I think is a great lesson to less experienced musicians, frontmen, of how The Show Must Go On, how to give a great performance any way you can but never give any less. I love how Tim takes the BIG SOLO when it seems like Dave's voice had hit the wall. Seemed like Dave didn't have the voice lay down that tough vocal. Carter jumped all over Tim's energy and they drove the adrenaline through the roof. THEN Dave found his sweet spot and laid down the law! BRAVO DMB!!!
As music is up to interpretation and what Dave Matthews may have stated in his past, maybe this song is about him coming to faith. Maybe he realized that when he lost his life it, he gained it.
Maybe he was crying out to Christ knowing that his followers would shake their heads and wonder why.
Or maybe not. I think we have to get Dave's personal statements of what the piece means to him to understand what the piece means to him. As for my interpretations they are just blurried views.

Dave wrote this song. Anyone thinks this sounds like someone contemplating suicide? He looks exhausted here. Every DMB album is excellent and I especially like the changes in the songs on this album, raging to quiet and contemplative, but his intensity is concerning me as a fan. We don't want him to snap. This music is what I depended on for sanity for a long. I'm a fucking nut job.
@juliacochran2536 Are you serious? Dave isn't contemplating suicide, this about his sister and his sister's husband which shot her and then turned the gun on himself: "He was such a normal man, shake their heads and wonder why". Dave is also agnostic which is why he ties in the religion part.
I recently saw Phish for the first time. They're an excellent live band!Excellent! But those guys cannot go into the studio & write the kind of songs that DMB has over the years. The reason I'm comparing Phish to DMB is b/c Phish fans like to take cheap shots at DMB.The majority of them don't like DMB & think that Phish is somehow superior.Well, the day they start writing songs like Rhyme & Reason,Typical Situation,#41,Dreaming Tree, Squirm,Seek Up,&so on, then their fans can say all they want.
Love their teamwork at 3:06 when Tim realizes that Dave isnt gonna sing, he immediately breaks into the solo. Their timing is phenomenal and the fact that Dave decided to sing even though his voice was totally tired out is one of the many things I love about him ♥
@PurpleMicrowave Na girl the solo was planned, you don't just improvise a solo like that. It must be one of the best solos I've heard, I was thinking how i'd like it to go on and it did, amazing
@slashdelbarrio I'm not so sure about that. I've seen their planned solos and that didn't seem to be one of them. Either way, it was fucking brilliant. And I'm not a girl. :S
@slashdelbarrio or maybe it was planned and tim ALMOST forgot it :P cuz thats what it seems. im not saying the solo didnt take preparation, just saying, it almost seemed like he forgot
@chelmsfordresident - Dude. You can say shit, just don't say stupid shit. You may as well wear your 'I am an asshole' shirt all the time, instead of just on Tuesdays. Mmmkay?
Although he has a scratchy voice to begin with, he's usually not this hoarse... HE COULD reach those high notes like he used to, like some of you guys just mentioned he was probably sick or losing his voice... But as always Dave's the BOMB ;) !
Guys give him a break he was very sick during this performance.. And he wasn't singing in his falsetto at all, listen to the album, he in a way "pushes hi voice into a strong vocal" when your sick its VERY hard to do that..
Awesome. Cracked voice gives this performance more charachter....... Someone said this was about Dave's struggle with god, but i also get the feeling it's like a vent for all their anger following Leroi's passing.
I undestand that he can't hit those notes while singing .. but I think that's the way the song is supposed to sound. If you hear the studio version the strenght of the song itself goes well with the way he sings it.
also it doesn't help that they put this song towards the end of the set, so he'd already been singing all night anyway. having your voice worn out on top of being under the weather, yeah.
It seems to me that he is singing about the baphomet aka rain man. In one part it sounds like he's torn between following good or evil, possibly because he is in a disturbed state of mind...very confused!
Best DMB song ever written and I'm not exactly into this band.....Too bad the Fillmore East was torn down in '95........the beacon doesn't come close to it as avenue. Acoustics suck and if your in the balcony you're looking at ants on the stage.
Not only is Dave a great singer but his band has so much talent. One of the Best if not the Best Drummer around today, Great Electric Guitarist, the horns are awesome and they come together like no other band.

This is a very disturbing song.Judge for yourself:
When everything starts to fall
So fast that it terrifies you
When will you hit the wall?
Are you gonna learn to fly?
No one would believe it
Except for all the people
Watching as you fly away
Sounds like some funny shit to me!
