUCKING CLOSED. Oh and learn some damn english before you post anything.

@magnumruthlesskilla So why don't you move on? From what I've heard, the IOC cares very much that the USA didn't take those medals, and the Soviet players are still whining about how it upset them that the US team didn't show up for the medal ceremonies.

Interesting how the American players are somehow heralded as "heroes" for refusing their medals. Isn't it kind of bad sportsmanship to be such sore losers? Sure, the referees made a mistake, but referees are only humans, too...

Georg1979 6 months ago
I am in a similar situation, in another part of life (not sports). And I can undersatnd what those US players were and are going trough. This is devastating. It almost takes more than a man, to get up from this, and find a way to live on. Ignorance probably is the best way to do it. It kinda works for me, at least to survive.
Georg1979 6 months ago
Its obvious the game was rigged but the Russkies won and it should and will stay that way. Lets just look forward to the 2012 Olympics and see what Russia can do against the pure domination of Bron, Wade, Kobe, D.Rose, D. Howard, D. Williams, K. Love, Durant, Melo.

The worst part is that the ref waves off the American player trying to defend the inbound pass. With a guy in the way, that last pass would have been harder.
Tantamime 8 months ago

There's no gray area here, those are the rules.

uberhaxor69 9 months ago
What was so controversial? It was all fair, the game was fairly won. The Soviets called a time out before the free throw which should have been awarded and 3 seconds on the clock was left (that's what the guy with the three fingers was pointing, he was there to make sure that they got it right, he didn't call it himself, he was alerting to how much should have been left on the clock) whose fault is it that the refs didn't see it? Should the russians be penalized? no lol fair game! A+
Shapkin1502 9 months ago
@Shapkin1502
Perhaps your Russian, but you are probably the only person on the planet who believes that.
andrewr62 9 months ago
@andrewr62 no there are actually books written on this (go on wikipedia, there are references as well). The Russian coach asked the score table for a time out, the two international refs didn't see it or want to give it. The score board table tried to stop the second free throw by sounding the horn, that didn't work (there was no accident, that's impossible) he ran out to confirm that there should have been 3 seconds left when the time out was called and awarded, play resumed nothing there...
Shapkin1502 9 months ago
is only sport. if the referees failed, is part of sport. USA lost the game, and thats all.

I don't see what is wrong with the game, Yanks got hussled due to their inexperience, they were loosing entire game and almost won it by fluke. If they organized themselves better Belov wouldn't even get the chance to shoot the las shot. And what's the story with those medals at the end?
soopie1 9 months ago
@soopie1 "I don't see what is wrong with the game"
The game officials (the refs and the people at the scorer's table) were totally incompetent, and the olympic officials were clearly biased against USA basketball. The secretary general of FIBA got involved with the game at the end even though he had no right or authority. It's ridiculous that Dwight Jones was ejected without warning for getting into a "fight" but the guy who almost killed Doug Collins was barely even penalized.
KayBeeEee1983 9 months ago
Haha, what a load of shit. Its such a transparent case of corruption. 3 of the 5 nations that voted to deny the appeal were Soviet bloc nations. If they did vote in the Soviets favor, their families would of been executed. lolol Why do people trust dictatorships at all? Its so sad that athletes deserving of their prize went wanting.
brethomuel786 9 months ago
Bill Walton had bad knees. He wanted to not have to practice hard to make the team, just play hard in the games. Hank (coach) said, if he wants to play, he has to try out for the team just like everybody else.
Although he would make the team for sure, he couldn't put so much stress on his knees by having to go full out before the Olympics even started. Sad in my opion, but in this was kind of standard in the olden days.

jeffg24LT21 10 months ago
The Soviets and the corrupt IOC should have never had that extra chance. If you watched the whole video you would have seen and heard that while Doug Collins was hitting his second free throw, an illegal time out was attempted by the Soviet coach. By rule, this is a technical foul, giving the USA another free throw and THE BALL BACK. Therefore, regardless of any other chances handed them by an intimidated referee staff, the opportunity should have never come about.
pfwalsh1 10 months ago
Sorry, but the Soviets won this. If the timer wasn't set right the 3 seconds should have been replayed. The timer being messed up was the officials fault and the US should not have gotten a victory on a play that wasn't set right.

Freak08701 10 months ago
That foul on Doug was the way the Soviets played all game. Very Dirty play the whole way for them.
happydog500 10 months ago
@happydog500 This video neglects to mention that earlier in the game one of the soviet bench warmers deliberately got into an altercation with Dwight Jones, the USA's leading scorer and rebounder, and the refs immediately ejected them both with no warning at all.
KayBeeEee1983 9 months ago
Well, there's no doubt about it. The Americans deserved Gold and the Soviets took it away.
I'm not sure how the rules were back then, but that foul on Doug Collins should have been called a Flagrant, and the U.S. should have received the ball back.
marblemadness22 10 months ago
@marblemadness22 The Soviets didn't take it away, the officials did. There were no flagrant fouls back then, which is totally ridiculous. Not in college, pro, or international play. Even if they existed, the ref probably wouldn't have called it anyway.
KayBeeEee1983 9 months ago
Mighty people should hold the hit and respect arch rivals. That's the phylosophy of soviet sport. I don't see anything like this in american behaviour. So that's the reason why the whole world don't like US.
Vasil108 10 months ago
@Vasil108 We would respect the soviets if they had won their medals fair and square...but they didn't so we have no tolerance for them nor for anyone else who may have taken part in this crap
mcr11996 10 months ago
@Vasil108 Respecting competition isn't just a part of soviet sports, vlad.
Respecting rivals is not part of soviet philosophy, anyway. The soviets hate competition. That's the foundation of their social ideology: Eliminate rivals.

And don't forget the Doug Collins free-throw that gave the USA the lead. The scorer sounded the horn just as Collins shot to try to distract him, but he made it anyway. This should be clear enough evidence that the scorer was biased against the USA and admitted an error to give the USSR another shot.

IOC, do the right thing and award the USA a double Gold medal. The 40th anniversary is in 2012 at the London Games. There is a precident for this. The IOC awarded double Golds in figure skating after a judge scandal. Do the right thing!!!
chippewaman1975 1 year ago
They put time back on the clock in the NBA all the time. Total lack of responsibility on the part of the US players and coaches. Maybe the US players should just accept the responsibility that they let the Soviets score on a full court pass that should have been extremely easy to stop. Lets do double gold medals for everyone! Well, not everyone just US athletes (Canada is basically America's finger puppet). That really cheapens the olympics. @chippewaman1975
sscharlesk 1 year ago
@sscharlesk I actually got a chance to meet and speak with Kenny Davis, the U.S. men's basketball team captain of the '72 Olympics. I asked Mr. Davis if he got a chance to talk to any of the Soviet players in the years since the infamous game in Munich. He told me that a Soviet player actually told him that they (The Americans) were cheated out of the Gold medal. That is sure interesting that they would ADMIT that there were many mistakes made.
chippewaman1975 1 year ago
Really. @chippewaman1975
sscharlesk 1 year ago
@sscharlesk Of course a player would not publicly step up and say "my team doesn't deserve the medal" don't be a fool. But the fact of the matter is EVEN IF the timekeeper had not made that error the Soviet player still shot and missed from full court. The ending of this game was a complete farce.
TheYear4444 11 months ago
@sscharlesk That definitive work was critical of the officials. You must have only heard what you wanted.
