Funny, I read it is because they didn't want to pay them. The Irish were treated worse than slaves. In fact, they were the first slaves in America and the West Indies. The potato famine was really the Irish Holocaust. England suffered the same blight but they chose to come to Ireland and steal all the food and livestock and refused to help the starving Irish.
I've only just read about Duffy's Cut. What I've read, it wasn't discrimination, it was an outbreak of cholera! They 'healthy people' apparently were killed by vigilantes when they tried to leave, out of a desperate fear that the cholera would be spread somehow
Why upload this and an ICP (Immigration Control Platform, not Insane Clown Posse- although they're not far off) Party Broadcast? This song is about the plight of working class immigrants no?
Fair play to Christy Moore, always stood up for the right people be they in Rossport, Zurich, Palestine, Belfast, Dublin, El Salvador or trapped in London living as immigrants.
Eastern European workers share much of what Irish people went through. I am pro equal rights for non nationals especially in the work place. This doesn't mean i agree with reckless immigration policies which in my opinion we have now. Also i don't conform to the negative stereotype of a nationalist concerned with immigration. As for the ICP vid i didn't upload it!
Its sad because many Irish left innocent little rural areas where everybody new everybody and were exposed to exploitation and tragedies like this song.
