This is the last time I get suckered into watching an inconsequential video because some idiot calls it the "best ever!" It's nothing but a throwaway comment by an artist whom I've admired for going on 50 years, but whom you have cheapened by raving about an offhand remark he made in a badly-recorded interview.
for more than 25 years i have been listening to his songs, reading his poems. when i was young and suffering from depression he saved me and thus became a part of my life i cannot and will not separate from me.
i am a cohen too but it makes no difference, it has no influence - his words and thoughts are what counts.
i am afraid of the day i will have to read that he has left us ...
Yes, he's right - - most are unspectacular, those who demonstrate or posit; but Leonard is a talent of his own right, per se, and only has to make an utterance to be beatific, harmonious and relevant to the human spirit!
Leonard Cohen is one of our greatest tresures of humanity! I love you Leonard!
They come because you are the most charming, poetic and eloquent person who both entertains and touches people deeply with your words and music. I had the privilege of seeing you at the O2 theatre in Dublin when, in your mid 70s, you captivated 15,000 people with your honesty, wisdom and the simple humanity of your music along with your sincere humility. I lost count of the number of encores you did because I, like 15000 others, didn't want the evening to end.
Just shows that he is unique and insightful to say the least. He does have the heart of a poet (which he first was) and he is under no illusions.............love this guy.
Cohen is cool and laid back because of his songs, his life and writings. But the interviewer gives him the standard interview question "Why do people come to see you" and instead of doing the celebrity pose and regaling in the moment, he humbly states "I don't know" which is hallmark of genius, and eschews the typical smug celebrity moment of self-appreciation.
@rosengj I disagree. I'd agree that Cohen's a genius. I think we listen to him for his honesty, his way of describing his condition, the way we all relate to his condition and know it's also ours... but the answer "I don't know" isn't really thoughtful. Just heard Streisand asked the same question and gave the same answer, with a little snear besides as if she were irritated with her fans. I mean, really. Wasn't even gracious, as Cohen's answer ultimately was.
the lyrics are breath-taking, evocative and haunting..songs like 'one of us cannot be wrong' just get me everytime..they crack me open a little bit more each time i listen.. ...love Leonard
@crostantino10 The interviewer asked him why do you suppose people come to see you? He took his time to answer and said if you hold something up that is curious a number of people will stop to look. Not giving himself much credit as to why they do. She asks why are they so fascinated he says I don't know. he also says the fact that someone comes to look at you does not mean anything extraordinary is going on.perhaps they come see to make a spectacle of myself.
Interesting response, though I believe that the analogy fails when you realize that people are paying to see him. That's the difference between glancing at a curious little sign and going out of your way to see it.

Leonard's best ever reply?
Jools Holland (early 90s, some time): So. Leonard, why did you start writing songs?
LC: To win women's hearts.
JH: And did it work?
LC (after a long pause): Yes.

He, to me, has that same modesty as Bob Dylan. They just do what they do and it is MAGIC.
This is the first interview I have seen of Leonard Cohen...

Am confused that some found Cohen cool and laid back in this clip. To me it felt as if he were struggling rather badly.

Hes says "benevolently as possible"....not "empty as possible"
Knowing the meaning to that word changes the context completely. Empty is the polar opposite of the message he is trying to convey.
