As long as demand of resources is higher than supply, there will be conflict over those resources. Though our primary reason for space exploration may be "because we can" and "because we want to learn/explore" we will eventually attempt (and perhaps succeed) in colonizing space. 1. They passed the nuclear age without annihilating themselves (something we have not proved ourselves capable of);
2. A galaxy at war is much more likely to invade planets with trainable monkeys than a galaxy at peace, thus the fact that we have not been invaded indicates the galaxy is at peace.
