@ibuprofen303 Mr Rev Gary Davis is perhaps the most versatile Blues/Rag and Gospel Guitar player. You never know what he is up to, but in the end I think its very good Music !
This song comes from the very early 1900's when cocaine was in Coca-Cola and most patent medicines. This song probably originated with a patent medicine show. So it isn't meant to reflect modern knowledge, etc. Also, if you do some research, the song "Spoonful" is actually about sex. Easy to misinterpret. See it as you want.
@effoff22 Why would a patent medicine show perform a song that says "...cocaine will kill you"? You're pretty ignorant about something you're posting for the world to see? Look into your music history. You're right about the date though. Even the Rev. Gary Davis was doing a cover of the song, which he had grown up listening to.
Lovin' Spoonful (or just Spoonful) is a different song, different rhythm, completely different lyrics.
There are many different variations on the Cocaine song in the Folk/Blues tradition, look for songs about "whiffin" or "take a whiff" for example - Leadbelly had a completely different arrangement for his Cocaine song (with the chorus, "High , high, baby take a whiff on me")
@ArcticEmmet you know they used little itty bitty spoons to dip into the cocaine and snort off of? thats what i always thought when i heard the lovin spoonful song.
This song isn't about cocaine. It's definitely about Rev. Gary Davis. By the way, don't ever mention Eric Clapton in the same sentence as actual musicians. Nobody needs a fucking history lesson about blues or cocaine. Anyone watching a Rev. Gary Davis vid knows more about blues or history than you ever will.
These old bluesmen like the Rev. lived a hard life. These young wimp's today can't measure up. Alcohol and drug's were an exscapism for them. It was Jim Crow time and they hardly got paid. You can hear the frustation in their voice when they sing. White blues players can never get that deep.
@tobyisatramp Yes, I agree in what you are saying, BUT the Blues is all about feelings, or as the Old Bluesmen said : "We play for the Devil on Saturday evening and for God on Sunday Morning".
@revnasteewaters57 So, are you saying white people dont have feelings? Black or White, you have feelings, you have the blues. Everybody does. Color of your skin doesnt change your true human emotions. Don't make race a factor in this great music. Whites, Blacks, Asians, everybody has emotions. Blues
@rocknroll1able White people sure didn't have feelings during slavery times. But white people do blues it's cool but it's not authentic. At one time they called it nigger music and didn't want to hear it. Now everyone claims the blues. Did you know that most black people have abandone the blues? So I guess it's good that white people try to keep it alive. Im not racist or anything like that but I do know the history of the blues it's my peoples music.
@revnasteewaters57 Rev, you're absolutely correct it is black culture and most accurately southern black culture. However anthropologically speaking the blues is an amazing fusion of rhythm/drum (from west Africa), diddly bow/1 string instrumentation (from north Africa), rhythms/lyrics/stringed & wind instrumentations (from Europe particularly Scotland, Ireland, & England). Old time blues men talked about singing a 'reel' as children, being taught reels as children. This is a very Scottish.
@mvktr2 The real blues started in the cotton fields of the south during slavery times. It was also used as a signal by the field hollerers to pass messages from one plantation to the other. It was music of the oppressed negroes. I agree what you say about Africa. The first string instrument was created in Egypt. Charlie Patton was the first blues recording star and he learned it from the field hands on Dockery plantation in missisippi.
@revnasteewaters57 Yes, you are right in all what you are saying and I have to admit, I didn't know Charlie Patton learned/based his playing from the fields on Dockery plantation, Mississippi !
Well, I do know, that the hollering on the Cotton-fields back then, is the root to all Blues.
As a curiousity, sometimes the cotton-field workers were not allowed to sing/holler, cause the Boss, thought they gave "secret" messages to each other !
As the Rev tells it, and Luke Jordan (1927), Johnny Cash and Eric Clapton tell it Cocaine=Blues. Maybe Buck Cherry will grow up someday and realize the blues ain`t worth the high. Freud finally realized it and Conan Doyle lived in a fantasy world. Today it has become a cancer due to strict prohibition. 28,000 dead in Mexico will attest to this.

I'm glad Hot Tuna and Jorma Kaukonen play Reverend Gary Davis, they are the ones that brought me to him.
Thanks for posting this, great picture too.

kickingmule, thanks so much for putting Cocaine Blues back up. I just about broke down when it disappeared from youtube.
On what album can I find this version of Cocaine Blues? I only have an instrumental version of the reverend playing this song.

I have had a little trouble on my channel, but now I'm back, for sure.
It's hard to get the album, but if you want the song, I send it to you in MP3-format, so please, send a mess and tell your e-mail and you have it. Ya, you can trust me !!!
Peace Brother !
