  • I love it so much. Praise the LORD!

  • I really do appreciate this song. I am a Roman Catholic, Proud Canadian, and proud of our war dead. A beautiful song. Good Bless Canada and God Save the Queen.

  • Very nice and soothing

  • I'm atheist, and I approve of this song. Enough arguing over religion and enjoy the bloody music.

  • We're playing this song in band... it sounds so sad but it's beautiful<3

  • To all those believers out there: Don't be concerned about the atheists' FAILURE to believe in God, His just judgments, or Hell. When (s)he arrives in Hell, (s)he'll believe in them all.

  • Do grow up! I assume you are a Catholic, versed in superstition and fear. You have the wrong God. Jesus was Jewish, born and died. There is no hell or heavon, only the ones we create here on earth. I am an Atheist, assured of the truth, well read of all religions. This is all we have.

  • fell in love with this song when i heard it on doctor who (: thanks for posting! beautiful voices this choir has got.

  • 3:30 Beautifull

  • Have you any actions in this choir ? Conductor or organist, singer ? But listener ?

  • @brci01 No, nothing.

  • Amazing organ pedals, where it was recording ?

  • @brci01 Recorded in St Paul's Cathedral, London 2003

  • No more brothers wars! Let us remember the heroic dead of all Europe, the senseless waste of generations of British and German youth slaughtered in the name of vested interest and international finance. Europe A Nation!

  • Now I shall enjoy a good night´s sleep! Thank you most heartily!

  • @rengris We can keep the art and culture that religion has inspired without keeping the ridiculous beliefs and practices. I don't know how you can be filled with "sorrow" by a bunch of stupid youtube comments. If that's what makes you sorrowful, then you need to prioritize.

  • @AsSomedayItMayHappen It's just those 'ridiculous beliefs and practices' as you describe them--do you mean The Apostles' Creed material etc?--that have inspired the art/culture. The very first line of this hymn comes from the story of two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24) who are joined by the RISEN Jesus Christ. But they didn't recognise him until they persuaded him to 'abide' stay with them and have a meal. During that meal suddenly they realised who he was.

  • @riian1946 Yes. I agree the bible is a beautiful collection of fictional stories. There's nothing wrong with that.

  • @AsSomedayItMayHappen Well, not at all. I happen to believe they are not fictions but true accounts of the early disciples meeting with a Risen Saviour. Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression or were you just trying to bait me!!

  • Soon, God will abide with us (at least with those who welcome Him, and His principles of life). Come Lord Jesus! (the final words of the Bible). The gentle, meek, forgiving, generous, ethical, holy, of integrity, honest, compassionate, patient, loving, faithful, in other words those like God shall get to live with God. Those who prefer alternatives, will be with the alternate "god", the fallen one, the deceiver, in a world filled with the exact opposites of God's character. Your choice.

  • That is why God created music in order for us to worship him and tender our hearts towards his word in the Bible

  • This song was written to commemorate Britain and Canada for the war dead of World War I.

This is my most favourite hymn. I go to a Anglican English school in Canada (even though I am a Catholic) that has cadets. The Chapel was made to commemorate the students who went to fight WWI and WWII. On November 11th, This song is played. It makes me proud to be Canadian.

God Bless Canada, and God Save the Queen.

  • im not a christian even tho raised as one! but there is something about this hymn that makes me well up inside, with emotion so powerful i cant explain it! dont ask me if its the lyrics or the music but i feel happy when it plays and somehow i forget about how horrible this world can be. I feel at peace. Peace and love to all xxx

  • Finally! found this song i was looking for this song from A Bridge To Far. i love this song!

  • Exquisitely beautiful. God is near...

  • Hymn after is called Holy, holy, holy by Franz Schubert!!! The original is heilig, heilig, helig!

  • hermoso

  • @rengris Sure enough. I just came here for the music, but I have to ask, since religion has made "generalising and slandering" and every other type of judgment (not to mention punishment...) its business for thousands of years, why are the religions themselves above the same treatment?

  • @nauort23 The punishments had nothing to do with God. It had to do with man. I am not very religious, but I do pray everyday. As a Catholic, My religion was responsible for the deaths of many people. This was not Gods will, this was mans will.

  • @Alex911TheCanadian I didn't say it was God's will. I said it was the business of the religion.

  • What is that hymn that follows from Abide with Me? (after the pause). It is so silencing to the soul and makes mine bow to Creator God ..

    I can't have enough of it ...

Thank you so much for sharing this...

  • @revelations21v6 The second selection is the second movement of Franz Schubert's "Deutsche Messe" (DV827), entitled "Heilig, heilig, heilig." And this is an extraordinary performance of it.

  • I cannot quite get the opening words of the piece after Abide with me.

  • @Tidespring73 Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;

The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.

When other helpers fail and comforts flee,

Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

    Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;

    Earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away;

    Change and decay in all around I see;

O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

  • CHURCH OF ENGLAND RESPECTS EVERYONES VIEWS THOSE THAT DONT SHOULD NOT HIDE BEHIND RELIGION TO PURSUE THEIR SICKNESS

  • L played this hymn at my mothers funeral in 1990 and it still has a very close feeling for me with my mother. I am 71 and still have a feeling for her

    Colin Burows

  • This was the opening hymn for my LDS (mormon) baptism :)

  • peace n love people, enjoy your lives, be kind, remember those who taught you, and praise be to God. May we have peace in our time and unity, worldwide. xx

  • This hymn,'Abide With Me' and Schubert's 'Ave Maria' are my two favorite. Every time I hear them it stirs up my soul and they move me to tears. The way to play them is on a pipe organ.

  • Lord god help me to overcome from this troubles, lord only u can help...

  • RIP all you who lost your life in Norway this weekend:-((((

  • Fantastisch!

  • @treblechoir99 Do you happen to have the lyrics to the second song "Sanctus"?

  • This is so beautiful! Just perfect!

  • As an atheist, I thank religion for it's part in the founding of music.

  • @MrNarrative Music is the only language in heaven.

  • @Nonie46 If that's your philosophy, then all power to you.

  • @MrNarrative You are classy.

  • Regardless of religious beliefs, this is a beautiful piece of music. Coupled with some beautiful images!

  • Oh God help is through the darkness of this world. The evil is unbearable!

  • this was my marchingband warmup song. i love this.

  • This song fills me with sadness and happiness at teh same time. I think of my family who are not here physically but here in in mind and and heart. Dad, Aunty ann and all my family hoping I do well in Somerset

  • "It is not one man nor a million, but the spirit of liberty that must be preserved. The waves which dash upon the shore are, one by one, broken, but the ocean conquers nevertheless. It overwhelms the Armada, it wears out the rock. In like manner, whatever the struggle of individuals, the great cause will gather strength"

  • Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;

The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.

When other helpers fail and comforts flee,

Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

    Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;

    Earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away;

    Change and decay in all around I see;

O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

  • @oldgattonian2 Thank you, very appreciat.

  • Thanks treblechoir99, it gave me strength when I needed it. And probably will again.

  • @brendanECS ce sont ces moments de répit que nous avons besoin, pour ceux qui veuillent bien se laisser toucher. Merci.

  • @oldgattonian2 when i listion the melodios music and the mercyful words i love jesus who loved me unconditionaly and without change.constancian.

  • Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word,

But as Thou dwell'st with Thy disciples, Lord,

    Familiar, condescending, patient, free.

Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.

Come not in terrors, as the King of kings,

    But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings;

Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea.

Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me.

  • @oldgattonian2 Such moving words! I once wrote an acrostic to this hymn - spelling the three easiest words to say, the three hardest to mean.

If only Man could learn to grow in love,

Longing to do the will of God above,

Oil would be poured on waters tossed with pride -

Vanquishing greed and casting fear aside.

Endless is life if love is at is core,

Yet Christ's commandment man and child ignore.

Only through Grace may Heaven on Earth be found

Under the gaze of God with friends around

  • @univocalic May I set your words to music, my friend?

  • Thou on my head in early youth didst smile,

And though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,

Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee.

On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour.

What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?

Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?

Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

  • fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;

Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.

Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?

I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

    Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;

Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.

    Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;

In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

  • Thankyou for sharing this, God bless.

  • @C1Astra You're very welcome.

  • excellent

  • Bellissimo canto.

  • indeed william henry monk was one of god's gifts to us his unworthy servants.

  • I wish you added lyrics or subtitles to this beautiful song.

  • Sang this only yesterday at my Grandma's funeral........Rest in peace Gran.

  • The old photos on this video are of the choir at Gloucester Cathedral. If anyone has any information about the date they were taken please make contact. I am the secretary of the old choristers association there. S Power, 12, College Green, Gloucester GL1 2LX.

  • One of those hymns you feel must have been handed down by God Himself. What year was this recording? Too beautiful.

  • @notyobs In 2003

  • im an athiest and i do enjoy this song, very peacful.

  • @rengris That doesn't sound strange because it is absoluetly true. The enemies of Christendom who happen to staff academia have altered history to fit their agenda. Marxist atheism is their religion. Truth is irrelevant.

  • @bitterclinger100 You're an imbecile.

  • @cook119 Is that all you got? You're the effing imbecile.

  • @rengris: continued, "Consequently, methodical research in all branches of knowledge, provided it is carried out in a truly scientific manner and does not override moral laws, can never conflict with the faith, because the things of the world and the things of faith derive from the same God. The humble and persevering investigator of the secrets of nature is being led, as it were, by the hand of God in spite of himself, for it is God, the conserver of all things, who made them what they are."

  • @rengris From the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church, paragraph 159, on Faith and science: "Though faith is above reason, there can never be any real discrepancy between faith and reason. Since the same God who reveals mysteries and infuses faith has bestowed the light of reason on the human mind, God cannot deny himself, nor can truth ever contradict truth."

  • One of the reasons im looking forward to the FA Cup final :)

  • A world that has, if anything, become colder and more hungry for spiritual absolution still produces things of beauty like this. I tend to keep my distance from mythology, mysticism and the dogma of mankind. Still, I am comforted by the yearning and assurance this music brings. It is testament to the uplifting side of man's search for a deeper meaning and enduring peace that an other-worldly place could offer, protected and comforted by a loving creator.

    One cannot listen in hatred.

  • @rengris science?

  • Each time I listen to this, I want to cry.

  • i couldnt remeber this song but i knew wht i was looking for then suddenly it came to me. thank you God

  • Nice listening to this piece... :-)

    Thanks!

  • I find the idea of a theistic God unhelpful, but that does not stop me from appreciating beautiful words and music!

  • @Stepan0306 Do you mean wrong? And if so argue your case. Abide with me, the words of some of Jesus' disciples who were talking with the risen Lord and didn't know it, inspired this writer of these lyrics to pen these marvellous words. However, I do realise that beauty can be appreciated where-ever it is found. Perhaps though the beauty is there to draw you to the God of beautiful.

  • Yes I do understand what it takes to have faith, fear of death and the need to believe in something bigger than you because it makes things simpler.

You need the fear of hell and the promise of heaven looming over you to do good instead of just doing it because its right.

'Those who do good out of fear and haltingly have no moral virtue.'

  • I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (April 10, Lent 5), we sang this as the closing hymn. It is #629 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.

  • Abide With Me is one of my favourite hymns, and the Sanctus in this is sung to my favourite bit of Schubert.

Peaceful, quiet and peaceful, and I love it.

  • I know exactly what it proclaims, and as I said before its a shame that its a religious tune.

So much human effort has been put into these silly fairy tales, at least we have some decent melodies from that mess.

  • @Keirodious It's a shame that you are a disrespectful kid who does not understand what it takes to have faith.

You're probably athiest, am I right?

  • @IakFox, There are NO athiest's on a sinking ship so that 21 year old punk knows shit!

  • Amazing how some people can hear this hymn and have no clue as to what it proclaims. 'Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes', Can it be any clearer. This is one of the greatest expressions of the hope of the faith.Remove the 'religious crap' as one ignorant fool put it, and you deprive the words of all meaning.

  • @ss3cleric AMEN bro

  • I've always loved this song its brilliant, shame about the religious crap attached to it.

  • @Keirodious no, it's not attached to it. The hymn is an expression of that 'religious crap' as you so indelicately put it.

  • Everytime I hear this song, it reminds me that as humans we're still God's favorite and His love to us will not be shaken. Thanks for posting.

  • this song penetrates the marrow and goes straight to the soul!

  • for the pigeon r.i.p.

  • I HAVE TO LEARN THIS IN CHOIR!

I DO NOT BELIEVE THEY CAN SING THOSE LONG PHRASES WITHOUT BREATHING IN THE MIDDLE OF THEM!

    the choir certainly can't!

  • You don't here anything like this from Islam, or Buddhism.

  • Two glorious pieces of music! and a beautiful medly they make! I remeber in choirs having to sing both of these songs, The Sanctus especially, leaves you in such awe. You feel as if literally, you have been ushered into the very prensence of God.

  • When I was a little kid at school, we had to learn this song in the Dutch translation. From the very first moment I heard the melody it touched my heart and soul, and it still does, maybe even more than on that day.

  • @Christo47734 Appreciat for you comment and experience with this Hymn

  • @Christo47734 I'm Flemish - what's the hymn called in Dutch?

  • @Nerweniel : This song is called in Dutch: "Blijf bij mij, Heer".

  • this beautiful hymn reminds me of my dad who was in the RAF in the war. it's so poignant and the words are wonderful. Thank you for this beautiful version of it. God bless.

  • I selected this as the last hymn at my Father's funeral service 2 weeks ago - the final departure of another of the remaining RAF 'few' - some may think it 'hackneyed' but the words are as relevent to life (and death) now as they were the day they were written : "Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if thou abide with me"

  • my father was buried to this in 82, never went to his funeral as i wasnt allowed to see the carnage the IRA did to him, but this song grips and holds me everytime i hear it.

  • I'm an atheist but this music is almost worth going back to church every Sunday for.

  • @esserjk ditto!

  • Beautiful.

  • How heavenly. Lord, always abide with me. Lord, abide with this troubled world of ours. "Domini dirige Nos."

  • This song is very nice....thank you for uploading.

  • I never tire of this hymn, it is truly eternal

  • Touching photo at 4:34.

  • English choirs know how to sing!!! Beautiful

  • 4 people disliked this?!! What is going on?

  • You may be right, although I can't for the life of me think what - except they knock out of few nice hymns. The music interests me, as for the rest :-(

  • loubie lou baby, dont forget i want this played at my funeral its here now so you dont forget.love you love me.

  • This is the one that puts me at peace. I can hear this every day. Just love it.

  • very nice...i like it...

  • Beautiful... :)

  • Lovely hymn, very emotive. I'm not a Christian, Muslim nor do I belong to any other brand of religion - but after reading the comments posted here, the best thing that could happen is the annihilation of ALL of this religious madness. It has been responsible for more misery, death and destruction than anything else on the planet since the year dot. Why can't we just 'live and let live'??

  • @qantasCapt Christianity has been responsible for a great deal of good also.

  • This hymn is very touching, thanks for sharing.

  • @ulpain You're very welcome.

  • very nice...

  • God, but i love this land!

  • I want this played at my funeral - some day!!

  • "Help of the helpless O abide with me"

Lyrics in this song are so deep

  • The Schubert rendition is particularly fine---the unexpected softness of the singing is actually more effective than if it had been sung loudly. A performance of luminous power. Other performers, take note of this.

  • Not that I am ready, but I would like it to be sung at my passing.

Just a memory from a Rugby League Cup Final in the Seventies.

  • For the last 100 years this has been sung at every family funeral. This is a beautiful version, cheers for posting.

  • Beautiful, the Sanctus following Abide with Me is so appropriate. Thanks a lot for posting. Great pictures too. This is now in my favourites list. Thanks again.

  • Its the RL final hymn

I cant hear it without seeing my Grandad belting it out

I played Rugby all my life,I cry every time I hear this

    Beautiful.

  • @riversider1234 : Well that's good old Britain for you !

  • Beautiful.

  • This hymn and its musical setting are so powerful, yet so incredibly tender and comforting, and this is truly a lovely performance. Surely "Abide with Me" is one of the most beautiful examples of how one should never underestimate something simple.

  • This beautiful hymn was introduced to me in a new and passionate way by the love of my life: Gabriela.

  • This beautiful hymn was introduced to me in a new and passionate way by the love of my life: Gabriela.

  • This beautiful hymn was introduced to me in a new and passionate way by the love of my life: Gabriela.

  • @jonathanroth Yeah we heard you the 1st time buddy !!

  • A wonderful video.

  • @philipmah. You are right. People do indentify this with Funerals because the masses first think of this as a death hymn. Really the positive side is that you are asking the Lord to "abide with me". In all times of stress and trouble what is the first thing people do?. They turn to the church. It's sad because the Lord has so much to offer - if more believed then the positive side is there and apparent. As the hymn says "Lord - abide with me".

  • @twolefthanz

"In all times of stress and trouble what is the first thing people do?"

    They get drunk .

  • @twolefthanz - beautiful thoughts! Abide with me / in me / through me.

  • A beautiful rendition of a beautiful Hymn. The pictures are also very special. A sincere Thank You.

  • @woswald1 You'e very welcome

  • you are the winner of the award for:

    best singing choir

    best additional clip

    there are no words.

Music can express those emotions we can not express in words, but to ignore is not possible eighter!

  • written in Devon (Brixham) Rev Gorden Light, theres nice now. Propper job & well sung !

  • I love this hymn / song but always associate it with death, funerals and sadness - does it have a positive side to it?

  • @philipmah

Yes there is a positive side to it! If you'll listen to the lyrics it shows a dependance on the Lord and what greater love can we find than the Lord abiding with us.

  • @philipmah This song was written by a man soon to meet a premature death. It sounds like he was trying to hold on to the illustrious tangible reality- although at times bitter- that is life.

  • @philipmah Yes, it has a positive side. If you look up the James Last version on YouTube, you can see all the words. The hymn asks God to be present throughout one's life, even though everything else changes. We lose friends and loved ones to death, divorce, relocation or whatever, and we have many disappointments as well as joys along the way. It's all ever-changing, but through it all, God is there. The hymn asks God not only to be "out there" in the universe, but "in here," in one's heart.

  • @MarthaH605 amen!

  • this is so neat!!!

  • very peaceful hymn had it at my Aunties Funerel Yesterday R.I.P Betty Hulster aged 79.

  • An extraordinary choir. An extraordinary hymn. Thank you for the post.

  • @Clarendonearl Very appreciat, thank you.

  • I cry every time I hear this glorious hymn

  • @Scotsbell Even as an atheist, this touches me so deep, that I cry too.

Without God we are all alone, whether you believe in him or not, every human wants him at his side. For some its no more than a wish, for others its faith.

  • THANKS BE TO GOD this video has not been removed or blocked by some f*****g SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT or some crap music industry company !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Please don't forget that the hymn "Abide with mw," has touched even Mahatma Gandhi's life although he was not a Christian.

  • He may have been a half naked fakir as per King George, But this was Mahatma Gandhi's favorite hymn ! ! ! And mine as well thank you so very, very, very much. It warms my heart, uplifts and gladdens my soul. Once again Thank you.

  • The most beautiful thing about Christianity is not the Bible, which is hideous, but these wonderful hymns.

  • @brunester1 You'll get thumbed down into oblivion, but I must say I agree.

  • This is beautiful! Another heavenly version is the instrumental one by James Last.

  • This song warms my heart deeply even though I am a Buddhist, I find this song very meaningful. Thank you for posting.

  • @AnnieLives You're welcome.

  • @AnnieLives Lets face it, Jesus was basically a Buddhist. As an atheist I love this hymn too.

  • @maureenOWW That's awesome. :) And therefore, you're awesome too.

  • @maureenOWW are you out of ur mind.....frm where did budhism come into the dialogue?

  • @haibro Someone said they were a buddhist and liked this hymn.
