  • Essar Steel has moved out of Atlantic Plaza. What are they up to.

  • a steelplant is not the way forward and you people should know that!

  • This is clearly anti PNM propaganda. Just wasted 35 seconds of my life. Steups......

  • How did you come to that conclusion?

  • The following are some excerpts from an article by Press Trust of India.

  • Moreover, In India, Mehra said, Essar Steel is waiting for allocation of mineral resources to give shape to its 6- MTPA project each in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Orissa.

  • Essar Steel was working on the viability of setting up steel mills in the two countries, but the size and the investment for the ventures were not finalised.

Essar Steel business Group CEO J Mehra said the proposed projects were in the "nascent stage" and on account of the waning steel demand globally the company has decided to "put them on hold".

  • Ruias-led Essar Steel has put on hold its proposed projects in Vietnam, and Trinidad and Tobago owing to the worldwide slump in demand amid the prevailing economic downturn.

"Looking at the prevailing economic downturn, we have postponed our overseas projects for the time being," Essar Group Chairman Shashi Ruia told PTI here.

  • The Hindu Business Line reported March 21 that Essar Group Chairman, Shashi Ruia, said Essar Steel Minnesota as well as other Essar project developments - was on hold until some clarity emerges on demand. His remarks were made at the inauguration of Essar Steels service center facility in Oragadam, in southern India.

  • The following news item from the May 8 2009

    Steel Business Briefing

Essar Steel of India's greenfield project in Minnesota has

been placed on hold due to the global downturn in demand,

    Steel Business Briefing understands.

Indian media outlets reported that Shashi Ruia, Essar Group

chairman, said overseas projects will be postponed.

  • Essar Steel of India has postponed this venture!

We still have a mangrove to save.

  • I congratulate you on your efforts and personally wish you all the best. However, I wouldn't waste my time trying to convince the people of Trinidad and Tobago to stand up for themselves since (we) are to blame for all the nonsense going on now. Trinbagonians faced the worst term by this gov't and yet still voted them back into power. Let us now take what we get... It is well deserved for our stupidity!!! (I don't nor will ever vote for this particular reason)

  • Thank you.

The fight to preserve our environment is a long term fight. Trinidadians are a bit laid back. However, I think they are finally waking up.

I really admire Wayne Kublalsingh, Peter Vine,Gary Aboud and others.

  • Lets hope the mangroves are saved in this beautiful part of the world. A great campaign!

  • For a lot more information check wordpress for

    rheamungal.

  • You're doing a really amazing job, i wish you good luck and i hope it succeeds. In different ways, everyone can help =)

  • Thank you. Please sign our petition.

  • Besides environmental, it sounds like it would cause much food shortage as well. I admire your drive to stand up to the bigwigs!

  • Dear krcart

    One of my favorite quotations

You must be the change you want to see in the world.

    Gandhi

I manage a lot of web sites and on weekends we have started going to the surrounding villages and educating the residents about the effects of the steel mill and the proposed port.

I join the team on the ground whenever I can. There are people like Dr. Wayne Kublalsingh and Dr. Peter Vine that work infinitely more than me.

We are all volunteers. We have no funding.

    Thank you.

  • No funding? Yeah right! Wonder who pays for the buses to transport your hired protestors and their meals.... Where was Kubla/Vine/Aboud when mangrooves were being removed to make way for MovieTowne and those fancy towers? Seems like development can only take place in Couva, Chaguanas, and West Moorings. We want to develope too.

  • Ha Ha......

Exactly where do you think the proposed Essar Steel plant is to be located?

  • You're running a great campaign protecting your own habitat. I'm hoping you succeed :)

  • Thank you Greenpeace online moderator.

  • Risks to Essar on this project are terminal and cannot be appraised or captured.

  • Thank you Wayne Kublalsingh. One person who really knows this project inside out.

  • Please save our mangroves

  • This says it all . Steel mill = DEATH!

  • What does Essar Steel Corporation of India want?

It wants to fill up 625 acres of fishing grounds, the seabed, where scores of fish breed and live, with concrete, to erect a port for the steel mill, who is to lose, and who is to gain?

  • What does Essar Steel Corporation of India want?

It wants as little public disturbance as possible to hide the raw atrocity of this deal for Trinidad and Tobago, a deal which will compromise our economy, our health, our lands, our mangrove and our marine resources and communities.

  • What does Essar Steel Corporation of India want?

It wants hundreds of thousands of tons of aggregate, which we will have to mine from the Northern Range, thereby compromising our forests, water and soil systems.

  • What does Essar Steel Corporation of India want?

It wants to emit 900,000 tons of carbon dioxide into our environment per year.

Save our mangroves. Say no to Essar Steel Group

  • What does Essar Steel Group of India want?

It wants a "corridor" through our mangroves to a port which will destroy portions of the last stretch of mangrove on the West Coast, which has supplied thousands of tons of protein stocks - crabs, fish, oyster, mook, shrimp, crayfish and conch - to our subsistence economy.

  • What does Essar Steel Group of India want?

It wants cheap and reliable supplies of our scarce water, a commodity which is fast becoming rare on the world market.

It wants trillions of cubic feet of our depleting gas to power its gas-guzzling steel mill.

It wants us to run gas lines for them, which we are doing.

It wants a reliable and cheap supply of electricity from our power grid to run its mill complex.

  • What does Essar Steel Corporation of India want?

It wants the cheap rental of high-value port lands, over five hundred acres, which was only three years ago allotted to former Caroni workers for farming (this land was taken back and rented to Essar).
