People say that this was the greatest episode from the whole of smallville. I tip my hat off to that one. It was truley touching and you can literally feel lex's pain throughout the episode. That little piece of music stood out for me. I've remembered that episode since when it was first aired. Truely an amazing episode. Credit goes to the actors. Especially the child lex luthor, he was truley flawless and so believable. This episode was what really got me into smallville.
It's amazing how feel-good the end of the first scene is with Lionel giving Lex an inspirational story and wiping away his tears. Such a contrast for what we all know is to follow.
CatieCass, I think you need to rewatch SV more carefully and without bias. Lionel was an abusive father and husband. He left Lex to the mercy of his psychotic ex-mistress. He mind-raped Lex in order to cover up his own crimes which could have resulted in Lex ending up as a vegetable. Lionel poisoned Lex and later tried to trap him in his own body at the time when he (Lionel) was in prison and had cancer. And after all that Lionel is a good father? Do good fathers try to murder their children?
This has always been my favourite episode. It never fails to move me. The acting, the writing, the music, the use of colour and light, is all so beautiful.
@Nypopsicle18 What made this scene amazing was that Lionel always portrayed himself as a strong, powerful figure, who took pity on no one who showed weakness. However, this is one of the rare scene's in the show where we see Lionel talk to Lex as a father.
@GreySkies15 Couldn't agree more. My favourite Smallville episode by far. I especially love the ending when Lex tells Lionel the truth. The sheer emotion in that scene always touches something deep down.

Lionel saw baby Julian as his second chance to be a good father. He was never a BAD father, he just never showed the kind of love and compassion that he should have. John Glover himself even said that Lionel is NOT evil, he's just very misunderstood. He never told Lex "I love you" enough, and later when he becomes a completely good man, he tells Lex several times that he loves him and Lex refuses to listen. Lionel always loved Lex, he just was never good at showing it then...
They could never have had a wonderfull relationship.
Lionel beat Lex's mon up in front of Lex's eyes long before this. and there is several cases that shows the lack of fatherhood (Or humminity for that matter). Lionel is pure evil. and even when he do change and become a better man later in the serie. He gives his love and admiration to Clark instead of Lex.
Lex's is always the outstander who tries and tries but never gains anything. What he is going thru is enough to turn any one evil.
Watching this scene makes think that there was some innocence deep inside Lex. But there's nothing but darkness now that Lex has murdered his father and is desire for more power to dominate or destroy the world. Smallville will never be the same again with Lionel gone.
for some reason i thought clark actually came and no one else did. =\

By far the best episode of Smallville, maybe even of any TV Show, that I've ever seen.

John Glover was one of the few saving graces of SV. A trully brilliant actor.
