It's great to hear this sung by a counter-tenor. I think this is how Handel would have wanted it. I've heard this many times but usually in contralto.
According to his own unreserved statement(in an interview for Russian TV and in German and in his own hometown) he separated from his wife and daughter in 2009
I heard him sing this at Zankel Hall the day before yesterday, with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
He was dressed in plain, black clothes. Minimal mannerisms. But it was beautiful to the point of eerie. That voice, you can't believe it's coming out of a human being. And such exquisite feeling. Just other-worldly
Afterwards I ran into him by accident as we were all trying to cross the street. I took the courage to say hi. He couldn't have been more gracious. He even agreed to a picture.
Well . he's been in a terrible battle, and has jumped out of the window of the palace and is now presumed dead. He has been wandering around for a while now, and this is quite badly served.
i don't find a reason for using these clothes and these modern scenario: all seems fake and absurd; scholl sings wonderful but the director seems crazy and kills haendel
Hey, Andreas lookin' pretty fly in that get up. (Sorry for the shallowness of the comment. It's pretty much a given that his voice and singing are stupendous.)
Worse: They set Giulio Cesare in 1930s Hollywood with spotlights shining into my eyes in the audience. Cleopatra was a sleezy film star. The male lead was played by a huge women in a red uniform who arrived on stage on a carboard tank. The countertenor who played Ptolemy could not sing. A sweet girl played the enraged son seeking vengence.
I'm laughing as I read your comment. Sounds so-o-o ba-a-ad that it's actually funny, at least the way that YOU put it. Do you find it so in hindsight? Or I'm thinking you must be so peeved that you wasted your money that it's outragious and not funny! You know it COULD be due to budget cuts. No lighting staff, overpriced Cleopatra replaced by cheap substitute, low budget tank made by kids in arts and crafts, Ptolemy that can sing doesn't fit budget, and sweet girl broke, accepts any price.
I am buying this DVD as an necessary antidote to the horrific, live production I saw at Opera Colorado where the casting for the male roles, the setting, staging, and direction were absolute disasters. What are these "professionals" thinking???
i have the dvd of the opera and it is all simply wonderful cant fault it,all the perfomers are amazing...

@bernard1422 That's very sad to hear - the life of even such a grounded and intelligent star must put a terrible strain on marriage.

I would like to propose Scholl's nickname to be the crybaby, because he sings the crying arias so well!
elias12186 3 years ago
:-) I have no idea what his epithet should be or will be, but I propose "Voce del Angelo," as a sort of balance to Ruffo's "Voce del Leone."
