I hate this show, it has turned some people into thinking they can pick out a hoarder. After watching this show my roomates are convinced I am a horder. All my stuff is crammed into a room barely bigger then a closet and when taken all out it can fit in an SUV. My clothes alone all of it including sweaters and jackets fit into 3 baskets. Shoot my dad is a hoarder; I know what one is. As for my mom, well she's just a pig that doesn't like cleaning.
These pathetic people need to turn to the Holy Bible and accept Jesus and his help. They really are demon possessed or at least, oppressed by demons. The devil is awful and only drags people down. Please, you people, call on the God of heaven for help.
I think also as well as hoarding stuff a lot of these people just dont know how to organise anything. They just get over-whelmed by the amount. If they went to see a therapist when it began then it could be sorted but they dont they wait too long.

He suffers in silence from disposophobia, difficulty reaching decisions and procrastination. His home is shrewn with junk, books and papers are everywhere. The sink is always filled with dishes . There are narrow pathways winding through stacks of clutter for him to get around, but this space is minimal.
These so called diseases are product of overly indulged individuals who live in overly indulged societies like ours. They need to go to Africa or other countries where there is famine and despair to give them a little perspective on life.

If you start hordeing it's because you need to hold on to something, maybe to remind you of the death. Then you keep hording and hording, that's when it gets overwhelming. Let me start by saying I am the great grandson of a hoarder. He died in 1987 and my family started cleaning then, My great grandmother lived until the mid 90's and my Father inherited the home and all the junk. He lived here for 10 years and cleaned the whole time. Finally after giving up on the house it was passed down to me. It has been a horrible horrible strain on our lives and continues to be 24 years after he died. Think of your family and the fact you will never use it all in your life.

Hoarding is a product of mental illness...my mom is a hoarder, but she also is severely depressed, and probably bipolar. Calling them lazy is like calling mentally handicapped person stupid because they don't try hard enough, or some ridiculous statement like that. As a family member, have no idea how to get rid of the mess. Whenever I try to help, my mom raises hell yelling. It's all dependent on how helpful the family wants to be when the hoarder realizes that their house is disgusting.

Her answers will give you some info about how she feels. Let her know you want her to live safely and not be a fire hazard. Tell her imagine how you can get around without creating a path everywhere. A place for everything and everythingin it's place. A nice clean bed to get into, things like that. Try it. She may open up.
@DoUWanna007 Well, my parents finally got divorced, and now it's me and my brother (who just has been released from a mental hospital) living at my mom's house rotationally. Since then, my mother and I have been talking a LOT. She, this last month, has confessed to me that she finds the house disgusting and almost unbearable. So we have finally hired a declutterer and have been going through the long process of cleaning up. After years of denial, my mother told me she finally wants to heal. :)
Some of the comments here are very unrealistic. If another person gets rid of the stuff the hoarder become anxious and fills the space back up right away. Unless the hoarder does their own clean-up or at least participates, there is no cure because the OCD is not addressed. We can't 'fix them'; they have to participate in their own recovery.
@Beeattitudes22 many times, the state government would require people to come in and get rid of the things in these people's homes and frequently they would kill themselves because they couldn't come to terms with losing all the items they had possessed for such a long time.
I realize that people at risk need intervention, but that only addresses the immediate danger, not the actual behavioral problem. The imagined loss of 'security' causes despair, or should I say, 'deepens despair'. Most hoarders are already very isolated and despairing.

Hoarding is a product of mental illness...my mom is a hoarder, but she also is severely depressed, and probably bipolar. Calling them lazy is like calling mentally handicapped person stupid because they don't try hard enough, or some ridiculous statement like that. As a family member, have no idea how to get rid of the mess. Whenever I try to help, my mom raises hell yelling. It's all dependent on how helpful the family wants to be when the hoarder realizes that their house is disgusting.

@tyrannosauruser They also think you are interferring. In order for you to get thru to your mom, ask her point blank, do you like living this way? Her answers will give you some info about how she feels. Let her know you want her to live safely and not be a fire hazard. Tell her imagine how you can get around without creating a path everywhere. A place for everything and everythingin it's place. A nice clean bed to get into, things like that. Try it. She may open up.

@DoUWanna007 Well, my parents finally got divorced, and now it's me and my brother (who just has been released from a mental hospital) living at my mom's house rotationally. Since then, my mother and I have been talking a LOT. She, this last month, has confessed to me that she finds the house disgusting and almost unbearable. So we have finally hired a declutterer and have been going through the long process of cleaning up. After years of denial, my mother told me she finally wants to heal. :)

Some of the comments here are very unrealistic. If another person gets rid of the stuff the hoarder become anxious and fills the space back up right away. Unless the hoarder does their own clean-up or at least participates, there is no cure because the OCD is not addressed. We can't 'fix them'; they have to participate in their own recovery.

@Beeattitudes22 many times, the state government would require people to come in and get rid of the things in these people's homes and frequently they would kill themselves because they couldn't come to terms with losing all the items they had possessed for such a long time.

I realize that people at risk need intervention, but that only addresses the immediate danger, not the actual behavioral problem. The imagined loss of 'security' causes despair, or should I say, 'deepens despair'. Most hoarders are already very isolated and despairing.

I say burn their houses with fire, and committ the hoarder to a mental institution to get some help. That's the best solution for everybody. Imagine having to live next door to a house filled with rats, roaches and maggots. They're coming to your house next.

@shinbanman - I told my husband if I started piling up boxes and refusing to get rid of them - just chuck them while I'm not home one day - I'm sure they'd get pissed off if the husbands started doing it - but I think they'd get the hint after a bit.
As much as I DON'T want to blame the "significant other" in these relationships - they saw thes hit piliing up before it got that bad too... and didn't do a damn thing about it.
