When I was a kid I had no idea I would become a future musician & music lover. Lennon & mccartney stood side by side on stage & neck & neck in talent but in my youthful eyes they defined manhood for generation of Beatle loving kids. John might have been the most famous but Sir Paul was always my kid favorite. But aw hell, they were both totally cool. Ringo & George also filled our minds with love too but Lennon & Mccartney were our 21st century Mozart & Beethoveen.
@therealraybaby i agree with your thoughts on john and paul but you got the last bit wrong btw. the beatles were in the 20th century, and john (rip) didnt even make there.
@bluemeany *I've always suspected that Paul was the "finnisher" of most of the collaborations w/Lennon. Its impossible not to consider the evidence of their post Beatle years. George was a more successful record seller than John, until he was killed anyway. If not for Pauls presence, the Beatles ledgend likley never happens. But I think Paul hates it when people say that.
@Villeneuve27 and still does...his range and the keys his songs are in are incredible and he's playing revolutionary bass lines, guitar, piano, etc. He's the most talented musician on Earth.
About the "is it live or not ?" discussion, everybody here agrees to say that the music is pre-recorded, but so is the vocal ! You can't get such a clean and balanced vocal sound live on TV. It sounds obvious to me, but just in case my word is not enough, here's what's written about this appearance in the praised "Eight Arms To Hold You" book :
"On this popular UK chat show hosted by Terry Wogan, Paul and band mimed to new studio recordings of two All The Best! oldies, recording details of which are unavailable [...]. The backup "band" consisted of Paul on bass, Linda on keyboards, Chris Whitten on drums, Keith Airey on guitar, Nicky Hopkins on piano and Gary Barnacle on sax."
I agree, so much of Pauls Wings/Solo stuff is overlooked. He is an amazing songwriting talent. And while his Beatles material is legendary, he has written some amazing tracks which deserve more recognition.
@ShellTrek I think it's impossible to prefer one over the other... Wings is, in many respects, an extension of what The Beatles were - or, possibly might have become had they stayed together. In both supergroups, Macca was the driving force. Only difference is, with Wings, the kudos are all his. And rightfully so!
How can you call this cunt a genius. The song as with all his heinous offerings makes no sense at all.He is the most over rated musician of all time. And without doubt the most cuntish person ever to walk the earth.
LOL!, who cares it's Paul and he's got nothing to prove. Is that linda poppin out those nice harmonies ? Paul is awesome. A truly amazing songwriter and singer and musician.
Paul does not say "take it away" before the sax solo -different from the record. I can't believe people can't hear the difference. For instance this version is much slower.
To lliguf: That is not a lip sinc mistake with the sax at 0:45. Those are synthesizer notes as it was on the original recording. That is why the sax is not playing then. This is a sound effects recording with a live vocal and sax. Both are clearly different.
obviously live, the vocals are slightly different, the SOPRANO SAX solo and fills are just completely different. Perfect pitch can tell you if it's in tune or not, that's about it. Yeah, there is a backing vocal track from the master.
sorry to say it is lyp syncing. i have the original album and on the 2nd verse you can hear the people say and u hear a kiss sound effect JUST LIKE THE ORIGINAL. its ok he is a genious. even the flute is note for note. why paul would allow this is beyond belief? goplay the original and watch his lips.
Yes, the kiss is heard, but how do we know it wasn't Linda doing it on her mic? We don't see her during that part.
Now- the flute @ 0:45-- it's *possible* it's either from the original tape or it's being reproduced by the keyboard player on the right. Those things could make Any sound. Small nuances in Paul's voice here differ from the original.
i have perfect pitch since birth so i can tell notes flat sharp or if its an original recording. this one sounds original to me plus ive seen otheer versions of this songlive where he isnt lip syncing. hey its all for us to guess which is the fun of it. still a great recording regardless.
this version actually sounds like with a small mix of sounds which werent live. BUT the version of the timeline show is definately lip syncing. (its the 1st choice to see similar on the right top) this one is so close even for perfect pitch i cant be 100% sure but i think pauls voice is live. compared to the record version from then.
I'd *definitely* lean much more towards a live performance here. When he sings "leave behind a tragic world" @ :47, he definitely says it faster than on the original recording. On the album, he draws out the word "tragic" & it's noticeably shorter here.
Nobodys. I think they are BBC production staff bunged there to mime. Robbie Macintosh and Whippy Head (from average white band) should have been there but he hadn't assembled that band at the time. Chris Whitten is the king!
Paul is singing live over a canned instrument track. Done often because it's very difficult to get a good live mix over TV. Doesn't detract from Paul's genius, in any event. Keep 'em coming, Paul. You are da man!
The sound is just off a little bit from the video. It happens a lot. If you watch, you'll see that the announcer's words seem a little bit off at the end of the video, too. And, LOL @ the idea of Paul McCartney lip synching in a live performance. Wouldn't happen.
this is definitely the original backing track (all those stacked harmonies, the fake 'kiss', etc.), meaning they are play-synching, but it could be a mix without the vocals so that paul could sing it anew. the beatles did that with 'hey jude' for instance. but the beatles and paul solo made plenty of videos and tv appearances where they lipsynched while 'playing live'. so, "did happen" is the right response, i would guess?
ah, but he was even hotter 25 years before this was taken!...although its amazing how young he's always looked, like, he'd BARELY changed in that 25 years...
Wow!! I didn't even know Paul was performing during this period... and in true 80's fashion--a Pet Shop Boys looking backing band, a pointy headstock guitar and that slick edge to the sound... But, I liked it!!!
I do recognize the drummer from the Flowers In The Dirt period.
yeah! i noticed that too about these two songs. I wasnt crazy about em at first but i listened to them and they totally grew on me and now i love them!
I used to have this on video when i first got into Macca and the Beatles. It's from the Wogan show on the BBC to plut All the best.
At one point Wogan say's maybe that's you're pig-headedness Paul. Which leads to Maccas usual story of piping down for a few days before Ringo said 'come on produce it,man.' In those pre youtube. days you watched what bits of footage you could get over and over.
btw Why not check out Beatles superfan site Beatles number 9
Yeah, I'm not doubting that they were in front of an audience, but I think they probably did two or possibly three takes, and took the best camera shots and edited them together. If so, I'm sure they would have just played it back to back two or three times. I love Beatles, Paul, and Wings. I'm not putting them down in any way, but I know that this is not a truly live recording.
Actually if you listen the sax solo is different than on the original. And Paul's vocal is definitely live. I think in England the musicians union says on television you have to have a "live performance". Which is why you often hear pre-recorded backing tracks and a live vocal over them.
That's a Rickenbacker 4001S. Rickenbacker gave it to him back in 65. It was painted up during the late 60's and then Paul sent it back to Ric to get it refinished sometime in 1968. It's actually the first one that Ric ever made.
Lol wierd yellow bass? That bass is far superior in sound than the hofner. Beatles fans who only like Beatles music and say they hate their solo careers(Usually beatles fans don't even give their solo careers a chance) wouldn't know that that yellow bass the Rickenbacker was the bass he used when he was in Wings. So Wings fans know the Rickenbacker and Beatles fans know the Hofner.
Cool thanks for the info! Im fifteen and wasnt around back then and actually I do absolutely obsess over and love wings and all of the Beatles solo careers and most Beatles fans do.I dont know why you think people "hate their solo careers" Your right on one thing though, Ive been listening and the Richenbacker (that I now know about thanks to you) sounds a lot better than the hofner.
Then you'll enjoy knowing that Paul also played the Rickenbacker WITH the Beatles. As early as late-65. Usually just in the studio though, and it still had it's Fireglo - then custom paint job.
This IS live, not lip syncing. They simply played the backup voices from a recording to give the live song the same effect as the recorded one. Other than those recorded backup voices, everything you hear on this recording is indeed live.
Come on! Look at the first do do do, da da doot do do, after the first verse-he's not even near the mic and not mouthing half of it. And who's playing the bongos?
I've been a musician for 31 years, and I can spot the real thing. Don't get me wrong, Paul is in the top two of the greatest popstars of all-time, but this isn't live. Not to knock Paul, it probably wasn't his decision, but it was very difficult to get quality audio in a talk show studio back then.
bongos could go from keybord. Bass really stops(it's quiet, you can hear synth-grand piano instead; and yes, I know there's a difference between normal and Ric basses in sound). the only suspicious thing is Paul's vocal-not always close enough to the mic.
So-probable that they lip-synced, but if they did-quite well done.
I would say that it was pre-recorded before the audience was let it, posibly at another location. Then, two or three "live" perfomances" were filmed back to back infront of an audience, that way the best shots and multiple angles could be edited together for the "best" presentation.
I agree, it's top notch lip syncing, but not perfect. It probably wasn't Paul's choice to lip sync, but TV shows had limits to their acoustics, cameras, etc..
it was actually performed in front of live people not pre recorded becaus i have got the video tape of the wogan show and i had just catched paul mccartney singing it his lips did not sync at 41 seconds on me 1987 vid
That guy missplayed the solo! [idk what is the name of that instrument]

Everybody lip synced at times back then. It was the norm.

At 2:08 he stops playing all together.

Oops, scratch that. I meant at 3:08 he stops playing.

bongos could go from keybord.

It wasn't originally from "All the Best!" It was originally from "Venus and Mars", which, to this day, remains one of my favorite albums!
