This performance doesn't seem balanced at all to me. The altos are too dominant. The drums seemed too loud in the first part of the piece. Maybe it's just the recording. I do think that the altos are playing quite well.
Matt Patnode is a teacher of mine, and what a teacher he is. I've also taken lessons from Russ Peterson at IMC, and they're both outstanding teachers. If you ever get a chance to see these cats play, it's more than worth it.
I saw Matt Patnode in one of his very early performances. It was at the Plattsburgh Jazz Festival in Plattsburgh, NY. The band was playing "Gospel John" and it morphed into a sax solo, and Matt just played some insanely sick riffs that brought the freaking house down. And that was high school. Dude still rocks. I got chills playing trumpet behind him, and chills listening to the quartet! This is great stuff. Is the CD still available?
im now saying it wasnt great! it was awsum! but why do lots of sax players get soooooooo impressed by altissimo? its not like its the most difficult thing to master!
Interesting version. Click on mine for a big band arragement that is more like it was written.

Settle down "fartpacker413". Check out my band's new video "Peccadillo Circus" if you want to hear some proper jazz.

I'm still siding with what I said ten months ago, but the drums are WAY too loud for this piece.

Really good playing but i kinda think drums just get in the way of a sax 4tet. Good drumming though.

Russell Peterson!! WOO! two altos amazing... the drummer was too freaking loud for the coolness to get out just sounds like a bunch of garbling.
