I'd recommend Sad Piano Theme from Lunar. It plays after a few different events in the game. The most memorable moment to me is when the big villain's evil plan comes to fruition, erasing the main character's true love's memory, taking her from him emotionally and physically and the villain, Ghaleon, gains ultimate power. Afterwards, you fight Ghaleon and he utterly crushes you. After the characters wake up and recover from the battle this song plays. A few of the characters even give up hope.

@KHmixerX Some songs that i think that are sad(my opinion tough) xion's theme from kingdom hearts aerith's theme from ff7(i know overused but i did play the game in 97 when it came out and i had no idea that a main character would die the song really sold the moment and even now when i hear the song i still get a bit of that feeling that i got all those years ago) and sedge tree from shenmue,these are the only ones i remember right now.

Mother games are quite different from other RPGs. Most of them are about magic, quests, and saving kingdoms while the Mother games are about kids with psychic powers saving their home ("Mother" Earth) from some corrupt evil. And the style is simplistic so you might just be one of those ppl who can't get into something like the Mother series. :)

NO! Dont get me wrong! I liked Earthbound. That style was done before in Mother 1. Then games like Live a Live and Earthbound (duh), followed it.

Theres just something about Mother 3 gameplay that I just cant stand... I can actualy get over the first person battles... Perhaps it was because it lacked something that Earthbound had... I mean, after all, it was made 12 years after Earthbound... that's a lot of time...

#2 is a really emotive version of Hyrule's Castle theme from LttP. It gives some nostalgia.. I feel like "The Hyrule king is gone... What Hyrule used to be is gone, too.. Ganondorf was defeated.. Again, but.. All's gone.. Its fields.. Its mountains.. All.."

I think it was a good decision to turn that theme into such emotive theme. Because hearing it makes you think about Hyrule Castle, and that makes you remember the old Hyrule..
