Ever seen the King of Kong? Awesome flick that went beyond just the hardcore. You need colorful characters and a solid structure. The beginning (introductions), conflict, A big event and then a resolution for the end. with all the outspoken players, the many tournaments and the rivalries (not just between players but with Japan) I'd say there is a good story to be told. Heck, you could even throw in a theme of patriotism where rivals come together to the ultimate goal - beat Japan.
