From what i've heard, a tamed cheetah acts more like a dog then a cat, that's why they're much less dangerous then other big felines.

On the other hand, that is a animal capable of killing a gazelle, so it's no wonder they're not a pet material.

You think a purring, content, well-fed cheetah that's familiar with humans is going to snap that suddenly? These aren't Lions or Tigers. Cheetahs can be tamed much more easily. Really... Nearly in every zoo, you will find out the keepers are usually feedign them directly, and not unlike lions. Lions are mostly fed indirective..

@Tw0Dents Actually, unlike other big cat species, cheetah's can be somewhat domesticated... the ancient Egyptians used to frequently keep Cheetah's in the palaces as pets. There is some ethical question regarding this, but it is possible... the biggest obstacle to really domesticating Cheetahs is their breeding habits. They are difficult to breed in captivity. Domestic cats are not truly "tame" either, they just happen to be small...

Technically the definition of a big cat is one that roars and doesn't purr. However cheetahs are grouped as big cats under governmental laws for their safety. In the world of taxonomy, all big cats that roar (lion, panther, tiger, etc.) are genus Panthera, while the cheetah is genus Acinonyx.

Whatever genus they are, they're pretty sweet.
