There's actually very little alternate picking involved, he almost primarily downstrokes in a technique sometimes called the buzzsaw, and he only hits the first two or three strings mostly. That doesn't mean you should only use power chords though.

However in some live versions they play the song extremely fast, faster than I'm capable of only downstroking, so he might be alternate picking, or he's just faster than me. Which would make sense.
