Back in the 70s, I loved get people to listen to this piece and then call their attention to the point where the band has retired and all the music is orchestral. Ever since I heard this the first time, I wanted great rock songs to be covered by an orchestra so that everyone learns that rock and roll is just music, not to be feared or shunned.
Alot of truth in this song. As with all Grand Funk music. I too was a teen when I first listened to GFRR. I am now 56 & todays so called music does not even come close. Luv GFRR!!!
you got that right.. Im old hippie and i will never listen to the new music I love the classic music so do my kids and my grandchildren.... the best music ever... in my day and still today.....
m8 I'd never heard this song before..ever. Fkn amazing, these boys have got the X factor that just about no bands have today. It's all too obvious. I've got 16 y/o and 13 y/o sons and the musc thy lstn to begs the belief that if you feed the people sub-standard crap, tht's the only crap they think they knw and like Shit we took all that good music for granted as we were growing up.
Hey guys, if you're young and find problems in society, do what they did in the past! Speak your mind through music and talking and spreading your words. Don't let corporations run government, and rape our forests and oceans. Don't let your friends die in a pointless war! Speak your mind. I've had enough. If you have, repost this somewhere else. be the change
I still have all their albums in fact just put a new needle on my record player, Grand Funk Railroad did not get the reconition they should have received....I am still so glad I grew up in the late 60's and 70's the were the best years that I have ever seen.....and the music was real....
@sunsetsky25 I was weened on Grand Funk! In Vietnam we played acoustic guitars with light electric strings so we could get down to jams inspired by Grand Funk and other great bands of "passion"....what a legacy of rock we experienced first hand. Kids today are looking back to find that passion...so much despare and just plain lousy creators out there now...God Save us...BRING US BACK TO OUR ROOTS! I'm 61 now and just as good as those who inspired me back then...Grand Funk Railroad always !

@obtuse100 I was 13 in 1974 and I sold pot [ mostly Joints ] up to 2 hundred a day , when I was 15 or 16 I started selling bags too and quit when I was 19...I am not a liar .....and only steers and queers are from texas.
47tooter don't know shit.In '75 you stuffed your own bag FOR $10.00 and that pot was killer. Hell, even the concert pot (what you bought at the show) was a dime for 3/4 oz. Where in the fuck was he from, because it damn sure wasn't Texas.
Asi es ,gracias GRAND FUN RAILROAD,,,llenaste nuestro tiempo, con buena musica,no era comercial por eso no gusto en su tiempo, butwas XCELLENT music, time will give da reason,
Thank God we have computers so that whenever we feel like looking up some of the really old classics like Grand Funk, we can, and listen to that great 60's and 70's sound again. This music will NEVER DIE... Just keep on tokin so that you can keep it in your mind, and it will NEVER DIE!! GRAND FUNK RULES!!
love 'em....man....I know exactly what that song is talkin about...no matter how big...popular...rich...it don't matter if you are made to leave the world and its problems behind...we need each other....goddammit!!!
@irishsetterarchie next stop...Save the Land by...Grand Funk... the only train that escaped Flint MI...just ask Michael Moore...there's a great documentary I watched yesterday on youtube...seek it out
the end is closer then we want to believe;we,re losing the blessings we once had in our nation.people wake up and seek God through his Son Jesus Christ.HE alone is the who can save us from the things to come.
"too many trying to take from my earth...if we don't stop what we all see is wrong, i guarantee you, mankind won't live long." protect our planet, speak out..."pray for your brother, let your soul find a way, help one another, oh please listen to what i say." profound words from 40 years ago, even more true today, sadly...fierce & gentle warrior for the planet..".i can't get away from loneliness".. for mother earth...peace, jillyhawk~
I must have seen GF 5-6 times growing up NYC during the 70's and they never dissapointed. They are one of the 70's bands.I still love listening to them.
I remember Grand funk when I was a young teen. great group
PLEASE go to my favs and click on SUBURBAN GUY ROCKIN OUT
he doesnt read music, really feels what he plays and improvises his songs as he goes along. the other 2 favs are him also ARIEL (awesome shredding) and ARIEL SIMANTOV (awesome sweeping) pls view comment and rate them as we think he deserves more recognition. thanks everyone!
Mark hasn't said this (anywhere i've read), but my guess is that his vocal style and manner was also influenced by Black Gospel music, a similar crying-forth, drawn-out "preachiness" found in BG
i also read that they "jammed" a lot before they recorded in the studio and composed together what they liked from these jams; the vocals and lyrics came later from listening to their own jam sessions.
i started reading the Billy James biography. Mark says his vocals were heavily influenced by soul-blues artist Howard Tate (and, in turn, songwriting by Jerry Ragovoy); it seems Mark also liked the Philly-Stax Records sound than just the homegrown Detroit-Motown sound, he was known to listen to a lot of soul music when not recording...
it's pretty amazing what GFR (with Terry Knight in the early days) came up with, it sounds original, very different than what they grew up listening to
*sigh* this is about GFR... well, anyway, about Morrison, i confirmed his run-ins with the Florida Police, even heard about some of them, but the only incidents i heard about with GFR were seizure orders from Knight's lawyers and the IRS, some bad business deals they made.
i suppose that if GFR were still around today as they were back in 1975 (Mark, Don, Mel, Craig) they would probably be framed for some bs...
Don't forget Jim Morrison of = The Doors were frame specially Jim by the Miami Police who drove him to the edge in France waiting for the Trial the result Jim Die at 27 years old.
This band is what made me want to learn guitar over 30 years ago. Mark, Don and Mel were the greatest trio, politically incorrect, harmonizing group around at that time.
My opinion is that you don't just listen to GFR, you feel it.....deep into the marrow. Anything from E Pluribus and Closer to home is great. What a wall of sound from three individuals!
@454something you got it right.... E Pluribus is pure genius! and GF are amazing rock musicians! The vietnam War I believe is the reason for a lot of awesome rock from many bands of that era- at least one good thing to come of it....
God bless GFR

@obtuse100 I was 13 in 1974 and I sold pot [ mostly Joints ] up to 2 hundred a day , when I was 15 or 16 I started selling bags too and quit when I was 19...I am not a liar .....and only steers and queers are from texas.

47tooter don't know shit.In '75 you stuffed your own bag FOR $10.00 and that pot was killer. Hell, even the concert pot (what you bought at the show) was a dime for 3/4 oz. Where in the fuck was he from, because it damn sure wasn't Texas.

Mark hasn't said this (anywhere i've read), but my guess is that his vocal style and manner was also influenced by Black Gospel music, a similar crying-forth, drawn-out "preachiness" found in BG
astronomius 2 years ago
i also read that they "jammed" a lot before they recorded in the studio and composed together what they liked from these jams; the vocals and lyrics came later from listening to their own jam sessions.
astronomius 2 years ago
i started reading the Billy James biography. Mark says his vocals were heavily influenced by soul-blues artist Howard Tate (and, in turn, songwriting by Jerry Ragovoy); it seems Mark also liked the Philly-Stax Records sound than just the homegrown Detroit-Motown sound, he was known to listen to a lot of soul music when not recording...
it's pretty amazing what GFR (with Terry Knight in the early days) came up with, it sounds original, very different than what they grew up listening to
astronomius 2 years ago
Farner was blessed with a voice. That guy could sing a beautiful song perfect, then he could turn it around and ROCK your socks off!!!!!

*sigh* this is about GFR... well, anyway, about Morrison, i confirmed his run-ins with the Florida Police, even heard about some of them, but the only incidents i heard about with GFR were seizure orders from Knight's lawyers and the IRS, some bad business deals they made.
i suppose that if GFR were still around today as they were back in 1975 (Mark, Don, Mel, Craig) they would probably be framed for some bs...
astronomius 2 years ago
Don't forget Jim Morrison of = The Doors were frame specially Jim by the Miami Police who drove him to the edge in France waiting for the Trial the result Jim Die at 27 years old.

This band is what made me want to learn guitar over 30 years ago. Mark, Don and Mel were the greatest trio, politically incorrect, harmonizing group around at that time.

My opinion is that you don't just listen to GFR, you feel it.....deep into the marrow. Anything from E Pluribus and Closer to home is great. What a wall of sound from three individuals!
454something 2 years ago 10
@454something you got it right.... E Pluribus is pure genius! and GF are amazing rock musicians! The vietnam War I believe is the reason for a lot of awesome rock from many bands of that era- at least one good thing to come of it....
