Ah the "Duchess", I think Gerald shaw should have called it the "empress" Although entirely different makes and sounds, I personally think The Odeon Compton stands well above the Blackpool Tower 's smaller Wurlitzer. That should get the Blackpool Fan Club jumping up and down. Donald MacKenzie as usual brings out the best in "The Duchess"
@commodoregeorge Its not a good instrument to play at all, and only sounds decent with some peices of music. DEFINETLY not a gd example of comptons work.
@commodoregeorge A FINISHED compton can sound very much like a Wurlitzer. Just..there werent that many comptons that were properly finished, the cinemas wanted them in yesterday, and they never got time to make them what John Compton wanted them to be.
Very entertaining playing! I love it! And to see that console come roaring out of the pit like that...with the beautiful illuminated surrounds...really striking! I wish the surrounds were something that would have caught on in the States as well!
thanx frnd in fact i am very much interested in all old instruments of different culture i am from india and lassical ann semi classical singer my self bro but i am interested in all kind of musical intruments i am a drummer aswell --- but pipe organ odeon compton instrument was new so plz do tell are there some treditional very old church organ in ur countary i would love to hear them i mean instruments which are very old , of ancient times plz reply dea
Its a pipe organ, where the pipes have been voiced to imitate instruments of the orchestra! Theres also bells, drums, whistles and horns etc for sound effects.
Just getting interested in theatre organs, and I've never seen anything like it! We have lost so very much in the way of style and class in such a short time. Will make sure I get to a recital at the Odeon. Fantastic!
It's always a pleasure to attend a concert at the Odeon, Leicester Square, especially when Donald Mackenzie is playing. He really brings out the best in that organ.
Wow, finally a vid of the "Duchess"; the very majestic Odeon Leicester Square Compton. Donald MacKenzie is on fine form as usual. Thanks for posting this, great vid.
I love this organ so much. I had the privilage to be allowed to play it when I was 14 years old, thanks to the kindness of the late dear Gerald Shaw.

What a magnificent instrument and a brilliant Organist.
I would go to the Cinema more often if they had the beautiful Picture palaces and theatre Organs - still.

This the first I've heard from Donald Mackenzie...he's pretty snappy!
A real treat to finally see "the Duchess" on YouTube, those color surrounds are awsome; you just don't see them in the States.
