I have heard RD several times openly telling this fact, and also giving examples from his own, his father's creations (to be modest, I believe) and occaisionally from fellow musicians. In the conclusion he always told that the Indian system of Ragas and Raginis is so complete that any tune, hummed anywhere - by anybody - even in discord... can be traced back and adjusted or fitted to some specific combination of notes, and thus to one or multiple raga-raginis.
I would like to mention that there are a number of music pieces which travelled across the globe to GOA, DAMAN & DIU. Whenever christians of anglo-indian ethnicity are shown in hindi cinema, some sprinkle of goan music adds more life to the depiction. If one traces back seriously, several pieces today known as Goan Folk-music trace back to some pieces from old movies, but there is no surety if these were also not from old Swedish/Irish/Mexican/Spanish or other folkmusic, creators uncredited.
Fernando Torres song for Liverpool FC was based on this song too

But it certainly gives a kick to the music lover, to trace the oldest known source of a music piece. SO go on... LAGE RAHO..., Well done!

Nice. This music was also featured quite prominently (and repetitively) in the Peter Sellers comedy, Dr. Strangelove
