At 1:22 you can see a senior cop (probably a detective sergeant) pointing at several people with a loaded pistol, with his finger on the trigger. He must have been overcome by all the excitement.

I always feel so sorry for the poor saps (murderers though they are); they just don't know that in their Universe, in their version of L.A., you CANNOT get away with murder no matter how slick you are. Once Columbo is on your trail, it's over.
