  • @RussX5Z Sorry....you're 31, not 21. No offence meant!

  • @RussX5Z: Thanks for your comments. Moving on is so tough, even now. SHE is still so deeply embedded in my heart and soul that if I tried to be with someone else, I would look at this new woman and still see HER. It would be a never-ending comparison....that just doesn't work for either person. Also, I wanted to compliment you on a statement you made....you may be only 21 but you've already learned a critical life lesson...there are friends and there are REAL friends!

  • @ efi2075 & krwescott: Thanks for your support and kind words. The music was wonderful back then. I really think (at least musically) that we were fortunate to have been teenagers or young adults at that particular time. The lyrics of songs actually said something, told a story of unending love or heartbreak, made you smile, cry, and/or think. Even though it makes my heart ache, I still listen to songs I associate with HER, or oddly enough...Vietnam.

  • ron71552, Hang in there, We are all pretty much in the same boat..

  • Gosh,, she looks so uncomfortable without her drums......

  • I had to split up my comment and it got mixed up. I started by saying that this song is from a time when all things seemed possible, all mistakes were fixable, and life stretched all the way to a golden horizon. I would marry the one true love of my life and we would live in bliss. But in 1972, when I got out of the Army, I walked away from her. Not a day in my life has gone by without thinking of her. The pain I feel is unbearable now. (read this, then the third part, then the middle.)

  • @ron71552 I'm very sorry to hear about that. Even though I've never had a girlfriend in my life and I'm 31. But I do know what loneliness feels like because I hardly have any REAL friends. I know I'm about half your age but have you thought about moving on? Like dating other women and re-marrying?

  • @ron71552 This world esp. America sucks nowadays because its so self centered up its ASS but we only can make the best of the best and just come to a conclusion and accept our mistakes. I HAD TO accept it because I had no choice.

  • I'm nearly 60, alone, depressed, and not a day of my life has gone by since 1974 when I don't kick myself for being so stupid. When I hear this song, it always carries the question of what could have been, and it's like a knife straight to my heart.

  • @ron71552 we all make mistakes in life.fortunately we still have music.

  • Within a couple of months I ended up meeting and then getting engaged to a girl with whom I had very little in common. My sweetheart moved on with her life, met a guy who makes a heck of a lot more than I do, and she has beautiful kids and grandchildren, a big, gorgeous house, and a large, active extended family.

  • i'm not sure why this song reminds me of downey fabric softener and my ex sister in law unless it's because i used to hear the song at her home or something when i was a child

  • The voice of an angel, who else sounds as good now?

  • example

  • We sang this at our HS graduation in the 70s, it was very sentimental, first singing very beautiful and heart pulling song, and then knowing that so many of us were going in separate directions.

  • as a devoted fan of metal/punk/hard rock/grunge, I can only say this song puts a lump in my throat everytime.

  • thats nice - thumbs up to you !

  • i thought the lead singer was black before i saw this

  • Man what a Hot body ... shame it all went away ... Still love the voice ... just a memery now RIP Karen ... listen to you daily

  • doubt it. Not that it even matters

THIS IS THE OFFICIAL RECORDING - PERIOD.

  • I have listened to them since 1971. Probably have logged 10,000X more listening hours than you.

I know every note of this official recording. Not that it matters, but how do you suppose they accomplished the backing vocals? This IS the official recording. Other parties can feel free to chime in...just to put your sorry azz in place.

Because you obviously cannot identify the official recording.

  • @myrtlebox I know because I was there.

  • she was thin and skinny then D:

  • @JANECHENGETS100 No, she was perfect then. The problems came later

  • When I was a teenager it wasn't cool to like this song - had to be Allmans or Hendrix or something heavier. But secretly I really did like it, and now I see why.

  • parachuteboi: She was a singer, this was not disco, she did not have to move around.

  • Araido1968 They fooled you did'nt they. That is no lipsink. She was singing right there. She could sing so perfect, it sounded exactly like the recording. That is what the Carpenters were noted for. Yes, the seventies was good times, but it was not cheesy.

You don't know what your talking about.

There were body mikes then. Here they used overhead mikes.

  • @75daytime Sorry to rain on your parade.

This IS THE REAL DEAL. I know all of their official recordings note for note. This IS a lip sync.

Not that it really matters - The only time I EVER heard a false note from Karen was on the Johnny Carson show. I'm fond of that particular live performance because it showed that she WAS HUMAN.

  • Sorry to let you know you haven't a clue what your talking about.

You may know the recordings, but not very well.

That is absolutely Karen singing right there!

  • @snicker960 Yes - it's Karen. Lip sync'd. Not sure why you are adament about being wrong.

I'm not even guessing. If I had 0.0000001% worry about being wrong, I would never have posted this.

Again - you are mistaken. I have no hidden agenda. You are simply wrong.

  • @myrtlebox Sorry, Your Wrong!

  • omg she moves around so much when singing. she couldnt stay still lol

  • amazing song.. and a nice lipsink of their own stuff.. notice NO microphones.. for anyone not even body mics (which i dont think even existed at this time) the instruments were being played to a degree i think.. drums, tambos etc.. still they are the carpenters and they did sing it.. I miss the innocence and cheesiness of the 70s.. good times..

  • I can't see how anyone could "dislike" such a beautiful song. What is wrong with people????

  • Its amazing that she is buried in the same cemetery my dad is buried.

  • @ebutsunshine I thought this vid used to have a different live track and now it has a different one. Maybe I'm wrong...

  • My wife and I were married in August of 1970. This wasn't in our wedding- that was In My Life and Here, There, and Everywhere by those lads from Liverpool- but I will always associate this song with that year. We're still together and always will be. Hard to believe it's going on 42 years ago. Short ride, this one.

  • @mollyipowers God bless you both!

  • 1408.....

  • @ramfuel21 I remembered my sister who was saw 1408 and was scared so in the middle of the night i set up her radio for this song, scared the hell out of her. lol

  • @ramfuel21 i just saw that movie today and you gave me a smile cuz you knew (: lol

  • How could someone literally dislike this??

  • jenny sinclair can sing this song that it sounds like Karen

  • this song and close to you are the 2 songs that got the carpenters on the map.....then they strung together ooodles of hits after...

  • Love Karen... but that drummer's getup is also... memorable!

  • this was the performance that a reporter referred to karen as 'wide hips with a giant voice'. karen read it and developed her eating disorder. the sick and tgwisted media destroyed this beautiful talent

  • @theDeckisStacked yes-she was a doll-with those big brown eyes. Whatta voice....

  • Karen was unique. There's no other with such velvet and soft voice. I'm sure she's cheering up in heaven. All the angels are dancing with her songs. RIP my dear. You'll always be the no one for me.

  • she had such a beautiful voice

  • she looks beautiful here......but the drummer.....now i know what happened to the seat covers from my 1958 rambler...the drummer is wearing them

  • Karen sings from a broken sad heart. She never had the love she had sung about. No man wants just a mediocre woman and Karen thought she was just that. The saying goes she has a great personality and most guys will say yea but, does she have looks. Karen beats out most women with her heart. I love you Karen too bad there was not a man who would see beyond the looks although I love the average looking woman with a loving heart. R.I.P.

  • @retrodaze Karen was beautiful inside and out. Most guys I'ved talked know she was a really attractive woman. She dated Mark Harmon.

  • This version is the original studio version that was polished a little, and attached to this video piece. This version is even more beautful than the first release. It was okay to lip synch. I just listened to the accapella version with Karen's vocals, and yet again I long to hear more of Karen's unique gift.

  • Karen is great and the drummer on this video really, plays well.

  • What a sin that this healthy-looking if a little slim young woman looked in her mirror and saw a fat slob. KC lives on 4ever.

  • The best voice on the planet. Her legacy lives on.

  • Karen has love from the hood too! A lot of bra ans sisters love her music too! Music is universal and she was a shinning star! RIP! We love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @djcoolcliff

well said! Great talent is for everyone regardles of race or color!!!

  • @djcoolcliff Well said man. Thanks for saying it. Those are the kind of statements that bring harmony in the world. She was singing from the heart, the way it's supposed to be!! Peace-

  • so amazing... so sad and beautiful

  • I would like to put this one out there & roll the Dice for the world to read & see what they think of this idea. I would Love more than anything in the world for Richard Carpenter to get the Carpenter band together (including Herb, & Burt who were a Big part) & do a tribute show for Karen &Tony. Why not one more time, for the good old times. Everyones getting older each & every year, I really believe in my heart that this would be special & Karen could be included on a Big Screen with Pictures

  • This song has always been special and the very best versions have been Karen's and Jack Jones' I was very sad when she died.

  • Karen Carpenter is one of the few female vocalists to be given the gift from God of having perfect pitch. Given her hauntingly beautiful vocals with Richard's mastery of the recording studio and his own backing vocals, being the vase to her rose so to speak. The two of them created a sound that is unique in it's timbre and its cleanness. Thank you, Richard for sharing your sister with us for so many years.

  • I remember the clarity and the emotion she put into all the songs she sang. singers today could learn a thing or two from Karen. I wonder what Richard is doing now

  • Classic - this song was written for an american mortgage companies' tv ad. and was their big break. Note Karen doesn't need to pause for breath in between 'we've only just begun' and 'to live' unlike so many cover artists.

  • lets stop remembering her for dying of that horrible disease lets remember her for having the most beautiful voice and person

  • RIP karen , the angels had to step aside for you.

  • Greatest female singer ever, any genre!

  • is it my imagination or is part of Karen's body edited (blurred) out? Why?

  • @antiguabayful i think you're right, it looks like the around her crotch area and just north is blurred out on any shots that include that area? camel toe? doubt it , but quite strange

  • she is SOOO beautiful!!.. :).. RIP Karen Carpenter..

  • I'm 47,,from louisville,Ky,and what you are seeing here is Karen in her prime. The TV specials were just starting to come on hard,,the hits were going to come slamming one after the other. She is smoking hot,,girl-next-door body.Even though she is ad-libing this song,,she is still one smoking hot girl. She had more tallent than most of us can comprehend.i really doubt she ever found a man to settle down with and connect with her on her level. I'm in the same position in 2011,,I feel her pain.

  • @singlejeff69 Karen had the most amazing voice. Crystal clear and so beautiful. We are the same age and remember these times of great music. I am also a fan of another lovely lady who sadly died of anorexia, one Lena Zavaroni. God bless them both.

  • Makeup = No thanks dry is fine.

  • Thank you Karen for the love that has filled my heart and my marriage with love for over 35 years, I so miss you and your beautiful soul.

  • Pure voice Karen Carpenter, my mother use to listen to her all the time. And then one day i was the movie 1403 and knew i heard the song just did not know what the name was. bring back memorys lot of them, it was on 8 track "love those DAYS".

  • This is not my kind of music, but the music geek in me can't seem to stay away from the Carpenters (and this song in particular). This is what happens when top-notch songwriting and masterful production meets outstanding musicianship and flawless vocals! What's not to love?

  • @xylowave Well said...This is really good music! Some may disparage this era, but there is a lot of fantastic music from then..Keep on keepin' on..

  • @xylowave ...Well put, and I agree!

  • Nobody lasts more than an hour...

  • @averyfatsnail12 LOL god damnit I'm watching the movie right now

  • She looked happy and healthy here. How I wish she was still with us :(

  • Almost everyones wedding song in the early 70's. What a beautiful voice, what a waste of talent. RIP Karen, you brought joy to so many.

  • @1951590 she looks so beautiful here! and yes a waste of talent it was. i just wish she was around alot longer so i couldve seen her sing! she's in my opinion the best female singer ever! there will NEVER be another karen carpenter or anyone else for that matter that will even come close to matching her vocals. keep singing for gods choir girl we still miss you down here!

  • That voice just resonates. Beautiful

  • @ sharpiibish

are you talking about your mother or your sister? By the way on the drums there's your father. Loser

  • Beautiful voice!

  • so many road to choose

  • she looked great here.

  • How is it possible for Karen to evoke such feeling so many decades later? She sings and smiles like the great professional she was but her eyes seem so sad.

  • Karen looks perfect here.

  • I only know this from the movie 1408

  • @FootyTegs i love how so many people know that moooovieeee cuz i thought it was just an unknown movie :|

  • as i was scanning the comments, i noticed that someone had the "balls" to compare beyonce to karen carpenter....hey, im not hating....but...."you GOT to be fuckin' kidding me".....i mean, beyonce is talented...but, thats like comparing a hot dog (with the works)..lol..to prime rib....carpenter is a "legend"....no offense..but..give me a break..LOL...

  • how in God's name could anyone dislike this???? Karen Carpenter was so talented and sung beautifully. Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera and Lady Gaga....EAT YOUR HEARTS OUT....

  • @rhahnda76 True, was going to comment but you said it for me, cheers from TX

  • @SpaceAceTX cheers to you too..from houston texas!!!!!!!

  • Andy Williams version is better....her version is alright.

  • karens voice is so beautiful and sweet i just keep replaying the carpenters gold dvd love you karen RIP KAREN

  • we love you Karen...it's been 27years since and I am still listens to your music

  • 1408...

  • ..there's meaning behind the sweet, too..

  • she is so sweet.and ppl who dumb who dont like this

  • No one could sing a sad and sombre song the way that Karen could, but her music was uplifting as well, in a unique way.

  • I think she already looks too thin :( What a tragedy.

  • I coulda had a V8!

  • I feel old now...I remember when these songs were top hits on the radio.

  • My G*d, this women really means it. Pop music has fallen so far since the 70's.....I think in 2011 we must be near the bottom for Pop music and associated culture. Sorry to sound so negative but in this case I'm afraid it's just true... : )

  • 28 years ago today she left us.

  • A stunning talent, and a very troubled girl. Please love your children unconditionally...their future depends on it.

  • Karen was NOT a waste. She accomplished much in her life, lived it as fully as she was capable of, and is revered and remembered the world over. she didn't abuse drugs, sleep around, or cause problems. She got the most out of every inch of her talent. Not a waste.

  • What a beautiful voice, every time I hear a Carpenter song. Sure brings back a lot of memories. Karen, is sadly missed and no can compare with her voice. Beautiful voice.

  • best ever, a not to be compared voice!

  • If she would have met a real man she would be alive today. When you find true love nothing else matters in the world. You will no longer care about the petty things of life. She never found love in life. May she r.i.p.

  • Karen is Kinda like Britney Spears or Madonna♥

  • She was real hot! too bad for her illness :(

  • holy!!!!! 1408???????

  • her body wasn't that bad nor fat! in fact she could have worn sexy clothes with her body now! ika naman kasi karen nagdiet ka pa!

  • Damn..... Couldn't you just stayed w/ us just a little longer, Karen?

  • maybe theres just a fewer artist back than there is now that were grew too tired of listening to all these new songs coming time to time we got not much time to appreciate them

  • geez she is great. and so is richard. I did not grow up in this era and I was not even born till 75, but I can spot talent and the carpenters have bucket loads of it. I love this song.

  • cant help but noticing the drummer in the background, he kicks ass!

  • @triplesaber Damn straight. And he's rocking the top 'tache and golf pants at the same time, too. Dude was multi-tasking before there was multi-tasking. That's a lot for one man to think about. Kudos to him.

  • Never before, and never again will there be such a raw, natural talent. The most beautiful voice of any performer ever. RIP

  • She is so beautiful. I wish I wasn't born in the 90s.

  • Her voice is sooo dreamy. I'm glad to have been a kid when all this music was coming out. Its what runs through my mind all the time now that I'm an adult. None of that rap or hip hop junk. I can't understand how people can even listen to that stuff.

  • it was a waste she was a wonderful singer too talented for her too be gone soo soon just like micheal jackson.we have lost soo many talented people way too soon.

  • This song isn't timeless! It's certainly dated, but that doesn't take away from it's beauty.

  • 40 years and sometimes it hurts so bad to miss her.

  • @prdad007

life moves on. this said, this hurt is timeless as she is timeless

  • @divinityboy Yes, people often glorify the past, especially when circumstances in the present seem precarious, bleak, or out-of-balance. There's no need to take offense, though, nor to resort to name-calling to make your point.

  • This lady was definitely an angel who lost her way, and was taken from us.R.I.P

  • What a waste........another nice person lost for no reason at all.

  • I love and miss you Karen , love you to Richard

  • She looks so pretty in this video :)

  • It's really hard to believe it is her voice. I've always thought it was edited. I grew up listening to their songs up to now. Their songs are timeless.

  • And lets not forget the brilliant analog production of Herb Albert and Jerry Moss. These guys were brilliant all the way around. From the artists they chose to produce to the way they were recorded.

  • really my idol

  • What an amazing voice. Truly one of the most identifiable voices of the last century. Mariah, Beyonce et al - they can easily be confused. But not this one. Just amazing. Like rich maple syrup.

  • You don't get to hear this type of singing today. What a shame too. Peacefully helps your soul. too bad she had to leave us so soon. R.I.P. Karen

  • The song is called: Stay away from 1408.

  • iloveu mhal this song is only 4u 4a life time.

  • @jchawks08 Karen died of anorexia because of constantly hearing things like that

  • @sanderiano77 You state that like I didn't know that before typing what I typed. Did you think it was just an ironic comment from me? Retard. Lighten up. She died like 30+ years ago. Nobody Fucking Cares anymore.

  • @jchawks08 THE REASON WE FEEL THAT, IS BECAUSE THIS IS ONE OF MANY REASONS OUR YOUNG LADIES TODAY ARE PRESSURED FOR VANITY REASONS WHICH SICKENS ME TO DEATH!!!! ATTITUDES THAT SAY A WOMAN WHO IS A SIZE 9 FAT???? BEYONCE HAS AN ASS THE SIZE OF TEXAS, AND YOU THINK THIS GIRL WAS FAT??? YOUR HEAD IS FAT, IDIOT.....SHE HOLDS A PLACE IN HISTORY REALLY..DO YOU THINK YOU WILL HEAR BEYONCE 30 YEARS FROM NOW---I FUCKIN DOUBT IT!!! IDIOT....YOUR A RUDE ASSHOLE!!!

  • @jchawks08 THIS LADY IS DEAD BECAUSE OF STUPID MENTALITY THAT SAYS A WOMAN HAS TO BE A SIZE 3....BULLSHIT, I GOT NEWS FOR YOU JUNIOR--AN AVERAGE SIZE WOMAN IN AMERICA IS A 14!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RIP--KAREN....WE MISS YOU!!!

  • @jchawks08 Wake up because you are one very stupid and ignorant human being . Look at all the videos of this precious woman and read all the beautiful comments from all the people in world that miss her such beautiful voice .... you have insulted the memory of one of the greatest singers male or female to ever live ... have some integrity and do some soul searching and be big enough to write an apology and then I might find just a small amount of integrity for you !

  • @jchawks08 Troll..... go away..... Everyone jchawks08 wants attention. He understand how she died and he want to rile people up. That's called a Troll. He is very sick and sad with no hobbies and no friends. Just flag it as spam and enjoy Ms. Carperter's beautiful angelic voice. If you see another Troll, call them as you see them.
