So true. I even challenge certain players to race on the Expert track and they all decline(except this one time I was against 3 other players), and at the same time, they look at me like I'm crazy. I'm not crazy, I'm dead serious when I challenge other players to a race on the Expert track.
Man you make this fucking game look easy. I could never play it for shit, but always LOVED watching it. At $1 a play, this was too pricey for me to fail at, so I just watched others play it, but man you blow them ALL away.
You aren't kidding about the adrenaline rush, just watching this game again takes me back to those early 90's arcades, cheering the drivers on from the side. I played it a few times, but never even finished the first track. I then went back to playing Primal Rage. :)
@DevilMaster - While there isn't a 3DS port in the works, there is a port in the works for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 with 8-player online multiplayer. See for yourself: watch?v=6IpyXiMfWvI
This is gonna be so much fun. Really looking forward to it.
@Ace9921 I'm not. The PS3 and 360 version is exactly the same game, with exactly the same features, as the arcade version. I can already play the arcade version at home with the Model 2 emulator, so I don't need another copy of the same game. A stereoscopic version of this would've been different enough to make me want it.
I could NEVER figure out the arcade version of this game when I was young. I lost to a friend once in the bowling alley and TWICE in a sit-down cabinet (the game was inside a replica NASCAR stock car!) - using the Automatic machine!
I recently tried the game again on the Model2 emulator...and the '90s flashbacks caught up to me AGAIN (failing to finish in time)! I even tried to do the 4-1-4 shift trick, but it sometimes ends embarrassingly for me. Keep up the good work, SestrenNK. :)
Haha, the thing I like in your video is your comments, you can feel the real passionate guy :) BTW, you're playing pretty well, I've already played this game some times and I don't manage to get this far.
I loved this in the arcade back in the day. I've never actually seen anyone get 1st. That's some good driftin right there. Thanks for showing me what happens when you get 1st. I would've died without ever knowing, which would have been tragic.
@swrutra I have a hard time doing Expert simply because I'm using the same analog stick for braking/accelerating, and it wasn't necessary to brake on the first two courses. I normally do 4-1-3-4 throughout the video, though on the second to last turn on Expert I do 4-2-3-4, sometimes I get away with 4-3-4. Doesn't always work though.
For recording I used FRAPS, but used a frame-blending filter in After Effects so it ran more smoothly since YT doesn't support 60 fps videos any longer.
As for the industry, my field of study involves art, but ultimately I'm aiming to be a game designer or creative director. Growing up with games from this era, where games were fun, creative, innovative, immersive, and had unique art direction, today's games leave a really rotten taste in my mouth, and I want to do something about it. I consider myself a creative person who strives to do something others haven't, so I figured I'd pursue it. CONT
@SestrenNK CONT A lot of times I'll go to Dave & Busters just to observe others playing, and it amazes me how a game that's nearly 20 years old still gets people excited, screaming and hollering, while completely removing them from real life, something I want to help bring back to today's games outside of online games. There's definitely a lot of return to old school thanks to indie and Nintendo, but I want to combine the two. But really, a return to pure challenging fun and beauty to look at.
@SestrenNK You really have big ambitions... btw, my first console was N64 and ever since I followed Nintendo. You're right, Nintendo is a very traditional company. But, indeed, there are game genres that were never tried anymore, like turn-based rpg's, jet ski, etc. If you have that dream, go for it. But it's true that, nowadays, gaming is based on what sells and not how good the idea is.
@swrutra Which will certainly serve as an obstacle, for sure. But of course, "what sells" never remains consistent, and developers will be forced to do something different when things grow stale, which I feel is why indie and downloadable games are booming. I'd just rather have a hand at helping develop games that immerse players with a unique experience, make them want to come back for more, while not looking or feeling like everything else out there. But not going too far, for sure.
@Scourgeandmephiles93 Believe me, even when you've got the technique down it's no less easier to find yourself spinning off the track or into a full speed into a wall *points to self*. It definitely has quite a learning curve. Really depends on which gear you slide into and how hard you steer. I rarely ever brake in the video, but it's a must on Expert. Just keep practicing, it's definitely not impossible. :) I'd recommend practicing on the Advanced course though - more turns to try it on.
@SestrenNK Yeah. The expert course has that ridiculous turn in the end that is technically possible to do without braking. I've seen people like the Daytonaguru on Youtube do it. I also have a Dreamcast that would be ready to receive this game sometime.
The comments were funny beyond anything I have seen on youtube!!! Awesome game, awesome tracks, awesome control, and wicked awesome comments lol!!! ^_^
@mpyuri It was a lot more difficult than I expected it to be, it's like the game demands a completely flawless run on Beginner. In the arcade, now that I've got the shift technique down, I actually have a MUCH easier time getting higher positions on Advanced. Still can't do worth crap on Expert though :P
@garfieldandfriends1 I actually got first in Advanced in the arcade this last week, still got a ways to go in Beginner, and still can't do crap on Expert. Just narrowly finished the race in an emulator on the last one.
@ScrewAttackEurope I'm surprised YT didn't butcher it. I used a frame blending technique so the video wouldn't become choppy when down-converting from 60fps to 30fps, though if you pause it in certain areas some parts are blurry. Doesn't work on all videos unfortunately. I'm still mad YT suddenly dropped support for 60fps videos.
So I was at Dave & Buster's last night when games were half-off. After a full round of Virtua Cop 3 (now that the damn thing was fixed), I played on the Daytona 8 machine and finally beat Dinosaur Canyon with 5th place. Then I accidentally got into a game with a stupid couple who only got ahead by ramming other players against the wall. So much for fair game. They messed around on the last lap, I got ahead, and thanks to drift techniques they couldn't catch up and I kicked their ass. TAKE THAT!
@dacarfreak2000 I haven't, and I'm not really willing to play against others until I'm able to play the game where the gas and brake aren't on the same analog stick. :V
I loved this game back in the day! and that theme tune! always used to be stuck in my head, i always end up singing it lol.... there was hidden cheats for this too, time attack mode, different camera view, amongst others i can't remember now!
The "crass in turn 3" line is taken directly from the last race of the movie Days of Thunder. Which, coincidentally, takes place at the Daytona 500.

I remember this game... I played it once in arcade form. Fantastic racer, especially considering that this came out in 1994 when 2D gaming was still somewhat prevalent, and it still looks awesome today. And the music... Let's just say it is so awful that it's good. So good, in fact, that I would put this totally... rocking... soundtrack... on my Ipod if I had one. Nostalgia is awesome. :D
