I think it's unacceptable that the marriage clerk didn't demand to see proof of love between those two men. Such otherwise private matters should be the business of my mommy government (I'm a social conservative, which means I'm for limited government, except when it comes to pretty much anything). To issue a marriage license a state typically requires that the parties be of legal age, that they not be related to each other within a certain degree of consanguinity, and that there be no existing impediment to the marriage, i.e. that they not already be married to someone else. Do you really want the government to decide whether you are really and truly "in love" in order to allow you get married?!
