Hey how about you get your self-righteous head out of your ass? If these military men want to go on Wheel of Fortune, then yes they better care how to pronounce these names.
@AntSuck Not self-righteous, just appreciative of the daily and sometimes lifelong sacrifice our military men and women make so that the rest of us can stay at home and watch t.v. at our leisure, which is more than I can say for some people. And, there is no need to be rude and to use offensive language; I was stating MY opinion. Last time I checked, that was still allowed in my Country.
By the way, a question for all of you civilian "geniuses" out there criticizing these guys. Do you think members of our military are worried about how to pronounce "celebrities' names while they're dismantling IEDs or are involved in a fierce gunfight or while holding their dying buddies in their arms? Do you think they SHOULD BE? I didn't think so... Use your computer for some good. Write to a member of our military and tell them you are grateful for their sacrifice. I know I am.
I commend these guys for serving our military, but c'mon, that was pretty bonehead for ALL of them to do that in a row. I see that the marine in the middle aka Philburn, got all serious and tried to pretend his answers phase him to make face to the audience.
They don't know this because they're off protecting ALL OF US so that WE can watch mindless entertainment like Regis PhilBURN and Kelly RIPE AH....God bless them and keep them safe!!
This is BS. These guys don't waste their time watching TV & they got penalized for pronouncing names wrong. I could understand not accepting the first one (Philbrin) but the others were errors of pronunciation when the letters were already up there.
I'm sorry , but if you STILL think the brightest of our nation serves proudly in the military after watching this , you are probably changing the oil on a tank right now .
It seems like what happened was the first guy messed up with "Philbrin", but the other guys thought he said "Philbin" so they were deliberately avoiding that, causing confusion as to the correct answer.
@DoTheDanwah Pronunciation matters. The only exception I really know is that "ESPRESSO" can be pronounced like "EXPRESSO" and either is acceptable. There are judges who deem close cases like this, and PHILBURN, REE-PA, RIPE-A, etc. all do not solve the puzzle correctly.
@WayoshiM - Indeed...case in point: a few years back, a contestant was ruled wrong on the puzzle "FRANCIS FORD & SOFIA COPPOLA" for incorrectly pronouncing their surname.
Maybe these guys came back from years of consecutive service in Afghanistan or Iraq, and the last thing they are gonna think of is this. Not saying this is an excuse, but they have more important things on their minds, whether one thinks the recent wars are/were justified is another topic not suited to this video, IMO. I think it's pretty cool to see them all fired up and in good spirits, whether they are dumb or smart.
@Sunavagun82 you have an odd criteria for measuring intelligence. not knowing how to pronounce the name of hosts on day time talk shows is your proof for dumb people in the military ?
@Sunavagun82 Most military people have went through college. Duh? They just trying to do the puzzle. They don't watch a lot of TV like u do and are busy training and doing their best to protect u and everyone in the US
the fact that they can't get the name right of some stupid (and completely lame) talk show, just means that they're not glued to their tv 24/7. so while some of you are making fun of them for being dumb at least they're not fatass slobs that sit in front of their tv all day eating potato chips.
I don't know if anyone already said this or if anyone noticed, but the puzzleboard lights are in motion as if it's a tossup puzzle throughout the whole round.
@Kasevam Who the hell are you? Where the hell have you been? Kelly's been in TV since 1987 as a dancer on a cable show, has been a soap actress, and has only done her talk show for the last NINE FRIGGIN' YEARS!
The strange thing is that "pop culture" names like this are glaring when mispronounced. It is also no surprise that these men have better things to do than watch "Regis and Kelly."
@skuttytip I think theyre just stupid. Ive never watched an episode of that show and i could say regis's name perfectly. He has done a lot more than that show. It's like mispronouncing the presidents name. He's been in the spotlight much longer than any president.
I think the show is a little too strict with pronunciations. This clip was more of an embarrassment for the show than the contestants, really.
The only one that sounded phonetically wrong to me was the first one (Philburn). Rest sounded like accentual errors (Reepa, Raipa) and in my book, they should be a little more willing to accept these kinds of errors, especially when names (essentially made-up words) are involved.
I have no idea what was wrong with the 3rd solve, seemed correct to me.
I was on the same ship as the guy on the far left while in the Navy. He was our Master at Arms. Wow, what a small world. Now I get to laugh at what a retard he actually is and what I thought he was while in the military.
@RLTRUELOVE1972 I'm black and from the Army. I spell better than you...but that isn't saying much. How about you come iron my uniform you non-serving wuss.
@chazkm there's idiots in every branch. shouldn't judge a group off one person. If we did than someone could say the Army sucks, they lost control of ramadi in 06 and the Marines had to move in and regain control while that 1 unit move down south. or Army is pussy since 1 jessica lynch was too scared to fire her weapon. Mjr Hassan going on a kill spree, Army must be crazy muslims. or pfc manning leaking secret info... you see what I mean. the fact that we serve is all that should matter.
I'm active duty U.S. Coast Guard and I'll admit I thought those guys were dumber than a bag of hammers. I cringed because I knew that the ensuing comments would be peppered with ignorant people going on about how stupid military personnel are. Damn I hate being right all the time. Seriously people? "Our military is as dumb as a fucking rock"? What if there were three fireman up there? Farmers? Priests? Would you conclude that all of those groups of people have the IQs of circus chimps? Be fair.
I agree with you, these guys don't care about regis and ?, they care about the whole country and protecting it. These guys train to go to OEF and OIF and don't waste there precious time watching this, during there free time they go to college, train one another, and go to the chowhall(food hall) together, because they know they will be beside each other during combat and will not leave each other. Im in the marine corp and I didn't know how to pronounce there names because I don't care either
@Nyak81: Even if you're AMISH, you know who Regis Philbin is. There's no way anybody can back out of failing at that.
If these people who only care about protecting the country are going to take the time to sign up for this TV appearance, maybe they should do a little bit of practicing while they're at it before coming out to represent the U.S. military on national television, in case something like THIS happens.
@pintowes - I'd hardly call Regis and Kelly a "trend whore" show, seeing how it's been running for close to 30 years now...I'd think it would be common knowledge.
Damn, if the puzzle had anything to do with the U.S. Constitution, those boys would've been stuck there till the end of the American conquest of Afghanistan; i.e. forever.
That's okay.
The Military Mulching Machine doesn't want thinkers. It wants killers.
This is funny? How about cutting them some slack, PAT. Or the Judges hiding behind the screen. Slap "Afghanistan" up on that puzzle. Bet they get that one right. "Democracy".
These guys are fighting for our country. I don't want them to know Regis and Kelly. Someone commented they're afraid these guys fly our jets. You should be afraid if they DID know the puzzle.
I was watching this with my buddy George the guy who won the round and he was on the ground laughing at how lame they were. You can't hear it but he tells Jack that he liked Kathy Lee better at the end of the round.
This mispronunciation of Ripa could be an alternate pronunciation. they should have given it to him. A few days ago they allowed Espresso to be pronounced Expresso.
Completely agreed. They cant accept "Philmin" obviously, but I personally would have pronounced Ripa with the strong I, as the contestant did. Bad form, Wheel of Fortune judges.
I can see where they're coming from with names. Kelly says her last name "rip-uh," so there shouldn't be a reason to accept anything else. The same thing happened with FRANCIS FORD & SOFIA COPPOLA. The puzzle was completely filled in, but "cuh-PO-la" was ruled incorrect.
There's only one correct way to pronounce someone's name, but certain words have multiple pronunciations that are, if not "correct," then at least common enough to be accepted (e.g. expresso/espresso).
Another interesting parody besides the "Family Guy" one was on SNL a few years ago where there were three clueless contestants who couldn't solve the puzzle with one letter left. Pat (played by Tom Hanks) desperately tried to give them some clues as to what the puzzle was, but to no avail.
Regis didn't mention this on his show this morning. Must not have seen it or heard about it. The players of Rolf's show couldn't pronounce the lesser known historical figure Saint THomas Aquinas. I remember Coppola, as in Sofia and Francis Ford, not being pronounced right. Concerto as in Piano Concerto was pronounced concert-o at one point. Milan as in Milan Italy was pronounced wrong in a bonus round once.
I like how everyone mess each other up. I mean if one were confused and thought he should of gotten this puzzle solved, then he would think it'll be the pronunciation, thus the downhill fall.
I am simply stunned, especially for Lee's missolve.
The first violation is to not know who Regis Philbin is - that should be required for American citizenship. Next, Lee heard two incorrect ways to pronounce BOTH Philbin and Ripa, and even one correct way. How is it humanly possible to still get either of them wrong?
I could make a case simply on not knowing Regis Philbin, but this calls for immediate psych eval before resumption of duty. It's that bad. Here's the worst Wheel round - EVER.
I guess after this, Pat is not the first person Regis would turn to to sub in for him on his show. He has a few times, but likely won't too much more after this happened.
Are you that fucking stupid? How the hell is a service member supposed to know daytime TV personalities??? The service members are out deployed or are on duty while your ass is on the coach getting fat watching Regis & Kelly.
You're a moron. What does 22 years have to do anything? I've never seen the show, I've never watched a soap opera, I couldn't name you have the people these days morons like you consider celebrities. Get out from behind you TV and start doing something productive with your life.
@mgoblue0970 "I couldn't name you have the people"
"Have" the people?
Either you didn't actually attend U of M or their standards have decreased considerably. Granted, I met quite a few idiots when I was there, and I considered the school a bit of a fraud, BUT...
@mgoblue0970 The average age of our military is around 19 . Regis Philbin has been on T.V. that long , so its not like they haven't known who he is their entire life . I don't EVER watch that crappy show or Wheel for that matter , but given multiple chances to read a name in English , it seems pretty easy . By the way how many times per episode do they say his name on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire ?
@MindofaJedi uhhhhh him being on tv their whole lives WOULD mean that they wouldve have known who he was their wholes lives. children are not immune to knowledge.
@WhoaKaela I said that they would know who he is because he has been on television their entire life . Did you misread my statement or are you saying they never saw television as children ?
Huh? What the hell is your point? I'm 40 and never seen one of Regis' shows. Should I have?
When I was in the service, daytime TV was the last thing on my mind while I was on duty.
Believe it or not, some people have a life. If you want to spend yours in front of a TV, fine. But don't call these people stupid because they didn't know of someone who you think they should have.
Otherwise, I suggest you stand a post and see what it's like.
Wow, I actually remember seeing this on television.
I wished there was a clip somewhere with Regis and Kelly commenting on this clip. LMAO

One thing that confuse me is that why the red contestant buy the vowels if he knew what the puzzle is, that the waste of money.

Wow. I really hope I see this on Live sometime...
Epic win for the upload.

I guess after this, Pat is not the first person Regis would turn to to sub in for him on his show. He has a few times, but likely won't too much more after this happened.

I do apologize. I didnt mean to offend. I was just having fun. Looking back I do realize my comments were inapropriate and possibly offensive.

No, but it's quite clear for a webcam, and nicely widescreened. It was a compliment :)

Is it just me or does it seem like all the REALLY true epic fails happen when the contestants are from the Armed Forces?

Are you that fucking stupid? How the hell is a service member supposed to know daytime TV personalities??? The service members are out deployed or are on duty while your ass is on the coach getting fat watching Regis & Kelly.
mgoblue0970 1 year ago 2
@mgoblue0970 Regis has been on the show for over 22 years. Not too hard to remember his name after that long.
AlexBbyCakes 1 year ago
@AlexBbyCakes
You're a moron. What does 22 years have to do anything? I've never seen the show, I've never watched a soap opera, I couldn't name you have the people these days morons like you consider celebrities. Get out from behind you TV and start doing something productive with your life.
mgoblue0970 1 year ago
@mgoblue0970 "I couldn't name you have the people"
"Have" the people?
Either you didn't actually attend U of M or their standards have decreased considerably. Granted, I met quite a few idiots when I was there, and I considered the school a bit of a fraud, BUT...
Idi0cracy 1 year ago
@mgoblue0970 The average age of our military is around 19 . Regis Philbin has been on T.V. that long , so its not like they haven't known who he is their entire life . I don't EVER watch that crappy show or Wheel for that matter , but given multiple chances to read a name in English , it seems pretty easy . By the way how many times per episode do they say his name on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire ?
MindofaJedi 1 year ago
@MindofaJedi uhhhhh him being on tv their whole lives WOULD mean that they wouldve have known who he was their wholes lives. children are not immune to knowledge.
WhoaKaela 1 year ago
@WhoaKaela I said that they would know who he is because he has been on television their entire life . Did you misread my statement or are you saying they never saw television as children ?
MindofaJedi 1 year ago
@MindofaJedi

@mgoblue0970 it wouldn't surprise me if you didn't know this puzzle either, asshole. Keep trolling around, you're one real tough guy. I'M SCARED!!!
