@DoTheDanwah Pronunciation matters. The only exception I really know is that "ESPRESSO" can be pronounced like "EXPRESSO" and either is acceptable. There are judges who deem close cases like this, and PHILBURN, REE-PA, RIPE-A, etc. all do not solve the puzzle correctly.

I think the show is a little too strict with pronunciations. This clip was more of an embarrassment for the show than the contestants, really.

The only one that sounded phonetically wrong to me was the first one (Philburn). Rest sounded like accentual errors (Reepa, Raipa) and in my book, they should be a little more willing to accept these kinds of errors, especially when names (essentially made-up words) are involved.

I have no idea what was wrong with the 3rd solve, seemed correct to me.

I can see where they're coming from with names. Kelly says her last name "rip-uh," so there shouldn't be a reason to accept anything else. The same thing happened with FRANCIS FORD & SOFIA COPPOLA. The puzzle was completely filled in, but "cuh-PO-la" was ruled incorrect.

There's only one correct way to pronounce someone's name, but certain words have multiple pronunciations that are, if not "correct," then at least common enough to be accepted (e.g. expresso/espresso).
