you got some blinding tunes bro.much the same as my record collection, all 12" cheers for posting all your stuff, appreciated, saves me diggin out my records and blowing off dust. peace!!
Chris Barrie did the voice of Ronald Reagan for this track, it was because he voiced Reagan in Spitting Image that first ran a few months before Two Tribes was released in 1984.
@cunnilicker On the UK compilation 12'' 80's Volume 2. Hope this helps. I have all the FGTH 12'' singles. ZTT Records made it difficult to collect by releasing several versions of the same record under identical catalogue numbers. This version was the original 12'' released. And the grimmest - in 1984 the cold war was ongoing - we could have been nuked at any time. People don't realize that today - it was a scary time to be young.
this version of two tribes appears only on the first printing of the welcome.... cd after that it was the same version as the album though i'm sure that it appears elsewhere too
I swear pretty much everything that Trevor Horn is involved with is a total joy to listen to!! Frankie, ABC (Lexicon of Love), Yes (90125), Propaganda, Grace Jones (Slave), even Dollar!! They have an unmistakable quality of sound and chord structures that grab me like no other.................
FYI Patrick Allen (I believe) did the voiceover for the public information film "Protect and Survive" in the UK. It was on how to survive a nuclear attack (surviving the bombs, only to die starving and contaminated in a nuclear winter?). I think that's where the idea came from. Either way, it's a powerful voice, very relevant for this track. Thanks for posting this. Oh, and FGTH rocks!
A very popular group and song in DC nightclubs. Never has been there a moment as when the lights when dim, the strobe lights got going and this started. Truly magical...truly powerful. Saw them at the Ontario Theatre in DC 1984. Incredible!
Thankyou so much 0x51d for putting this classic on YouTube. I remember first hearing it when Andy Peebles played it on Radio 1 back in 1984. It made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up back then and it still does 26 years later. Trevor Horns production is stunning, IMO it's the finest 12" version of a track ever made.
lost me 12" years ago, great to hear it again, result of nuke war back then was depicted in a film in 1984/5, cant remember what it was called but would love to know, any other fortysumthings remember the film???
Yeh! the English voice over is Patrick Allen. He done the original vid in case there was a nuclear war which is sampled in the tune. Dont know about the American voice though.
The guy doing all the voice overs for Regan is Chris Barrie who did th The Brittas Empire and Red Dwarf. John Craven from News Round (BBC1) did the bit about tagging the family.
From one of the greatest albums of all time. Too bad these guys never realized their potential. They didn't give us nearly enough music! Truely an underrated band from the get-go.
Excellent. I think the guy making the "air attack warning" was the same guy who did the Barratt ads in the 70s. (The bloke in the suit hanging from the helicopter).
oh how i whish that some band would pick up that way of feeling/thinking about music. trevor horn and frankie were truly genious ... i just love that sound ...
I've still got this record.....it was the nuts and it still is, unbeatable bass line. One of the best songs of the eighties.....done a good job with it too m8, thanks.......FGTH weren't a band...they were an event.!.....1984 belonged to them.
'If any member of your family should die when in the shelter, put them outside but remember to tag them first for identification purposes.' Was this an actual real warning?
yes,i think it was called protect and survive, done when things really could have gone tits up between nato and warsaw pact,it was done back in the 60's on the tv stations
It could have been real life instructions had things gone a little bit differently. I never thought we would make it out of the Cold War myself. I thought it was just an eventuality when I was younger.
I take it (Annihailation) Stands for Anne Dudly .. the genius behind the keyboard arrangments .... i worked with her once ... she is a genius !! composser arranger and all round brilliant musician ....
Christ, I must have driven my parents mad with this. For about a full year I played this at full blast in our small 2 bedroom mid terraced council house. With me trying my very best to perfect the bassline through the hundred watt head ands 4x12 cabinet I had!! What times. Saw them live at the much lamented Glasgow Appollo in 1984. They were immense and it remains my greatest ever gig. Welcome to The Pleasuredome was just mind blowing. Long gone, but never forgotten....
When this first came out I lived in a block of flats and used to play the begining at full blast out the window....it made people stop in the street lol...of course I have grown up now (45)and would never do anything like that now!!!!!
I used to dance the Friday nights away on this song. What a time it was! So young and innocent still. Am now 45 but it seems like only a few years back. I too played it full blast and turned my parents living room into a disco.
Music...... The ultimate time machine!
