Macedonia is a hellenic word and means "highlands" and macedonian means "tall person". Alexander is a hellenic word and means "protector of mankind". They spoke hellenic, they had hellenic names, they believed in the hellenic religion, they participated in the olympics like all hellenes.
But they were not hellenes, they were slavs that invaded balkans at 600 AD, more than a millenium after macedonia existed.

(2) There is not a single historian outside the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and its diaspora that would give a different answer. Non-FYROM Slav historians respect themselves and their degrees. As for the FYROM "historians" and their diaspora, I would suggest that they take a good look and study very carefully the WHOLE book The Peloponnesian War authored by Thucydides.

Alexander was the champion of Greek culture and because of him Macedonians spoke Greek. In fact there is not a single Macedonian original word that has survived the erosion of the centuries.

@boyko77 the ancient macedonians were always ethnically hellenic. the ancient macedonians originated from southern hellas in argos which is in the hellenic province of pelopponissos. the name of the ancient macedonian dynasty was called the argead - from the name argos. an example: alexandros was macedonian and leonidas was spartan and both were hellenes.

True, but the ancient greeks have also ceased to exist as a true seperate ethnic group ever since the great conquests by Rome, the slavic invsions, the byzantine empire, and finally the invasion by the turks. All of these influences have basically diluted most of the true ancient greek ethnicity. The same thing can be said with southern slavs. We are all mixed, the only thing that stays similar to the past is language. By your logic, Most of todays greeks are not decendants of the ancients.

Yes but we have to give the Greeks some credit that to this day they still keep the language that evolved from Athenian thanks to Alexander, and trough all that mixing they still prevail as a separate identity which gave the world Christianity, Byzantine architecture and culture which Bulgarians copied and incorporated. The Slavs prevailed with their numbers, toughness and ability to survive and outbreed any invader but were not able to assimilate the Greeks.

I suppose i can agree with that. The hellenic minded people may have won the culture war with the slavs, but they lost the battle against the romans and the byzantine empire, these conquests seriously changed the ancient greek identity. Hell, the mix of Hellenic peoples began to think of themselves as the new roman empire, it was only after the end of rome and byzantium, that they decided to adopt the Greek identity, it seems the identity is one of Convenience and not one of authenticity.

Current Macedonian people and territory belong to Bulgaria. Ancient Macedonians lived on this territory, it was greek, BUT, today's macedonians have no connection with them.

If I'm not a real Serbian then there is no Serbia. Don't get this personal! I also have many Greek friends but that has nothing to do with my views on history. I informed myself from many resources and came to conclusion that those who called themself Greek in the first place were Athenians. Spartans were not greek. they were a totally different tribe. Maybe they belived in same Gods but that prooves nothing. In that manner every Orthodox Christian is one nation. Bullshit.

Sparta and Macedonia were all different nations and claiming that they were Greek is ridiculous because Athenians themself called king Filip a barbarian. Lasandros conquered later Athen just like most nations of ancient world. But that is the past and that's my way of view. And we don't have to be enemies because of that. I respect today's Greeks and everything else except history is the same in our way of thinking.

Second...as about Spartans and Makedonians they were both Greek kingdoms at ancient times and not foreign nations. They speaked the same language, they had the same Greek based currency full with Greek letters and they also participated in the ancient Olympic games which was only for Greeks and not for foreigners
