LOL! I bet the wife was like, omg...my husband's crazy, rowing the boat like some psycho. Oh, and look! All the animals are running away. Greeeaattt :P

George O'Brien's back acting is so phenomenal, I actually wish people acted with their backs more, a lot of people over use their hands and their faces, and forget simple things like posture... it's a surprisingly emotive part of the anatomy...
This film is incredible. The sequence on the boat is so powerful it's amazing. This wasn't the first silent film I ever saw, nor is it the last, but I still am in awe of how powerfully conveyed and expressed the emotions are through pure images moreso than music and dialogue.
This scene reminds me of 'Snow White' when the hunter is about to kill her, but then stops. The Wife's facial expression matches Snow White's exactly xD
I wouldn't be too surprised if Disney was inspired by that scene, salty. Murnau's "Faust" was the major inspiration for the Bald Mountain scene "Fantasia".

WOW!!!! What a powerful and affecting scene! It's amazing that something could still be so potent after all these years. Murnau is a masterful director. The way the husband transforms into a dark brute when he rises in the boat while the wife remains a white light of virtue. The characters are alive! The actors are brilliant and the director is a genius. Thanks so much for posting this!
I absolutely love this film. Thank you so much for posting it. Ms. Gaynor's acting in this particular piece - especially when she's waiting for him to return after bringing the dog back, is incredible.

that with the dog was genius...

Well, they say actors should never work with children and animals, but both are really good in this...
Is this the first example of 'doggie-dar' in cinema history?

Actually the film is pretty highly rated. It's considered one of the 10 best movies ever made. Doesn't get much higher rated than that!

Redeeming Light, I'm curious, since you're
a Chaplin fan. Did you like City Lights?
The mood - tempo- milieu, whatever you want
to call it, is similiar to this.
