What a lightweight Oprah is - "There's a whole song. It has, like, different verses and everything..." As if most songs don't have different verses "and everything"! Duh.
And, contrary to the poster's comments, the song was not written for Oprah - he wrote it years before her 10th anniversary, for the Rhythm of the Saints album but decided against using it there.
@piehole23 Oh, I see. Thanks for clarifying this. While the studio version does indeed have Southamerican qualities to it, it wouldn't have fitted well on The Saints, IMO. I actually thought that the only officially existing left-over material from The Saints was "Thelma", another beautiful song.
This one is simply fantastic though, with different verses and all! LOL...

We know of no record of BO JR having renounced his British citizenship. He is NOT a natural born citizen of U.S. Barack Obama Jr. is, likely, a British citizen , to this day.***

When Barack Obama Jr. was born on 8. 4,1961, in Honolulu, Kenya was a British colony, still part of the United Kingdoms dwindling empire. As a Kenyan native, Barack Obama Sr. was a British subject whose citizenship status was governed by The British Nationality Act of 1948. That same act governed the status of Obama Sr.s children.
Since Sen. Obama has neither renounced his U.S. citizenship nor sworn an oath of allegiance to Kenya, his Kenyan citizenship automatically expired on 8/04/1982.
I so love this song which Paul Simon wrote and performed specifically as the theme for the 10th Anniversary season (1996 - 1997) of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" - the number one talk show in the U.S. For years, this song played in my head, and I didn't find a copy of it until now. Love it!
I am not comming to the defence of anyone in particular,nd I have not lowered myself in any way. I was simply responding to Edhallick's comment which is not a kind one.. I think people should not be so cruel to one another, it lowers us all as humans when we criticize others for no reason...
@sshelget I'm not even sure what I wrote a year ago. I was probably a bit bitter about a comment he made about how music shouldn't be all about money and then charging $300 for tickets to go see him in concert.
@Edhallick Yeah, it's too bad... But many U.S. celebrities do, and I shall never understand why. Anyway, what I beautiful song. I just hope it wasn't specifically written with her in mind.
paul is a modern day mozart, i too cant stand oprah but still...the show has allowed us to see this song being partly performed by the great PAUL SIMON
I can't stand two inches of Oprah, but this song is a masterpiece. The lyrics are so powerful and poignant that it takes a song like Bridge Over Troubled Waters to rival it. Way to go, Paul - I wish you'd been more active in the mid-nineties.
Yeah, he did Capeman - but that was in the end of the 90'ies, and it was a flop. I kinda like the soundtrack though. That being said, Simon's last, truly great album was Rhythm, in my opinion...
what a precious little song.

Paul Simon is probably one of the greatest song writers of all time! He is beyond reproach.

My god, why would this absolute genius lower himself to this absolute pig. I have a lot less respect now for Paul Simon.

Why do people lower themselves to strongly jumping to the defence of celebrities who they don't know personally?

@strakallah Probably in the same way some people lower themselves to strongly criticizing celebrities who they don't know personally.
I think we all connect to others in some way whether we "know" them or not. I don't know WHY, but we do. Well, maybe I should say MOST, not all? :)

Um well, he was... He did a whole musical. But I guess I know what you mean, another "normal" studio album would have been great, too.
