Anyone know who did the voice on these "Letters In Space" clips? I've been unable to figure it out.
It seems like many of these old clips feature people who were or became famous... Joan Rivers/Gene Wilder in "Morphing Letters", Bill Cosby in "Curious Cat", Billy Crystal in "2 Train", Grace Slick in "Jazzy Spies", etc etc. It wouldn't surprise me to find that this was voiced by someone we are familiar with.
Anyone familiar with Ms. Nicky Trax - "Acid in the House" (1988)? It's on Youtube. The lyrics are mostly "there's acid in the house" over and over, but it's delivered in much the same emotionless drone as this chick's repeating "V".
Also, halfway through the song, you hear some of the same "trippy" sound effects. I've always wondered if this clip didn't influence that track.
Will at least one person watch both and tell me that I'm not just tripping myself?
really? I dont think the letter V had anything to do with cocaine or disco, I certainly knew nothing of them as a kid, and the letter V in space didn't scare me at all, I just recognized they took a little artistic license.
Wow, what a rush of memories. Does anyone have the SS animation clip of the letter X in Space? Almost like this, (young child's voice chanting, "X...X...X") but with a haunting guitar and flute melody in the background. I've never forgotten this clip since I was six in the mid-70's. Over the last 30 years, I still hear it in my head like a sad song. I would *love* to see this again - haven't been able to find it anywhere! Some childhood memories stay with you forever. Can anyone help? Thanks!
shit like this used to scare my very young ass and I often wonder who thought this shit was okay for youngsters...but then I remember it was a totally different world back then and people did cocaine and liked disco for a year or so sooooo...yeah but like now I love watching and remembering and feeling a nanosecond worth of that actual time...Its a rush! I'm glad I was alive to catch the end of such great creative nonsense...born in Las Vegas, NV. 1974 thanx!
It's interesting how some of the older Sesame Street clips had such an eerie subtext about them. The sounds and visuals in this "V" clip is so sparse and minimalist. You feel all alone in deep space, save for this letter V, which is apparently being willed across the cosmos by some enigmatic, God-like entity with a little girl's voice.
I'm 37, but remember this like it was yesterday. While other kids laughed at the sound of the V landing on the moon, I remained transfixed in thought....the lower part of that V was a very sharp point, and I thought it would stab the moon. Ouch!
this is funny for me, cuz according to dad after watching sesame street (it musta had this segment or something), i went out to my old shed, saw the lock on it with a big "v" for victor, and i was shouting, "V! V! V! V! V!" and bashing it on the shed door.
omg this used to scare the crap out of me especially at the time when she science fiction show V was popular because I was scared to death of that show
Again and again I am shocked to watch another vintage SS video such as this- something that has been buried deep within my mind for 25 years comes immediately back to the surface, an odd feeling as my mind simultaneously feels the thoughts I had as a child and then also my new perspective as an adult. I never would have thought of this again until watching it here and every second is like a bizarre flashback of another lifetime.
Ditto.... Dang! Spent nearly an hour watching old Sesame Street clips on YouTube! Talk about dusting out old emotions/feelings I remember as a child. More power to YouTube. Thanks iseven for posting!
Of course this is creepy - the girl just repeats "v" over and over as though possessed and/or drugged, her voice is drenched in echo, as though she's a phantom, and the tympani when the V lands connotes finality, as in "game over."
The same animator did a "Z" cartoon (available here) and an "M" cartoon (not uploaded so far!) along the same lines. Makes me wonder why he didn't cover the whole alphabet eventually...

From the looks and sound effects,i'm almost certain that this was done by
Filmation Associates-who originally did the BATMAN and SUPERMAN
cartoons for CBS,,and also contributed to SESAME STREET,when it first
aired in 1969.

This cartoon scared me only because I was afraid of the letter V and the psychodelic one minute cartoon from SS's first season, 1969-70.
