  • thanx.

  • Thanks for the info.onelove.

  • did ur locks get 2 a point where it seem they stop growing??

  • Hey thnx for the tips.. I actually don't have dreads, I want to.. But you know, people sayin stuff that its gonna smell bad, should take care of it etc etc.. So I just wanted to ask you hows it feel to have dreads? Cuz I really wanna do it you know? So I'm basicly just asking.. Cuz I think its worth it

  • Check out a 22'inch crinkle dread cap on dreadcap.com

  • u kinda look like goapele. =)

    very pretty.

  • @shasanni I used to be in love with Goapele

  • Girl u is FIIIINNNNE!!!!!!!

    And ur dreads r sexy.

  • I'm a runner and I wondered if you knew what more athletic types (NBA, NFL, etc.) do to their hair when they are constantly sweating and (presumably) washing it all the time. I've had my locs for 7 years now and I'm struggling with all this southern summer heat and sweaty smelling hair. (I'm not "balling" like the jocks, though. They probably have personal loc-ticians on retainer--lol) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Did you use Lottabody on your hair when it was wet or dry?

  • what can I use to keep my loc;s from being dry and stiff?

  • Shawnta, why not interloc instead of using loc gels? It's less messy and allows you longer wear between retightening.

  • I have locz n everything else is locked up..but the top part is having a difficult time locking bcuz it's so curly and soft..any advise???

  • if any one wanna do my dreads for free hit mehh up for location ..

  • i mix together beeswax, prostyle gel, and organic lock and twist gel. plus it's easier for me to twist and stay when my hair is damp.

  • I use Fructis Length & Strength shampoo.

    It really does help breakage.

I use leave in Keratin sprays like Aphogee which I buy @ Sally's Beauty Supply.

I also use olive or jojoba oils in my hair with essential oil that is good for hair, like lavender, rosemary and basil.

  • i miss my dreads :(...my girl thinks i should redo them when my hair grows back...

  • Nice video. You were very honest on all the products you have tried. Thank you!

    Blessings,

    Cinnamonslices

  • nice dreads and ur beautiful

  • how often do you use your olive oil?

  • because people start to look at your locks like ----> "What is that?".

  • Wow. Four months and they are still coming out? No. You need to go someplace else. For the first couple of months, use a scalp clenser. Do this until your locs can be fully saturated with water without coming down. You're absolutly right. Your hair can't loc if you're starting with a fresh fro everytime you get a retwist. I'm at 4 months now, and I can wash & condition with no problems. Good luck with everything.

  • I SWEAR you have the BEST hair care ideas! using the lotta body and the styling gum in the front is THE BEST!!! It takes me 2 HRS!!! to twist my hair and its so annoying! Thanks can't wait til you join the loc family again :)

  • well i gotta question. in a little less than a year from now ima get dreadlocks and i want them to b similar to kia shine's cuz his shits r fuckin ill and they happen 2 b liek rele thin. is palm rollin the only way to keep them thin or would i have to retwist them at the root?

  • Are you white? well if you want small dreadlocks you should just twist up small sections of your hair thats how i have small dreads if your dreads were fat from the start youll just have to start over

  • uh naw im black and hispanic. i am gonna get skinny dreads but i was just wonderin whether a certain method of mantience like palm rollin or retwistin would affect the size of em either makin them fatter or skinnier....if ur sure they will remain at the same thickness as they r put in then i guess it wouldnt b much of a concern to me...

  • I don't know. I was told that, while the size of your parts is the main determining factor in how thick your locs get, palm rolling does make them a bit skinnier than the would be if you just twisted the roots. It condenses them more.

  • how do i dread my hair if im white?

  • ask white people that have dreads.....

  • you do it just the way blacks do it... but with a little more emphasis.

  • it probably works the same look at the metal band KORN or the presenter of pulp sport (New Zealand TV show)

  • you should try knotty boy ( that site is made for white ppl with locs )

  • do you sit under the hair dryer

  • Your locks have beautiful texture. Thanks for the infomation bc I still have babies and it has been an uphill battle!

  • shaunta ( excuse my spelling of your name) but you have a great personality i like it :) your chill haha nice dreds

  • u sexy

  • I have the meshing problem after washing too. I find it really annoying sometimes as after i wash my hair i can see my parts clearly and wrap my head to soak up the water. Then when i go to re-twist theyve knotted up within a matter of minutes. This seems to happen very much more with soft, loose curl hair which also takes longer to loc. I have an extremley sensitive scalp which makes this process doubly painful but i would'nt change it for the world, lol

  • i keep on hearing all kindsa shit about how to make dreads! some people say you shouldn't use conditioner, some people say they do it in several days, others say it takes months, shit! i wanna get'em but i dunno whether to get it done by a black hairdresser or do it myself

  • The less you do the better. I use 100% natural shea butter to twist my new growth and coconut oil to moisturize both my locs and scalp once or twice a week. Oh, and think you should do your locs yourself, it takes patience, but within a few month, you should see your locs forming. It took me three months to start mine.GOOD LUCK!!

  • How long have you been using these products on your locs and have you experienced any problems?

  • I've been using the shea butter since mid 2007. I just started the coconut oil about a month ago. Thus far I've had absolutely no problem with either one. Another one is fresh aloe vera. I just touched up my new growth with it. I grow my own aloe, so I have easy access.

  • I have a friend that is going to Ghana soon and wants to bring me some pure Shea butter and market it for him. I also have a huge aloe plant given to me as a gift and i wanted some tips on how to use it raw. Can you please give some ideas especially with hair? I know its a good substance but not sure how to use. Please feel free to pass by my page with a response. Ta...

  • y dos the hairdresser have to be black?

  • nah i didn't mean a hairdresser who's black, i meant like a hairdresser who specialises in black hairdressing eg. dreadlocks, cornrows etc. :-)

  • Ok my sista I have a question for you. I just got my locks done had them in for 1 week and 2 days now myu hair was 2 in. long short when I got the coil twist. The ones in the back are coming out a lil, what would you recommend me doing? Nice hair.

  • u very goodlooking natural black sisster

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • seems like the locs with the most minimal care looks the best. the girls that use all the products have locks that look like they need all that product. when people use just shampoo and maybe a little oil, the locks look magnificent! like yours!

  • I just saw this vid and it helped greatly w narrowing my choices on wut to use. But if u could plz help me w some ?s for my new locs(4 months), I would greatly appreciate it. God bless

  • I enjoy your videos. You are very informative. Do you know anything about cactus oil as a moisturizing agent. also when you sleep do you tie your hair up or just leave them loose?

  • your very beautiful

  • Hi! i want to get some locks , the same size as yours.....i wonder when i divide the hair in to squares to then start backcombing,, how big should the square be? i have really straight hair no curls or nothing maybe it wont work for me to have so small or will it?

  • Damn, you're fine.

  • i wanted to start my locs with two strand twists cause my friends did and dey said it was easy but i don't actually know how to start them with the twists so could you help me!!!+=)

  • It's simple. You leave the twists in your head, and when your hair starts to get fuzzy you start twisting it, the twist as a whole. It forms a dread.

  • do u interlock u hair sometime?

  • Thanks so much for this! JUST started my locs with 2 strand twists...I plan on maintaining them on my own...so this vlog really helped a lot. Your locs are absolutely GORGEOUS.

  • My sound doesn't work but oh well your sexy..

  • have you ever used pipe cleaners to curl your locs.

  • I have a question for you. What did u put in your head before you had locs? I have "Doo Gro Growth Lotion" is that good? I just wanna have healthly hair before i loc it, ya know. Any advice?

  • Thanks Shawnta715 for all of your love and positive energy. I have been natural for 11 years now and I started my locs in March of 08. Its been a journey of patience but they are coming along beautifully. Before my locs, I used the honey with olive oil pre-treatment as my conditioner on my natural hair before shampooing and I substituted the olive oil for almond oil. This worked great with lots of moisture too!!! However, i would like to know if I could use honey on my locs as a conditioner?

  • Thanx for posting this. I have had my locs for a year today, I just got them maintained a few hours ago. I am always so worried about them, I have a friend who has GORGEOUS locs, she is the famous YouTube teacher by the way, and I want mine to be great like hers

  • you have beautiful locks.

  • WOW YOU HAVE BEAUTIFUL LOCKS

  • Lotta body?? Haven't heard of that one yet...

  • like this vid and your really cute!! keep doing that what you do, it's working like whoa.

  • I really like this vid everytime i watch it i learn something new lol i like ya locs i've had mine for 9 months good look check out my loc vids rate commetn sub. and just let me know how they look to you much luv D

  • i have a question will dread work for me too since my hair is wavey and fine and natural???

  • Great video, you say less is more and I think that is one of the most important things with locks especially if you have very coarse hair

  • I've been watching your videos for sometime. I really like how your locs look and how you maintain them. How old are they in this video?

  • It's in the description box.

  • Your videos have been very informative. Thanks for taking the time to post. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for someone to start my Locs in Baltimore! Thanks!

  • thanks for the info.

  • i got dreadlocks also..i have been growin them a year now..its a ok length but i wanna kknow is it anywayz i can get them to grow faster, i take good care of them i get them done once a month an i get them done professionally, i just want to know is it a product or a method i can use as far as washing routine i can use to make them grow faster, thanks

  • Hey Shawnta. Great video. I wanted to know what kind of hair texture do you have. I am considering getting locks and I have very soft hair. I'm thinking yours is the same texture. Does this mean my hair would take a long time to lock?

  • so um yeah.......I just fell in love with you over this video...you're simply beautiful, I bet you're a good mommy and it's clear you're a good woman.

I wonder if you get n2 poetry at all, If so, I'd like 2 hear what you have 2 say.

    PEACE

  • with dreads can u use any kind of shampoo?

  • u should try to use a clarifying shampoo. something that cleanses the hair without leaving residue, because that can clog hair follicles, slowing growth, and the buildup on the lock itself makes it hard for the hair to lock up.

  • thanks for the tutorials,, stay blessed. i'm growing mine now, i could use tips. keep me posted.

  • i like to wash my hair every two weeks like you but sometimes i wait a few days like you said depends on how busy I am. im going to try to use the lotta body im open to anything that works but in TX not many ppl have locs so when i say locs they look at me crazy.I get a lot of funny looks and reactions.i have a question have you tried NATURALS BLESSING i like it the consistence is better then the other products. Its really water based and not as thick as some of the other plus it has good hold.

  • damn you're cute....wanna go out sumtime ?

  • haha, i was thinking the same thing.

  • how much lottabody do u use? thanks for the tips btw.

  • I have a spray bottle of water that I think is probably 8-10 oz and about a third is lotta body.

  • Hey i got my locks yesterday and all i kept thinking about was what you said in one of your past video's about making sure your locktician is mindful of the way they part your hair during installation..thanks....

  • I completely agree. I'm at a stage now where my dreds are merging into one another. I don't know what to do about it and I want to make sure that they don't mat and the parts stay as a defined as possible. Help!!

  • i enjoyed looking at your video. I am still thinking of locking and this video is very helpful :)

  • so the mango stuff is not good for your hair? what all do you use?

  • I use the mongo stuff and i love it

  • pretty only girl so far that has caught my eye wit dreads stay up beautiful

  • Hey I was just wondering, does the lottabody flake after you use it and do you just put it on the new growth or the whole loc? Also do you sit under the dryer or do you just wait for the lotion to air dry?

  • thanks to you i will be able to better care for my dreads, they will be 2 years old in july and they comein along good but thats only because my cousin has been takein care of em and he hasnt been around so now i gota take care of them myself. thanks for the info very helpfull

  • When you say " you put olive oil on every thing " what type of olive oil and what else do you use it for

  • It is the regular extra virgin olive oil you can get a the grocery store. I put olive oil on my face, body and hair. I'm trying out coconut oil now as well which also has the ability to go everywhere

  • wow, so i dont really have to go out and buy all these jamaican products that i have been getting? I have extra virgin olive oil in the cabinet girl! Serious? I just may have to try that. one question though...i started my locs in November and i added synthetic hair to it b/c i didnt want to start with the short hair thing. So, will this work for me or should i stick with the products b/c of the fake hair? I want to try and get some human hair ,but what do you think of this approach?keep it shor

  • I don't feel you need to use a bunch of stuff just because you have the synthetic hair in there. Just make sure you have a good shampoo that gets out any residue of products. Does the synthetic hair unravel when you wash, or do you have to palm roll the synthetic hair too? If so you may still need a gel but I would try to find a light water based one.

  • yeah i use the mango stuff and it causes a lot of build up. my husband had to squeeze each one indiviually to get the goo out of it. yuck! its all clean now, but they do not unravel when i wash them but they are frizzy going along the ends and i dont know what to do about that. I just roll at the roots and clip them and thats it. Can I roll this fake hair to get the frizz off? I need some help! lol Thanks for the response. oh i dont know how to upload a video. So i have to go figure that out.

  • you are so cute, thanks for the info!!

  • avocado oil works well. Spray once or twice a week. It smells good, moisturizes and give a beautiful sheen.

  • My scalp gets so dry, what can I do between washing to moisturize?

  • I've heard about people using olive oil.

  • just regular olive oil? like you buy for cooking? do you mix it with EO"S to make it smell good? my locs are so dry with all the coloring i do. i need to find a good moisturizer!

  • you can use extra virgin olive oil for you hair and your skin. You can also use unrefined (raw) shea butter.

  • Hey Shawnta,

How do you keep your hair so neat? I've had my locks for 8 months and I interlock, but I have problems with snagging and loose ends, even though I use a silk scarf at night. Any suggestions?

  • Hey, I have a problem. I've been growing my locs for about a year now and the roots of maybe 2-4 of them are extremely thin. Like the ends are thick like the rest and were fine a while back, but the roots now are maybe 1/3 the size if that. do you know how I can maybe add some hair from other dreads or something to thicken them back up???

  • I would combine the thin locs with a loc beside it, and since the ends look fine I would leave them as "two headed dragons". What you would do is loop the thin loc through the new growth of the loc beside it. When you retwist you retwist the newly made loc and eventually they will mesh together at the root. Down the line you can decide to keep them that way, cut off one of the locs, or twist them to the end and secure them with hair yearn until they loc together.

  • If your hair is shorter in the back and your hair is longer in the back would I have to cut the front part down to match the back or can I just leave it like it is and lock my hair? Thank you

  • My hair was an uneven mess when I started to be honest. It looked fine in twists and puffs, but the one and only time I straightened it, everyone was like "your gonna have to cut your hair because it is so uneven" so I locked it instead :) That wasn't the only reasoned I locked it but to me it really doesn't matter because it is common for one part of your hair to grow at a different rate then the other. If twists look fine then the locks will look fine.

  • Where can I find Lotta Body?

I just washed my hair, and realize I have nothing to hold the twist, LMAO!!!

  • Oh man. Any beauty supply store or even walmart. Do you have a clear gel? You could mixed that with water too if you don't want to go out.

  • Girl, God musbe forget to put shame in me. Cuz I went to Walmart with my hair just so!

I was contemplating buying LA something clear gel. It didn't have alcohol in it, or Garnier high shine wax which doesn't have beeswax. But then I saw the Lottabody! So I grabbed that.

    Thanks for the help :D

  • you have a pretty face... Nice locks.

  • Your story sounds like mine.. I'm a 1 yr. neo and I've tried EVERYTHING! haha Even Beeswax.. I've used any and every shampoo.. Suave is my ish! Haha I also use MANE 'N TAIL and body shampoo and conditioner.. You should try it!

  • I think I will I need some more shampoo instead of stealing the babies! LOL

  • Haha.. You gotta do what you gotta do sista! Haha Sometimes I use whatever's around the house too.. You seem cool! Stay up family!

  • thanks alot shawnta,i guess the point is to make sure the products are very light.

  • This was very interesting. I tried olive oil for my hair but I didn't like it.

  • Ha ha, the life of the loc. I swear, I've tried EVERYTHING too. I'm guilty of beeswax till my loctician looked like she was gonna keel over tho...

But I'm glad somebody else's story&regimen is quite similar to mine :)

  • Thank you! This relly helps alot! I usually use the Pantene for black hair but I will look into the olive oil (would you recommend extra virgin olive oil?) My locs are going on 6 years old and I am, at times, so tempted to cut them off because I hardly know what to do with them LOL!! Faved so I can keep coming back to it!! Thanks again!!

  • i never would've thought of lottabody for retwisting but i can definitely see it saving a ton of time. great suggestion

  • i liked how your hair looked in this video you think you could do a tutorial on that style? Thanks for sharing your regimen i enjoyed watching

  • Done! <3

  • loc sista to the rescue again lol, ive got the HUGE tube of organic root stimulator loc n twist creme and also half empty jars of Jamaican Mango n Lime products. i havent used lottabody since the relaxer days :-x lol great suggestion thanks :)
