Its not sad really, he just learns to accept who he is, which is better than not coming to terms with yourself. So for the long run, it is actually a good ending. It basically asks the viewer to love himself/herself.

Basically, Hal (the main character) lost at love and the debate, and his last lines were something like, "Love shouldn't be rocket science." In other words, the ending was that in life, it's the little victories that count, (Hal managed to overcome his stuttering) and that you will lose at times.

this movie was strange, quirky and at the same time actually really good....it kept my attention and it had me laughing...i kinda got annoyed at some of the stuttering scenes because he would take forever to say something and i think it was kinda over done but a really good movie and it didnt have the traditional ending thats in those other teenage love stories
