It is because of rigorous epistemological discussions that we've come to agree on how to do science, so philosophy has at least been useful to create methodologies. Science IS done thanx to philosophy giving it a push!
It seems to me though that philosophy has become more important now than say 200 years ago, with the new technology that we have. Are all methodologies done and fixed forever as they are today? No way hose! We need to argue that shit still!
"Without speculation much of science as we know it now wouldn't exist."
Speculation leads to investigation. But if nothing concrete is yielded from such investigation, then speculating beyond that point is a waste.
"The presupposition that speculation is concerning something unknowable is extremely ignorant."
If we're talking about something supernatural, then it is not ignorant. People who make claims for the supernatural often attach "unknowable" to its description.
Please, Peach; When do you know that nothing concrete is going to be yielded? A better microscope or telescope did help us! Better technology will come. But philosophy about the supernatural? No! Waist of time.
I would never say we don't need philosophy anymore. I think what I get sick of is the same thing Peach mentioned... speculation about the unknowable, yet claiming to know so much about it is rather annoying. That's why I get so sick of debating morality with people... and many other things.
Science is definitely more reliable to me than organized religion of any kind. Science demands to questioning... organized religion would have us all on our knees sucking the god cock w/o question.

1. Socrates and Descartes never had a conversation! Socrates died more than 2300 years ago.
2. Wisdom is not traded down by osmoses or by genes. We all have to obtain it somehow ourselves.

So peachies has cyberstalkers eh?
How sad...
Sad that her experience on youtube is tinged with a degree of fear.
Sad that some poor lonely sap can't conquer himself and see past the illusion of interactive cyberspace which is no substitute for real interaction.
If he reads these words my advice is simple: GROW SOME BALLS. Just try and ask out a girl in real life.
Just try it!
And if you fail then laugh and "try and try again". Lots of fish in the ocean. Aye!
