  • Always loved this song! Right-on Maude!

  • And then there's Maud!!!!

  • AWWWWEEEEESSSSSOOOOOMMMMEEEEEE !!!!!!! =)

  • written by Marilyn and Alan Bergman and Dave Grusin, and performed by Donny Hathaway.

  • LMAO!!!!!!

  • LOL that more people know this song cause of the Family Guy then the actual show.

  • ...that was an ordeal...

  • What the hell? And the there's Maude!

  • family guy ruins this theme

  • @TheMythfox I don't know Wayne Brady did a good job singing the theme song

  • -Madame Curie was a strong women character workin all day in a science lab, yeah.

-Clara Barton was a famous nurse who was rapping with the soldiers and the bandages, too.

-Susan B Anthony always out doing stuff, marching around and holding up signs.

-Pocahontas an indian guide with lots of indian pride.

-Indira Gandhi ran a whole big country that isn´t easy even if you´re a guy.

-Amelia Earhart flew a lot of airplanes exept for that one time when she didn´t come back.

  • Donny Hathaway didn't write this The Bergmans and Dave Grusin wrote it.

  • AAH AAH! there we go! well that was an ordeal

  • amelia earnhart flew alot of aeroplanes except that one time that she didnt come back! you forgot that part!

  • AND THERE'S MAUDE!! >:O

  • bea arthur was a semi successful automobile racing driver!

  • that was an ordeal

  • Joy "Maude" Behar

  • AND THEN THERE'S MAUDE!

  • FUNNY

  • thank one of the greatest Soul singers of all time, Donny Hathaway, for this theme

  • And then there's

That old compromisin', enterprisin', anything but tranquilizing,

    Right on Maude.

I guess you mean this part.

  • beeattlleess lloovvee

  • LOL, and now you know

  • that ol' compromisin' enterprisin anything but tranquilizin' right on maude!

  • its uncompromising, BTW. She wouldn't have been the character that she is if she compromised.

  • It's actually: "that uncompromisin' enterprisin' anything but tranquilizin' right on maude!"

  • Thank you for helping us clear that up

  • @ElJefeNLA AMEN! the one and only! I wish TV nowadays was as good as Maude was! TV nowadays SUCKS!

  • LOL, I was laughing at that even more because although as far as I can remember, this is the only version of Maude, but there were tv themes that had longer versions during their early years but were cut down

  • Love this theme for years! Shocked and Chagrined to find out Donny Hathaway sang it! Wow. Good to hear it after all these years.

  • Growing up watching this show I didn't realize that this was Donny Hathaway singing this. I was just like..."Whoever is singing this is killing this!" (in a good way) As I got older and learned more about Donny and got his cds I was like..."They had a straight musical genius performing this." Donny Hathaway, Sam Cooke, and Marvin Gaye died waaaay too soon.

  • Amelia Earhart flew a lotta airplanes, except for that one time when she didnt come back...

  • HILARIOUS!!!!!!! Family Guy made this theme funny!!!! Susan B. Anthony always out doin stuff...marching around and holding up signs!!!!!

  • man, that was quite an ordeal.

  • ....And then there's Maude!

    what the hell?

    0:30

    AAH, AHH!

  • its sad how joan of arc was a revolutionary war hero who was burnt on the stake for being a witch...

  • By "revolutionary war" I presume you mean the Hundred Years' War, and by "burnt on the stake for being a witch" I presume you mean for heresy...

  • "Aincha glad she showed up?"

  • and rest in peace true comedy

  • i agree thanks family guy would have never known about maude before my time

  • i cant stop laughing thanks family guy

  • HELL YEAH , FAMILY GUY .

    && then , there's maude !

  • lol....i was watching family guy

  • Again, Family Guy reminded me of this classic.

  • donny hathaway is the man!

  • amelia earhart flew alot of airplanes, except for that one time when she didnt come back...

  • haha i came here to watch just because i just saw the fam guy version

  • good times was a spin off show from maude; florida was the maid on maude. I love bea arthur and a lot more people. I wonder if she knew how much she was adored.

  • My man Donny Hathaway

  • This song gets stuck in my head really easily. I hear it once and I'm singing it for weeks!!

  • me too! = )

  • aaargh another donny hathaway to add to my collection

  • that is right!!!

  • I never even heard of Maude til Bea Arthur died so I started watching some episodes here on youtube. It was really radical for its time! And of course Bea Arthur was great.

  • I watched Bea Arthur on the TV show of "Maude" since it made it's debut back in 1972. It ran for eight years until 1978. To me Bea Arthur is still Maude and NOT a Golden Girl from the next TV show she did of "The Golden Girls"!

  • Oops! Please excuse my typing mistake. "Maude" ran for SIX years and not eight years as I just said here. But it did run from 1972 until 1978 when it was cancelled and discontinued.

  • One of the great shows of the 70s. Anything that spawned from All in the Family is classic Tv

  • FAAAAAAAMILY GUY!!!!!!!!!

  • u suck

  • the show that made bea a legend!!

  • that was an ordeal

  • TY for singing and everything else you did to contribute to the theme song, it's sick i did a landscpae the ohter day had like 2 hours of sleep and i must of sang the Maude theme song . OMG! like 200 times but hey iy for me fired up..TY again

  • I didnt know Donny Hathaway sung this song.. I love him..A great voice gone too soon.. RIP Donny and Bea

  • i luv this song and the first time i heard this song was on family guy

    lol

    RIP

    bea

  • hahaha yeah thats where I first heard this. Fantastic...

  • and then theres maude come on

  • Ah finally! That was an ordeal

  • RIP Bea!!!

Love this theme song! Its sooo perfect for the show!

  • "And Then There's Maude" by Dave Grusin & Andrew Bergman (Sung by Donny Hathaway) Lady Godiva was a freedom rider-- She didn't care if the whole world looked. Joan of Arc, with the Lord to guide her, She was a sister who really cooked. Isadora was the first bra burner, And you're glad she showed up (Oh-oh, yeah). And when the country was falling apart, Betsy Ross got it all sewed up. [Continued in sub-post]

  • And then there's Maude--

    And then there's Maude.

    And then there's Maude--

    And then there's Maude.

    And then there's Maude--

    And then there's Maude.

    And then there's--

That uncompromisin', enterprisin', anything but tranquilizin',

    Right on, Maude!

  • Note: As with the "All In The Family" opening theme's lyric of "Gee, our old LaSalle ran great" that caused some confusion, partly because of the first version's less decipherable vocals (but also because some didn't get the reference to the old Cadillac companion line of automobile), some also wonder who is 'Isadora" of the "Maude" lyrics.

This is a reference to late 19th/early 20th Century modern dance pioneer Isadora Duncan, who was also notorious for her free-spirited antics.

  • As for the other women referred in this song, if you don't know of them, then read some good American & world history books.

  • Beatrice Arthur will always be missed, I heardly heard anyone say anything in a mean and malicious way about her, she will live on through her TV career that brought us relief, sadness, hapiness but always kept us coming back for more

  • Thanks for posting this! I loved Bea Arthur and Maude [and Golden Girls, although not as much]. Ms. Arthur was a terrific performer -- her comedy was genius! She will be truly missed.

  • Im so upset Bea pass away... she is such a great actress... we will miss you!

  • She truly is! I got to know her through Golden Girls. That was a classic show! And this theme from Maude is a good piece! It's got a gospel feel to it. Having it sung by another great musician, Donny Hathaway, makes it even better and reminds us all that she was indeed the right person to play that role. R.I.P. BEA!

  • TY For posting this GOD how I miss Bea may her soul rest in peace for all the good work she did here on earth she was truly sweet and talented GOD BLESS you girlfriend!

  • I really never cared for the tv show "Maude", but I always loved the theme song. I must have listened to this song over a dozen times so far.. Thanks!

  • Give the show another chance, there are some really great episodes & comic moments, especially the first three seasons.

Even though one might think the show would seem dated, because so much of the comedy was topical and issue-oriented, like "All In The Family" the show holds up well for the most part.

Also, we are still arguing about some of those same issues. The world has changed since 1972, but some things will never change, like good characters & family interaction.

  • Thanks!
