I love your tip about wiping the joint with a rag with transmission fluid on it. I never heard of that before and I'm going to try it with the job I am doing this week. I have used the bread trick before and it works perfectly just as you say. I hear there is a capsule available that does the same thing but I haven't seen one yet.
@TimThePlumber001 - Which joints are you referring to? Tinning the pipe and fittings before soldering is NOT necessary and could be dangerous. Sometimes you'll get into a situations where you need to heat up a previously soldered joint and remove a fitting and put it back on for whatever reason, and those are the times where you most risk getting hot solder and flux on you. There's no reason to tin clean pipes and fittings. I've been hit with hot solder, even in the eye once. It's not fun.
As for copper pipe grades, different cities have different codes. In Miami Fl, where I grew up, it's warm and type M pipe is fine. There's no risk of pipes freezing. In colder climates, type L is recommended and perhaps even required, even insulation of pipes may be required, especially on pipes outdoors. I've never seen type K used in plumbing, maybe in extremely cold areas. As for pex - no. No matter the cost, once you explain to customers how copper is far superior they understand the cost.

@0466rymaspencer rule of thumb...1/2" pipe 1/2" of solder 3/4 pipe 3/4" solder...and so on....just a general rule though its a feel thing when your trying to solder upwards. with the joint soldering upwards thats when it get tricky for runs.

Interesting...I own a plumbing company here in Toronto...Type m and type L pipe is for residential plumbing here...Its just a matter of the pipes "wall thickness"... L being thicker, therefore last longer !
