No, death metal was started originaly by bands like venom, Hellhammer, and some would say Slayer, all predate death. What death did was have metal with harsher vocals and later on, progressive elements. Chuck did not embrace terms such as father or godfather of death metal, he Just said that Death was a metal band.
Honestly early black metal an early death metal were really just extreme thrash. I Would say that its fair to call venom, hellhammer, and slayer the creators of black metal and death metal. The only thing is that bathory was the first band to purify black metal, death may have purified death metal, how ever I would say deaths albums from the 90's were more death metal than there early stuff.

It is possible, but just because the band was named Death does not necessarily mean that that is where "death metal" started. Hypothetically speaking, if a band named Punks Rawk came to the rock scene in 1978, they would not have been responsible for the genre of Punk Rock since The Sex Pistols and The Ramones actually helped mold the genre around 1975 or 1976.
Death was not the 1st death metal band. They started in 1984 and were the 1st North American Death Metal Band (on a big enough label for people to know who they are)

Chuck was probably the first musician to add a bit of talent to the world of "death" metal. I still personally hear a prog element in the guitar style but thats just me.

Being a guitar player myself, I can see the talent that he had, but he had terrible vocals. If they would have found a decent singer, they would have found huge success.

Live his vox are also kinda lacking IMO, but on CD it sounds fucking great. Plus, they did find huge succes (in the metal world that is).

I agree...I think Chuck was a very versatile death metal vocalist within the Death Metal genre...if you hear him on every consecutive album you can feel how much he progressed over time concerning his voice.

Dude, bmth sucks. don't even mention them around Death. They are nowhere near as good, or sound as good. They are fucking gay besides. Death was actually real metal, and truly heavy. bmth is just one of the typical new metal bands these days, they are awful. there are a few good metal bands out these days, but they have still been around since the late 90's or 2000. Nothing in the past few years is amazing. not even close, everything sounds too similar, nobodys original. Death was.

You're out of your element here. The man had serious talent. You obviously aren't a fan of hardcore metal or you would be able to see it.
Live shows are usually a poor display. If you could listen to a Death CD and just focus on the musical structure and complexity it would help.
Just because this style of music isn't your thing, doesn't mean theres not a shitload of human talent in it.

I wouldn't call Death "hardcore," but I know what you're saying. People who don't appreciate death metal in particular, really have no right to bash it. There are newer, better quality, shit out now, but none of it would exist without bands like Death.

well I would say that every extreme metal band that came after those bands , including death, would site those bands along with motorheard, judas preist, and black sabbath as the launching pad. I'm not even a fan of venom but i am thankful of there existence or else death, morbid angle, dying fetus ect would not exist.

No, death metal was started originaly by bands like venom, Hellhammer, and some would say Slayer, all predate death. What death did was have metal with harsher vocals and later on, progressive elements. Chuck did not embrace terms such as father or godfather of death metal, he Just said that Death was a metal band.

Honestly early black metal an early death metal were really just extreme thrash. I Would say that its fair to call venom, hellhammer, and slayer the creators of black metal and death metal. The only thing is that bathory was the first band to purify black metal, death may have purified death metal, how ever I would say deaths albums from the 90's were more death metal than there early stuff.

well i did get alot of info from his interviews. he was uncomfortable with being called father or god father of death metal, even going so far as to say that death metal and all of those sub catagories are basically bullshit. Metal is metal but to me death is more than just metal, its just good music. guys into jazz like this shit. my favorite band.

I love this song. I hadn't heard Death for about 10 yrs. picked up one of their albums (Sound Of Perseverance) and was blown away. How did I forget about these guys. Anyways, awesome.

It is possible, but just because the band was named Death does not necessarily mean that that is where "death metal" started. Hypothetically speaking, if a band named Punks Rawk came to the rock scene in 1978, they would not have been responsible for the genre of Punk Rock since The Sex Pistols and The Ramones actually helped mold the genre around 1975 or 1976.

Death was not the 1st death metal band. They started in 1984 and were the 1st North American Death Metal Band (on a big enough label for people to know who they are)
