At the Toronto International Film Festival they played this on the big screen, with the 70mm film. Doesn't get much better than that. I loved the film.
@scottabreitbarth The Middle East episode of Top Gear had a ride through the desert, and I thought, if you guys don't use this music, something's gone wrong. They used it.
My soundtrack album keeps track of the various themes in this overture - it starts with the so-called "Savage" theme at 0:16, then shifts over to the "Quest" theme at 0:39, and then the "Arabia" theme at 2:42. After listening for a while, I noticed that at 4:01 all three of those themes are played AT THE SAME TIME and they fit perfectly together! Maruice Jarre - what a composer!
Taking nothing away from the brilliance of both pieces of music, I've always found the main theme here to be remarkably similar to the song 'Born Free'.
@Birdwatchingboy Chances are. Part of the melodic main line in both are quite similar but the harmonies and scales therein are different altogether ensuing a rather different spirit. But well there might be something else, who knows
I think I like watching the movie most when it's frigid cold outside. I sit in my nice warm basement near my coal stove and just lose all knowlegde and concern of time, as I place my consious thought into the movie for the next three or so hours.
One of those movies where every frame is a portrait and every sound a symphony.
I try not to have a "favorite" movie. Just a whole bunch of favorites as my #1. And Lawrence of Arabia is one of them.
@TurkFascists vive l'empire austro hongrois qui a battu les turks , l'europe quand elle se réveille ça fait mal mec alors ton empire de mes couilles tu te le bouffe et fais pas chier
This movie is not good. It's perfect. Technically, dramatically, musically. With rare exceptions, you won't have films like this. You need a brilliant director like David Lean (talk about directing extras!), a truly inspired composer and a story good enough for all mankind. It's not that is impossible to make a film like this one. The problem is that such talent comes very rarely, especially in these impatient times.
@Kurozuguchi I think the fact that before 1980's was prior to American blockbusters completely dominating the uk and other film markets and @LegoCritic the two films you mentioned as works of art were japanese. This draws me to the conclusion that the only countries that appreciate artistic movies are small first world islands off the coasts of a massive continent.
Seriously though Americas domination of the movie industry is causing shunning of the creation of slower-paced artistic movies.
America has acted immorally and shortsightedly at times. We have 60 years of reckless oil interventionism to answer for. The damage we've caused can't be ignored or justified.
But we did NOT deserve to be attacked on 9/11. We were right to be angry, and we've been righteous in punishing those responsible. When USA leaves Afghanistan, we all need to just apologize, forgive, grow up, and let it go. Let's all stop pointing fingers, leave each other alone, and just move on. Is that so much to ask?
@shaheen5155 "orange, sugar, coffee, sofa, satin, and algebra" are Arabic-derived words in English, and those goods were all introduced to the west by the Arabic Empire in its prime.
How many Arabic words are from English? Car, computer, telephone, television. You're welcome for those. Bank's another one. Loanwords aren't really relevant to the discussion.
@Jakob1951 I'm half joking. Lawrence of Arabia makes a strong, cultural relativist point that neither British nor Arab culture is morally superior to the other. I would say that the Arabs are no less "wicked, depraved, violent and corrupt" than the British Empire at its peak, with its centuries of destructive, reckless imperialism. Apply the same thorough scrutiny to both cultures' history and tell me whether you still believe Arabs to be such "wicked, depraved, violent, and corrupt" people.
@scharb Since Christianity has separated Church and state, their wickedness has somewhat diminished. But Islam, what most Arabs subscribe to, makes no such division. And their goal has always been to Islamisize the world any way they can; mostly through terror and murder. The BritSHITS have worked hand in hand with the Arabs; especially in Israel. Therefore, they are also aptly described as SAVAGES - with a thin veneer of stiff upper lip civility. The Arabs, are in-your-face BRUTES!
@Jakob1951 Have you ever even met a Muslim, in person? You make these people out to be subhuman monsters! You're seething with hatred. Listen to yourself.
@scharb Yes I have. I'm not suggesting they're all bad. But, remember what Arafat told a U.S. reporter when Arafat was caught in a contradiction:"We Arabs have a tradition. We lie". When you look at the Arab media (run by Arabs), it is full of lies from one end to the other; and no protests from their bretheren. Similarly for the terror and murder committed by a minority of them. Also, many of their clerics routinely call for the destruction of the Infidels without a wimper of protest.
@TheEazyDuzIt95 And what nation is that? If you're suggesting that OIL is the raison d'etre of nations then you're wrong. Oil is a source of energy for now, soon to go the way of the dinosaur. And then Arabia and other oil producers will vanish into flatulant oblivion!

@shaheen5155 I'm sure you're not a native English writer and that is not what I am protesting. It is your UNBELIEVABLE ASSumption that the West is the cause of Arab violence! That's like saying the murder VICTIM is responsible for the crime! A minority of Arab Moslems are running around the world following the dictates of Mohammed (destroying the unwilling infidels), and when these infidels DEFEND themselves, they're accused of starting wars! @Jakob1951 Uh, check again. There are some ugly skeletons in our closet. Google "American intervention in the Middle East" and what we did in Iran, especially. The history makes me cringe, because in acting selfishly we violated our most cherished principles. We ally with dictators, then we gladly help them repress democracy. We've made lots of mistakes and are partially responsible for the pre-911 of the Middle East. Their hatred didn't pop up out of nowhere. You're literate. Read.
@scharb Supporting the LESSER OF 2 EVILS is par for the course in this world. The Sha was wicked in his own way, but Khomeini was MUCH WORSE. You act as consistently as possible with what is available. When Iran and Iraq were at war. we should have supported both of them so that they could destroy each other!! Joan Peters (FROM TIME IMMEMORIAL) said that even if the US & Israel didn't exist, 9/11 would still have happened! Despite the faux pas of the US, they are far better than most.
@Jakob1951 No, I meant Operation Ajax. 1953. The first Iranian Revolution, over the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. The Shah was overthrown and replaced with a western-style Parliament, under the respectable Prime Minister Mossadegh. UK got US involved, the CIA overthrew a democracy and replaced it with the old dictator. We got some sweet oil kickbacks off the whole deal.
Real despicable stuff. Short-sighted and selfish. 60 years later, they're a theocracy that hates us.
@scharb LOL!!! That's not why they hate the West. We are INFIDELS. That's why. You're drifting from the point. I originally implied that Arabs are SAVAGES & BRUTES. Yes the BRITS are & were also. But, they're not running around blowing themselves and others up. Where they put their imperialist foot down, they sowed a measure of CIVILITY. The same cannot be said for the Arabs, at least post-Mohammed.
@commentguy743 Maybe not. The guy knows what he's doing, but I think he and Remote Control Productions have helped in homogenising modern film scores. There's not much choice.
This movie, and the soundtrack, everything about it, are so epic! This is much like Ben-Hur in its ability to bring us back to the beginning of life on this rock for all of us: the Middle East. I mean, how long does the war between people have to go on? White versus brown, Christian versus Muslim... Britney fans versus Gaga fans. Such a great movie. And, yeah... blood and guts is cool too... but, damn.
@McLarenMercedes Hans Zimmer isn't generic, hes just different and modern, just a different style. A lot of what he does is unique and experimental, and I prise him for that.
Such a great musical composition !!! and Maurice JARRE is a great musician, composer. It's always a very emotional moment for me each time I listen to the wonderful music of "Lawrence of Arabia" . No other comment , except it's a masterpiece of music !
I was born in 1953 and living though this "period' our parents had the terriffic movies of the 30's 40's and 50's so to "keep it going certain producers put out consistant quality year after year during the 60's and early 70's. The population didn't seem to care so movies, music, architecture, oh well education everything just "went south... never to be seen again... so sad!
"Sherif Ali, so long as the Arabs fight tribe against tribe, so long will they be a little people, a silly people, greedy, barbarous, and cruel, as you are."
I couldn't whistle until I was 19. When I was 19 I practiced everday for a month. I wanted to learn the theme to Lawerence of Arabia and it was the thing I praticed everyday for a month. I held out the notes and could glissando between them and I did so until my simple whistle became as grand as the orchestra. Then I was satisified. My walks to the college were...epic.
Solo tengo 33 años y aprendi a apreciar lo valioso del cine cuando no solo entretiene, sino tambien enseña. Estoy muy contenta xq mi papi izo que viera esta movie la primera vez.
this revolt contribted to the destruction of the Islamic Khaliphate whos capital was
in Istanbul and that resluted in the fragmentation of the Islamic world, the creation of Israel and the displacement of the Palestinians, and then the wars in Iraq Afganistan, This movie should be re-released for it's relevance to the conflicts that are affecting the entire world today.
I came to look for this because I read Muse's USoE had influences from this, Queen and of course Chopin... and it is absolutely true.. this is simply amazing, truly great music.
AGREED! And wow what a score. I have this movie on VHS, two cassettes, but no longer have a cassette player, just DVD. Thanks for uploading this gorgeous music.
An Irishman playing the most important Englishman on earth! It's fantastic! His role during the Arab revolt was vital, for the survival of England! It's an epic story of true sacrifice!
Apologies, I meant the film was played by an Irishman ... obviously T E Lawrence is English. But isn't it a little ironic how an Irishman was selected (Irish being subjected to 500 yrs of control by the Crown) to portray an English who helped the Arabs (who were eventually controlled by the Crown and Elysee Palace).
As an Irishman I'd give my right tooth to travel back in time and assist in this marvel!
I know it's not the Original Soundtrack, but I love the arrangement and intensity of the recording...do you know the conductor or recording this is taken from??
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
The music score is absolutely beautiful! It is magnificent. I really love it and it remains my all time favorite music score and the film is indeed the greatest film of all time! Really love the film and the music! Beautiful movie! Peter O'toole is the best actor because he is so good in the role of T.E. Lawrence. He his very convincing! A magnificent actor and the greatest film ever! T.E. Lawrence was one special hero to England. Heroes like these don't come around in history too often!
What does your Birthday has to do with this absolute great movie? Are you saying "older" movies are no good? Do yourself a favor and rent or buy some good movies. Google up "Alfred Hitchcock" and start watching..and get a film ecucation..
Some films are simply meant as entertainment. Others, however, attain something more.
No one calls the Sistine Chapel "entertainment", but it is a brilliant work of art. Great films can also be genuine art. Many of them are both very entertaining AND works of art.
All I know is this:
I was born in 1980, and WITHOUT QUESTION the best films I have ever seen were made before I was born.
I did not always possess that opinion, but over time one can not help but see the truth.
Check out my rendition of Lawrence of Arabia!

John Williams, Howard Shore, Jerry Goldsmith, Hans Zimmer, Bernard Hermnan and now Maurice Jarre goes to my list of EPIC film composers :)

@commentguy743 Zimmer's a shite composer. He's got nothing on Williams, Barry, Jarre, Herrmann Rosza, North and Goldsmith.

@RogueRotting360 maybe yur right, but i still wouldn't cal him a shite composer
commentguy743 10 months ago
@commentguy743 Maybe not. The guy knows what he's doing, but I think he and Remote Control Productions have helped in homogenising modern film scores. There's not much choice.
RogueRotting360 10 months ago
@0007Laranja0007 James Newton Howard.

And, yeah... blood and guts is cool too... but, damn.

More like a couple of Hans Zimmer fanboys, praising their king of generic movie scores, and turning a deaf ear to the real masters.
McLarenMercedes 11 months ago
@McLarenMercedes Hans Zimmer isn't generic, hes just different and modern, just a different style. A lot of what he does is unique and experimental, and I prise him for that.

I was born in 1953 and living though this "period' our parents had the terriffic movies of the 30's 40's and 50's so to "keep it going certain producers put out consistant quality year after year during the 60's and early 70's. The population didn't seem to care so movies, music, architecture, oh well education everything just "went south... never to be seen again... so sad!

My walks to the college were...epic.

this revolt contribted to the destruction of the Islamic Khaliphate whos capital was
in Istanbul and that resluted in the fragmentation of the Islamic world, the creation of Israel and the displacement of the Palestinians, and then the wars in Iraq Afganistan, This movie should be re-released for it's relevance to the conflicts that are affecting the entire world today.

An Irishman playing the most important Englishman on earth! It's fantastic! His role during the Arab revolt was vital, for the survival of England! It's an epic story of true sacrifice!
I believe he's a prophet!
walkman001 2 years ago
Apologies, I meant the film was played by an Irishman ... obviously T E Lawrence is English. But isn't it a little ironic how an Irishman was selected (Irish being subjected to 500 yrs of control by the Crown) to portray an English who helped the Arabs (who were eventually controlled by the Crown and Elysee Palace).
As an Irishman I'd give my right tooth to travel back in time and assist in this marvel!

Thanks for your message -
I know it's not the Original Soundtrack, but I love the arrangement and intensity of the recording...do you know the conductor or recording this is taken from??
Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

What does your Birthday has to do with this absolute great movie? Are you saying "older" movies are no good? Do yourself a favor and rent or buy some good movies. Google up "Alfred Hitchcock" and start watching..and get a film ecucation..
Vinola1 2 years ago
WTF vinola1 & cutegrandma???
I didn't say the movie was bad, I just said I didn't like it that much but it is a good movie.
Do yourself a favor & watch:
-Hate (La haine)
-Cidade de Deus (city of god)
-Das Expirement
-Lola rennt (run lola run)
I don't say older movies are no good, I say I don't like them.
A film education?
I don't watch a movie like Ebert Roeper watches a movie, I watch a movie to be entertained, because it is entertainment!!!
ShinCefca 2 years ago
Some films are simply meant as entertainment. Others, however, attain something more.
No one calls the Sistine Chapel "entertainment", but it is a brilliant work of art. Great films can also be genuine art. Many of them are both very entertaining AND works of art.
All I know is this:
I was born in 1980, and WITHOUT QUESTION the best films I have ever seen were made before I was born.
I did not always possess that opinion, but over time one can not help but see the truth.
