I think both versions are good in their own way. Curiously, I first thought that NIN did the cover, too - just 'cause Cash is older than Reznor.

Nevertheless, he can write like a much older person - like he's somewhat "wise"

(maybe it's a matter of how much one has suffered/experienced). The lyrics are awesome - they fit well to Johnny Cash's life, too.

I think johnny cashes version of hurt is better,with Johnny he makes you believe it, he sells the song so much better, at that point in time he was fairly frail and you could hear it in his voice and it added to the song.

I actually read somewhere that Trent doesn't feel the song belongs to him anymore because Johnny did such an amazing job making it his own.
