I also checked recorded snowfall from the archives of the website, SnowJapan. I used the "up top" numbers (ie. bigger) and got 18.3cm daily average, total 567cm. So I stand corrected - you were right for Jan (I won't quibble over 2.1cm) BUT then I checked Feb. The daily average was only 5.3cm, total 152cm. Interestingly SnowJapan gives the monthly average for Jan-Feb as 390cm for each month. So Jan was above average and Feb below it. May I ask where you got your numbers from?
@triplerchan ye i used snow japan to, i have the application on my phone and just went through it at work. but ye i used the bigger snowfall from either up top or the bottom. witch was usually only max 10cm difference. but i only checked the 2011 season and i remember having a lot more snow in the 2010 and i only did january because i wasn't there for February but i will for the 2012 season.. cant wait.
thanks for explaining how you got the different numbers.
Yeah i heard much more snow in 09-10. Locals said some days they couldn't use their car and main street's snow clearer broke down so it was a trek through a meter of pow to get to the souvenir shops!
Weird thing was 10-11 (i was there all season) had a very good March, including my best day - unusually cold snap gave feather-like snow, best quality of several seasons in Japan. Lots of other powder days that month.
I'd love to wake up in your hotel on powder day and ski down before the lifts open. It was locked - no sign of life - when I had a look. A lot of those properties on the hill only get used 1 or 2 weekends per season, or they're completely abandoned and falling to bits. Good to see one being renovated. White House (slightly up from you) took a big hit in the earthquake - though probably no structural damage. Hope your place was ok.
@triplerchan ye powder days are unreal but somedays we have to wait for groomers to come by so we can get to the steep runs. just get bogged in otherwise. and ye its my g.f's dads lodge and they are they're from the start of the season untill end of march'ish and ye luckily no major damage. and you will be happy to know after your comment i was curious to know what the average snowfall actually is for january and from the records it worked out to be 20.4cms each day. 612cm total...
average snowfall each night is around 20-30cm and the most would be just over 100cm. so some pockets a easy chest deep when standing. snows all through jan and feb.
You must have picked an awesome few days. Much as I love Nozawa, to say it snows 20-30cms every day for the whole of Jan and Feb is more than an extreme exaggeration - total bullshit!!
@triplerchan generous yeah but when i say average 20-30 through jan and feb some nights more and other none. but i dont get out there with my tape measure. and ye was footage from just under a month
awesome lines. off piste looking great and not as tracked out as niseko.
