cutting open and narrowing a sportster gas tank shell

Why do you prefer to cut down the center then cut two lines? Why not just mark your center line and then mark two lines 5/8in apart from the center line so you only have to make two cuts. Just more accurate with the height gauge or what? Excellent work. I will be narrowing a sportster tank today see how it goes with my shitty mig.
