My former trainer literally hit his gloves to pieces when he worked the pads (ofcourse he was wearing the gloves). And these were brand new gloves, literally.

no he is showing self defence techniques. Most martial arts dojo's teach self defence as a main target to their students. Fighting on the mat or in the ring isnt his dojos main focus.

No, Elbow in not allowed in kickboxing. Under the K-1 rules you can use clinch, knees and low kicks but elbow strikes are forbidden. Elbow strike is a muay thai technique. This video looks like a combination of karate, muay thai and kickboxing. I wouldn't say that this is kickboxing in it's purest form.
