I was stationed in Sasebo from 1968-1970. Great memories. I was in communications and the comsta was in the Admin building. The Surfbird was berthed close by. Crazy Corners was "anchored" by a bar called Cisco's that stayed open after hours because they served food.
@Northwestrebel I was stationed in Sasebo from 1967-1969 in communications and also at the Admin Building... who are you.............. I am Jim McNew
I served aboard the USS Catskill MCS 1 jul 69-nov 70 and was homeported out of Sasebo until aug 70. I remember the EM club was up on a hill and there were a ton of bars. I believe the entrance to the bar district was called paradise alley..............
Was stationed in Sasebo from December 1961 at Mobile Support Unit 3 until January 1964. Then back for duty in December 1964 aboard the USS Widgeon (MSC-208) until July 1965 then to USS Warbler (MSC-206) unit January 1968. Daugher born at Base Hospital in Dec. 1965. Hanged out at the Blue Bird Stand Bar in Paradise Alley and the Acey/Duecy Club (First and Second Class Mess) just outside the Main Gate.
I was there from 1971-75 at Marine Barracks but I was on Shore patrol the whole time, I went back there in 2007 1/2 the base is gone went back to the J/n Military I sure miss that base had lot of fun and LOL locked up a few sailors only a joke.
I was in port Sasebo three times in November and December 1969 (aboard USS Collett DD-730). Had great times with my ship mates ashore. I remember the cute girls especially! Sasebo was a great liberty town!
went aboard ajax ar6 in 1960. flagship for com serv ron. in sasebo for 3 years. it was a good time.lived on matsu hill.partied at todai in saki town.spent weekends at 99 islands.
I was born in Sasebo in 1970, my dad was stationed there. I believe he was on the USS Epping Forrest? He still talks about an area in Sasebo called "Crazy Corners"! Sure did appreciate the video. I'm sure my parents will enjoy it as well. Thanks again.
I was first in Sasebo in 1970, and spent about 9 months total in-port during my 2 cruises, but I don't know of your Dad's ship. I also never heard of "crazy corners", but that doesn't mean that there wasn't such a place. Good memories, anyways.
@popeyeR7 He may be referring to Sailor town, which is where all the alcoholic sailors go to drink. Today, this area...still has drunken sailors in bars.
And it is funny how I also can recognise these places. Especially 2:16 and 2:26. The crane at 2:16 is still there, too.
I was born there in January 1969. My dad was stationed there also, and I know the Epping Forrest was one of the ships he was on. I'll have to ask him about "Crazy Corners."
@stepskills I was there from 1971-75 with Marine Barracks but was on shore patrol the whole time, both my kids were born there as well, LOL I locked up a few sailors in my 4 yrs there LOL Just joking. I went back in 2007 1/2 the base is gone back to the J/N military and only found 5-6 bars , there used to be 234 bars in sailor town and RTO. this was my best duty station.
@stepskills I was stationed on the USS Surfbird in the early 60's and remember the Epping Forrest well. Like the Epping Forest, the Surfbird was forward deployed to Sasebo. Crazy Corner was a row of bars located on the right side a block after you crossed the bridge. It was mostly frequented by sailor/marines stationed in Sasebo or ships homeported there. If you have Google Earth, crazy corner is located at 33° 10' 28.55" N 129° 43' 01.32" E

In 1972 when you were stationed in Sasebo, I was a college student, and had a part time job at the US Navy base where I picked up American English. I served American Navy soldiers as a bartender at the EM Club. I wonder if you visited the club. If so, you sure saw me, making cocktails behind the bar.
I didn't go to the EM Club too often, but remembered great Margaritas, there. It was never very busy when I went there. I also remember a lady bartender.
I was stationed on the AjaxAR6 from 61 to 63 in Sasebo and just amazed at some of the changes that have been made. The 72 video looks like what i remember
Thanks. I think I've seen the Warbler's website. I actually spent more time in Sasebo during our 70-71 cruise, than the 72 cruise. Just didn't do too many pictures then.

Wow, what memories. I was stationed in Sasebo from 1968-1970. Crazy Corners was where the bar district started, right past the bridge.

Very, very nice. It brought back fond memories, although, my ship the Warbler, left Sasebo in 1970.
