There's a lot of passion in NIN's version, but it's just a little bit over the top. Also, he pretty much fucked up the meaning of the song when he said "crown of shit". I mean, that's just pointless and makes for a rather stupid metaphor.
Me thinks that as a form of expression this song moved me more coming from Cash. (Not that Trent's heroin induced sorrows were invalid...) Cash's voice was so strong even at the end.
The new version of the singles album so kicks ass. U can fell his pain cumming out in it and physically makes u hurt when listening to it. Cash's is good but not even close.........
Trent from NIN wrote it but Cash owns the song via means of talent and delivery. The Nin version is good but once cash gets a hold of such a well written song. he turns silver into gold
I think johnny cashes version of hurt is better, with Johnny he makes you believe it, he sells the song so much better, at that point in time he was fairly frail and you could hear it in his voice and it added to the song.
I agree... I liked Hurt by Johnny Cash better. Which isn't to say that I didn't love it by NIN too... Every time I hear it, I remember my moody phase in high school when I'd blast it out from my car.
With Cash though, his wife had just died, he was on his last legs, it was one of those rare covers that's better than the original.
June died in may he died in sept. and she is in the video. He was definitely not singing about losing her... because she wasn't gone yet. He was maybe anticipating the loss? but not about her death.
no i think he meant it to apologize for being an asshole over the years and now he's hurting ...maybe? cause we all now he has done things in his life he regrets and that's why i sense a great deal sadness in his cover
Never appreciated NIN - always LOVED JOHNY CASH. I'M 26.
Heard NIN first - felt it. Heard Cash next... appreciate his response to the lyrics. I feel cash felt what we all feel to this song... sums up life. Cash was able to redo it well appreciating the words... but not doing the original justice to it. NIN made this song... Cash apppreciated it. Hard to say but NIN deserves all credit
i like both versions there both good each talking about something different NIN version talking about the world and johnny cash talking about his life both are good in my opinion i give prompt to both artists
I apologise - just seen the J Cash version and that makes more sense than this one - if you don't understand the message of this song - watch the J Cash video-it's prob easier to understand. Once again -didnt see the difference so apologise for comment.
that's fine, don't worry about it, i liked one of the vids from this person so i thought i'd try out someothers, i just thought it was a bit odd. i'd never even heard of this song before so i thought i would listen to it, it's just not my style
Thanks for being so generous-I didn't deserve that to be honest. The one thing I thought was totally amazin bout this video was the artiness of it all and film depicting the decay. Anyway, cheers and peace!
urm dude? what do u mean j cash's version makes more sence? the only word changed in this is crown of thorns to crown of shit? although im not sticking up for NIN they did great songs, then did a shitty emo cover of this
4 all u stupid fucks that dident no johny cash rote this and is on his gratest hits albem nin did a cover of it. i like nin voice in it better than the original but i like cashes guitar and softer melody but there boyh great in my eyes
You are the biggest fucking idiot ever....This is NIN's song they put this on there 1994 album The Downward Spiral and in 2002 Johnny Cash did a cover of it look up information and do research instead of talking out of your ass idiot.
not to mention that every word of this song came from trent's soul as he was going through what he was. and thats not to mention every note of the song. cash was good, but he just covered the song with a one word difference. Its hard to find songs with this much depth and pain behind them, and for that i think trent really deserves some credit; many other musicians could learn a lot from this song.
I actually read somewhere that Trent doesn't feel the song belongs to him anymore because Johnny did such an amazing job making it his own. He's a Cash fan, and actually prefers Johnny's version because even though he wrote it Trent thought Johnny captured this whole other element of suffering and loss, especially when you look at it in context of where he was in his life I think it's the last vid he did, and I know it's the last with June before she died. The way she still looked at him=amazing
I believe Trent puts more emotion into this song and how much this song means to him. If someone messes up this song live he says FÜCK you and plays another song.
Johnny Cash's version is simply a record company's artist development department trying to breath new life into a dying career....it worked (aside from their client dying -LOL!). Today's "MTV Generation" makes me sick... You guys are fucking morons, yet you think you're so smart because you're permanently jacked into Wikipedia/and the InterWeb. It's people like you that are responsible for things like: MTV becoming the WE channel, the lowered standards in cinema, etc.
JOHNNY CASH!!!!!!! You guys are fucking retards. When this song/album came out in '94, you were too busy listening to the Spice Girls/wrapped up in your faggoty fake lives to realize its power. Fucking Johhny Cash... You're just as bad as the morons who think Kurt Cobain is played out (if it weren't for him, you wouldn't have your precious emo music - you'd still be listening to Spice Girls, or rocking Motley Crue shirts). Nirvana helped pave the way for Alternative music in the mainstream!
Yeah Johnny Cash did a remake of the song, because he said that he found it raw, true and beautiful. In addition, he could relate to the song because he was an rtist facing the same dilemnas.
Yea Trent Reznor wrote this song, he says that after he heard cash's version of this is when he realized that he wrote this song FOR cash, cash did a better job on it than anyone else could of possibly done
I wish Johnny had though because I think his is the better version (or at least the version that speaks to me more). But he wouldn't have had a song to sing without NIN.

I think both versions are good in their own way. Curiously, I first thought that NIN did the cover, too - just 'cause Cash is older than Reznor.
Nevertheless, he can write like a much older person - like he's somewhat "wise"
(maybe it's a matter of how much one has suffered/experienced). The lyrics are awesome - they fit well to Johnny Cash's life, too.
