LOL, I was laughing at that even more because although as far as I can remember, this is the only version of Maude, but there were tv themes that had longer versions during their early years but were cut down
Growing up watching this show I didn't realize that this was Donny Hathaway singing this. I was just like..."Whoever is singing this is killing this!" (in a good way) As I got older and learned more about Donny and got his cds I was like..."They had a straight musical genius performing this." Donny Hathaway, Sam Cooke, and Marvin Gaye died waaaay too soon.
good times was a spin off show from maude; florida was the maid on maude. I love bea arthur and a lot more people. I wonder if she knew how much she was adored.
I never even heard of Maude til Bea Arthur died so I started watching some episodes here on youtube. It was really radical for its time! And of course Bea Arthur was great.
I watched Bea Arthur on the TV show of "Maude" since it made it's debut back in 1972. It ran for eight years until 1978. To me Bea Arthur is still Maude and NOT a Golden Girl from the next TV show she did of "The Golden Girls"!
Oops! Please excuse my typing mistake. "Maude" ran for SIX years and not eight years as I just said here. But it did run from 1972 until 1978 when it was cancelled and discontinued.
TY for singing and everything else you did to contribute to the theme song, it's sick i did a landscpae the ohter day had like 2 hours of sleep and i must of sang the Maude theme song . OMG! like 200 times but hey iy for me fired up..TY again
"And Then There's Maude" by Dave Grusin & Andrew Bergman (Sung by Donny Hathaway) Lady Godiva was a freedom rider-- She didn't care if the whole world looked. Joan of Arc, with the Lord to guide her, She was a sister who really cooked. Isadora was the first bra burner, And you're glad she showed up (Oh-oh, yeah). And when the country was falling apart, Betsy Ross got it all sewed up. [Continued in sub-post]
Note: As with the "All In The Family" opening theme's lyric of "Gee, our old LaSalle ran great" that caused some confusion, partly because of the first version's less decipherable vocals (but also because some didn't get the reference to the old Cadillac companion line of automobile), some also wonder who is 'Isadora" of the "Maude" lyrics.
This is a reference to late 19th/early 20th Century modern dance pioneer Isadora Duncan, who was also notorious for her free-spirited antics.
Beatrice Arthur will always be missed, I heardly heard anyone say anything in a mean and malicious way about her, she will live on through her TV career that brought us relief, sadness, hapiness but always kept us coming back for more
Thanks for posting this! I loved Bea Arthur and Maude [and Golden Girls, although not as much]. Ms. Arthur was a terrific performer -- her comedy was genius! She will be truly missed.
She truly is! I got to know her through Golden Girls. That was a classic show! And this theme from Maude is a good piece! It's got a gospel feel to it. Having it sung by another great musician, Donny Hathaway, makes it even better and reminds us all that she was indeed the right person to play that role. R.I.P. BEA!
TY For posting this GOD how I miss Bea may her soul rest in peace for all the good work she did here on earth she was truly sweet and talented GOD BLESS you girlfriend!
I really never cared for the tv show "Maude", but I always loved the theme song. I must have listened to this song over a dozen times so far.. Thanks!
Give the show another chance, there are some really great episodes & comic moments, especially the first three seasons.
Even though one might think the show would seem dated, because so much of the comedy was topical and issue-oriented, like "All In The Family" the show holds up well for the most part.
Also, we are still arguing about some of those same issues. The world has changed since 1972, but some things will never change, like good characters & family interaction.
Always loved this song! Right-on Maude!
