@IonLaserMinistry Its a pretty simple setup using flash caps and the small inverters and triggers you get out of disposable cameras. The inverters are pretty weak and i have since dismantled this laser and stored it away till i can get a better inverter. the descrition under the video has got a good overview of how i did the caps, im not sure it would all fit in this little message.
@rendygaul It's pretty similar... They both use a single-crystal rod, and can both be flashlamp pumped, but diode pumping the YAG with 808 nm is more efficient. Oh, and the ruby is a 3-level laser, which means the pump power has to be very high compared to the YAG, so the ruby flashlamp is usually helical, with the rod in the center. Almost all flashlamp pumped YAGs I've seen have a straight flashlamp next to the rod in a polished elliptical cavity.
@phikre Thanks! I got it off of ebay some time ago for $125. I think the last time i looked the price had gone up slighty, its still a good deal in my mind :)
Hi, nice little setup u have there, and it does a fair ammount of damage for somthing unfocused (looks unfocused...?). How many joules do you estimate is in the pulse? If you know the uF of the capacitor bank and its voltage that will be enough for me to go on. Im assuming you are using all the 8 capacitors, and waiting for them to get to a certain voltage before firing correct? If so whats the voltage at the point of firing? nice work.
@kaboooom2000uk Its unfocused, the light emitted is fairly coherent as is. I don't know how many joules the pulse is but i do know how much electrical energy is dumped into the lamp. In the vid it was getting about 45~50J from the caps, i have since swapped out the caps and made a new bank that gives it 60~70J. Thats just electrical energy in the bank, as to how well the flash lamp and rod convert that into laser light is beyond me :)
@FrigginSmift Thanks for the reply. me either, the complexity of designing an efficent laser head i leave to the pro's, but thanks for the figures, I wondered as I may buy one of these laser rods off ebay or somwhere, and have a go at my own. Question, did you have to buy any mirrors or anything, or did the laser head come as a complete assembly out of another device?. Thanks for this video.
@kaboooom2000uk Not a problem :) I bought the head off of ebay as a complete unit. The head is from surplus laser range finders that have been replaced with diode lasers. The laser head will come as a complete unit, rod, cavity, flash lamp, mirrors, q-switch, and housing all put together and aligned. The way its made is very sturdy and doesn't need to be aligned or tweaked, just give it power and its good.
btw, get a ktp crystal, and pump it with your ssy-1 , this will produce a very very very (did i mention the word very ? :D ) bright green laser flash.
@transistorbrater Ok, but will that flash not blind me? I actually have SSY-1 and a KTP, but I am waiting for a trigger coil to arrive...so, is it safe to use a KTP with this if I only have Anti-IR goggles?
@transistorbrater Yeah, man. 535 nm is REALLY bright, but just make sure to watch your power density, or you'll have a very very very broken crystal :(
I had known of this type of laser technology, but most setups were pretty pricey and complicated. When i found out about this unit i jumped at the chance and got it going.
Yeah, its got good range, the only problem is knowing where the laser is going to go as it fires in pulses and the laser beam is completely invisible :P
Nice watch

Nice setup! Try putting a lens on it... With a nice strong lens (about 1" focal length) I've been able to punch holes in aluminum foil with mine.

It's a nice example of how burst is more effective than continuous beam, experiments like this could set the basis for future laser weapons

For some reason my SSY-1 isnt burning as much... Perhaps my beam diverges too much? What is optimal for the greatest burning power?

how many watts is this laser?
QuarterSticks 1 year ago
Hmm.. i don't know. Its a flash pumped laser so i really don't have anyway to test its output :/
FrigginSmift 1 year ago
@QuarterSticks That could be easily like 1 megawatt, because the pulse is really short and it can do so much damage is such a short time...I think :)

what size yag rod does this have?
